A lot depended on building codes. Things that weren't built to local/state/fed code didn't make it. Things that were usually did.

People who evacuated made it through fine. I couldn't because of my job. It was a long, long, scary night and a very, very long six months after.

Because of that experience, I find all the apocryphal language these weather chasers use to be ghoulish clickbait, because while the physical/emotional/spiritual toll was pretty steep, life did go on.

Life didn't go on for a lot of people when Katrina hit.***

know where you live, but I am certain you would be stoic and calm in a disaster. Earthquake, tornado, hurricane. You'd crawl out of the rubble, look around for your wife and kids, and fire up a Marlboro red. Life goes on.

You are correct.

I've always been calm in stressful situations, even dangerous ones. That trait was always a great help to me professionally.

But like your sanctimony, your snark is also noted.

Which storm? We have been through two major storms and it can be a terrifying experience. We were in South Florida for Andrew in 1992 and on St. Thomas for Marylin in 1995. I have often said I don’t ever want anything to scare me again like that storm in St. Thomas did. The kids were very small and I was just so worried about keeping them safe. Through the grace of God, the 4 of us were ok but we lost pretty much everything we had in our house there.

Harvey was a direct hit on my home.

I busted my knee hanging ballistic-rated plywood over the windows. Old house didn't have storm shutters. And yet our block never lost power. The rest of the community was off the grid for weeks; months in some instances.

I believe the Lord spared my home -- only wind-driven rain damage to the ceilings and an obliterated tool shed out back -- just exploded and scattered everything to the four winds.

Those storms spare one home, take another. Spare one business, take another. There's no figuring them out.

A Captain friend of mine hunkered down in his owner's Viking with his son and waited Harvey out. He was a pretty stiff salt as experienced captains usually are. When I saw him after landfall, all he said was "I won't be doing that again."

Stuff like that does change you some.

Sorry. Long post. Haven't thought about it in a while.

Flash floods, sandstorms, ice storms, hail storms, tornadoes. Texas weather is something you survive, not something you necessarily enjoy.

Men at 25 play football. Men at 40 play tennis. Men at 60 play golf. Have you noticed as men get older their balls get smaller.
