Virginia State Route 189 is a 10.82 mile state highway known as South Quay Road that runs from US 258 near Franklin northeast to US 258 Business in Suffolk.
Since I recalled my best bowl trip, I'll mention the worst. That was the Peach Bowl on New Years Eve in 1979 at the old Fulton County Stadium in Atlanta where the Falcons and Braves played.. I was a high school senior and went with my 2 bros. The weather was okay during the day, but when game started, it cooled drastically and by the second half, it must have been in the 20s with a 20 to 30 mph wind whipping through. On top of that, we lost to Baylor 24-18, with Mike Singletary as their middle linebacker. We did get to bring in the 80s in the middle of Atlanta for whatever that was worth. And 10 days later on January 9, 1980, the basketball team beat #1 Duke in a packed Littlejohn Coliseum.

TU for mentioning the Duke game. There was snow on the ground and school had been closed all week. They kicked around cancelling the game on the days leading up to it. 13,000 in Littlejohn that night is still the largest crowd ever in Littlejohn. Go Tigers!!!

189 - Fred Cone Set a Then-Clemson Record by Scoring 189 Points

Sorry this player profile is so long – but sometimes there is just a LOT of interesting information about a great player!
Fred Cone (1948-1950) – one of Clemson all time greats – took a very unusual route to get to Clemson. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:
Cone grew up in Pine Apple, Ala., with a population just over 100. He attended Moore Academy, a country school for kindergarten through 12th grade that had no football program.
"I didn't play high school football because we didn't have enough kids to field a team," he said.
While Cone was interested in attending college, World War II came first. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and joined the 11th Airborne Division, serving his country in the Philippines and Japan.
"I was real lucky because just as we were on a boat to attack Japan, we dropped the bomb on Nagasaki and so we returned to the Philippines to help guard prisoners of war," Cone said.

After serving his country, According to ClemsonTigers.com:
But, he came to Clemson without having played a down of high school football. It is perhaps the most unusual story concerning an athlete’s journey to Clemson. Cone was visiting his sister at Biloxi, MS, far from the haunts of his hometown, an obscure place called Pineapple, AL.
Unbeknown to Clemson Head Coach Frank Howard, Cone’s sister lived next door to Howard’s sister, Hazel, in Biloxi. On years when Clemson would play Tulane in New Orleans, Howard would send Hazel a pair of tickets. “One year she sent the two tickets back,” Howard remembered, “and said she’d like to have four tickets because she wanted to take the next-door neighbor to the game.”
That was in 1946, Cone’s senior year in high school. After Cone graduated, Hazel wrote him a letter. “Brother, I have you a good football player, but he’s never played football.”
Howard recalled that he had told the Clemson registrar to save him 40 beds in the barracks and that Howard would turn in that many names on September 1.
“When Hazel wrote me about Fred Cone, I had 39 names on that list. So I just wrote ‘Fred Cone’ in as the 40th name. And that’s how I got probably the best, if not the best, football player I ever had.”
https://clemsontigers.com/fred-cone/
While at Clemson:
To put it simply: Cone was spectacular. During his time at Clemson, the Tigers went 24-4-3: 1948: 11-0 1949: 4-4-2 1950: 9-0-1
ClemosnTigers.com cited Cone’s stellar play:
Of all the thrills that Howard had as a player at Alabama and as an assistant coach and head coach at Clemson, Cone is involved in the play that stood out in Howard’s mind the most, and it was against Missouri in the Gator Bowl. Clemson held a one-point lead and faced a fourth-and-three at the Mizzou 45. It was either gamble for a first down, or punt and give Missouri another chance to score. As Howard would later say, “We hadn’t stopped them all day, so I took my chance with a running play.” Cone hit a stone wall at left tackle, but kept digging and slid off a little more to the outside, found a little wiggling room, and mustered six yards and a first down at the Missouri 39. Clemson retained possession those few remaining minutes and ran out the clock. … His senior year (1950): His number of carries (184), yards gained rushing (845), and touchdowns (15) were all school season records at the time.
Overall: Also, he became Clemson’s first 2,000-yard rusher (2,183), and his career touchdowns (31) were also a school best, as were his 189 points scored.

After Clemson:
A seven-year career with the Green Bay Packers was so impressive that he was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 1974. He was also a member of the Dallas Cowboys in their first year of existence in 1960. Later he returned to Clemson as its chief football recruiter for 10 years beginning in 1961. Accolades have come Cone’s way over the years. He is a member of Clemson’s Athletic Hall of Fame and the State of South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame. He is also a member of Clemson’s Ring of Honor. After Cone completed his Clemson career, Howard was still stumped as to how his sister could predict that her neighbor’s brother would be such an outstanding football player. When asked by Howard, she simply replied, “He just looked so athletic jumping off of a diving board at the local swimming pool,” Hazel said, without skipping a beat.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article cited above:
Cone led the Packers in scoring in five of the next six seasons, including leading the NFL with 16 field goals in 1955, when the team finished 6-6 under Lisle Blackbourn in his second season. In his first two off-seasons, Cone worked for the Packers, traveling by car across Wisconsin promoting season-ticket sales. … Cone, who retired from his second career in the Clemson athletic department in 1980, was inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame in January 1974.

That is an interesting story that I've never heard. Thank you for sharing! When I saw the photo of him on the left, I thought he looked like Superman--the original TV one who we watched in reruns. It seems that Fred Cone was Superman.

He really is an interesting person. I enjoyed learning several stories about him when I looked him up.
I actually had to condense this post about him from what it could have been. I did not include all of the interesting info on him - and the post was still long. A lot of cool stuff out there about him.

When I used to see him around campus in the 70's he looked like he could still play. Knowing a bit about who he was it was amazing to see a Clemson legend in person.
