Interesting reading the comments on Allen on PSU social media posts. Everything

from "Good Riddance" to "I'm good with that" to "his defenses gave up the big play too often" to.. "He wants to go coach for someone who can win a big game" to "he wants to coach where he will be allowed to roam the sideline and not sit in the press box". Guess those later two are shots at Franklin.

One of My favorites was "This is not a lateral move, Clemson has won titles and they are 4-1 all-time against Ohio State"

Yeah, Penn State folks seem to have mixed feelings, but at the end of the day he got them into the semi-finals and their best season is a really long time. Further, he was only there for one year, so even Penn State fans don't really have a good read on him yet.

Regarding it being a lateral move, what I'm hearing is that he and Franklin don't get along. Just different coaching styles, and since he is a former HC, that just didn't work. Sounds like a big part of that is being relegated to the box instead of roaming the sideline, as you mention. The guy wants to be with his players, which fits with Dabo well.

The draw back of having a former D1 head coach is its hard not to think they are in charge still. Could be good to challenge Dabo on some things but hopefully not conflicts.

Dabo is a good leader and treats people with respect. Make no mistake Dabo is the big dog of Tiger football. He is the leader of the pack, the lead dog that breaks trail and keeps the other dogs in line when when they ain't pulling their load. Nuff said.

Dabo is the alpha dog but not to say he does not need a Swing Dog, the one that gets the other dogs onboard.

Matt Luke seems to be working out fine as a former HC

Not necessarily a good comparison. Might know more once he talks and media digs.

Luke was burned out. He came because he wanted family time and just coaching a position.

Allen will need to be a cbv workaholic. Not saying I agree with the original post because I think Dabo could identify that right off and wouldn't hire someone that was. That doesn't mean he's got to be a yes man.

I'd compare more with Garrett. Stay a few years, gets some rings, builds their resume more and when the big job comes, take it.

Luke was a head coach too. Im sure Allen knows his role.***

played and say, “good riddance”. I think the smart fans realize they’re losing a major reason they had a great season and advanced in the playoffs.

Fine with Allen. But, if Dani could pull DC from Army… imagine what that coach could do with recruits who can actually practice more than do squad drills etc… and 4/5 stars… 🤔

I remember Oklahoma fans were glad to rid themselves of Venables. A lot of their people ate crow on that one. One common refrain from them was the D was too complicated.

there isn’t a perfect coach who makes perfect calls or has players execute flawlessly every play. You gotta look at the overall body of work.

Like you said, BV got lit up every now and then too. Nobody is above that.

In Oklahoma when he left there too. Another situation where the DC and the head coach were at odds.

Vast majority of DC's want to be on the sideline.

More OCs are in press box (but still a minority) than DCs.

I was surprised to see Allen in the box during the Penn State v ND game. I just assumed he would be on sidline.

I have no idea if it was his choice or Franklin's. But, if he wanted to be on the sideline and was told he had to be in the pressbox, I could see that being a problem. I would be very surprised if it were Franklin's orders that put Allen up there.

Sounds like it was Franklin's call after struggling with Bowling Green

"I brought it up last week about going up into the box," Franklin said. "Tom hadn't been up there in a long time as a head coach. I just think some of the things that he's done as a head coach, he doesn't need to do here anymore as a defensive coordinator, and he thought about it. Ultimately, it was his decision. He didn't want to do it last week but wanted to do it this week, and I don't know if he'll be up there next week. But it's something to consider. It's something to consider."

Penn State fan saying "good riddance" is ridiculous. The guy delivered a top 10 defense while playing the AP #1, #3, #6, #8, #12 and #21 ranked teams. Qualify that performance all you want, it is solid. And yes, he slipped a bit, statistically, over last year...Diaz averaged 247.6 ypg and Allen averaged 294.7 ypg...but before that, they were consistently much worse.

And of course we are biased and sure, we've won the championships, but they are Penn State...they fill a 106,000 seat stadium and just made it to the Semifinals. There's probably something about working for Franklin that wasn't working for Allen, and people like working for Dabo.

Anyway, just amused by the hot takes of fan bases.
