One thing all the talking heads have right is we cannot win National championships without the portal. I believe that. But if Dabo is as stubborn and hardheaded as some claim him to be, then why would he go “all in” with the portal? I predict moving forward, he’ll get 5 or fewer positions from the portal, due to the pressure from public opinion and (maybe) his AD. He’ll then be able to say “look, we tried it, and it still didn’t make us that much better.” Or “hey we took only 4 players and won 11 games.” Whichever the outcome of his dabbling in the portal, he’ll still claim he knows best and the rest of us can pound sand. Just a prediction.

The players will be a big factor if Dabo uses the portal. If we have a big exodus, he will have no choice.

That's how I see it. The further and further away we get from being an elite program. We won't be able to retain our star players as we have for the most part.

Yes, Dabo has not used the portal. But, he has not said he would not, and in fact, has said he would if needed or if we'd benefit from it. His position, as I understand it, is that he will use it if needed, but prefers to build his team through traditional recruiting, and not with a horde of portal players.
I agree 100% with that position. Also, I don't think the portal or NIL has anything to do with the mess we saw Saturday. I too think Dabo will eventually use the portal, probably sooner than later. But he will use it to fill gaps and needs, not to build the team. Just my humble opinion.

at what point do we just say DABO HAS BEEN WRONG.........we HAVE needed it in more ways than one the last several years to upgrade talent on our roster. Dabo has consistently overvalued his "home grown" talent to a point that it's tricked him and lots of fans into thinking that we're better than we really are.
I do agree that the mess Saturday was deeper than ONLY not using the portal.......that's coaching, prep, etc.....however having a keon coleman or two at WR and a Grayson McCall type at QB wouldn't have hurt at all Saturday. There are a LOT of issues plaguing the program and it ALL falls on Dabo..........Portal/NIL is a major problem that he has YET to even entertain fixing.

opinion, was not that he didn't go to the portal for a QB because he hates the portal and just isn't going to use it; it's because he truly believes Cade is the man, and there was nobody in the portal that he'd rather have. Dabo didn't see the need for it.
Now, if you are saying that Dabo was/is wrong about Cade, and there were better options in the portal, then I agree - Dabo was wrong. I have ZERO problem saying that. After a disappointing season last year, then a full off-season of growing and maturing and supposedly inproving, it's obvious to me that Cade is NOT the man, and we'll never be a playoff caliber team with him at the helm. I also think our WRs are plenty good enough; I just think they are poorly coached and are stuck in a shiddy offense overall.

Dabo has said he would use the portal if he thinks there are better players available there than he has on the team. He hasn’t used it, so he obviously doesn’t know what a good player looks like anymore. I truly believe he thinks he has an elite team in his mind and he’s convinced himself we are still playing at the same level we were in 2018.
Either that or he really never knew and it was the assistants that he surrounded himself with that led to our greatness and once they left, we are seeing the level we would have plateaued at if they didn’t come to Clemson.

Mine is that Dabo's loyalty and commitment to certain players often affects his objective judgement. Cade has flashes, and makes some nice reads and some great throws, but he has some persistent, not improving weaknesses also, which will never allow him to be a great QB. Dabo, who knows a whole lot more about football than you or me, for some reason thinks he is. I don't get it, and I think he's wrong. We'll see; I hope I'm wrong and Cade wins the Heisman while we win out. Until our offense shows some signs of life and shows some ability to consistently move the ball and score touchdowns, I'll remain unconvinced.

The PP (Portal People) seem to think that it is but that's delusional. There are now 30+ teams that are recruiting heavily from the portal. Only 12 will make the playoff.
If Dabo resorted to heavy use of the portal the same people here who are whining about not using the portal would be criticizing those he chose and dearly longing for those he didn't.
All this nonsense is from spoiled brats whose parents buy them a Porche only to then cry about the color.

You do what it takes to win. Using the portal 2 years ago for OL and WR help would have made a world of difference. That’s the difference in being above average and elite in today’s college game.
You don’t have to be a portal person to know this. Dabo needs to make the roster the best he can each year to compete with UGA/tOSU/Bama, etc. You could get away with having lower skill positions before, now you can’t. I disagree with using the portal for your entire team, but you should use it where you need a boost.
As Dabo said in 2015, you have to adapt to stay on top. The elite teams today have, he hasn’t and it’s really starting to show the separation. Sure we can go 9-3 with the roster we have, but is that good enough? I don’t think so. Dabo is a good coach, he just needs to adapt.

Can we agree that portal use is not the issue? The coots and many similar programs use it constantly but it does not seem to help. Our issue is we are missing elite talent which can’t be secured from the HS ranks or the portal without upfront NIL $. The two issues are Dabo’s unwillingness to pay upfront NIL and Clemson’s ability to raise millions on an annual basis so we can once compete with the rich schools who have a ginormous number of alumni

Clemson raises enough money to pay Dabo $11 million a year. Cut his salary a few million and use that money to bring in 3 - 4 playmakers from the portal. Would make a big difference.

In 2016, the coach made a big difference. In 2024, player ability and depth makes the difference. Look at Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss if you need a case study.

Dabo and the Tigers offered 4 OL early during the off season that turned down Clemson for other schools, then offered 2 more OL and a CB. The last 2 OL ended up being drafted by the NFL and the CB went to FSU and is a starter. 7 offers last off season and no takers.

You think Jeff Scott will fix Cade? I mean I agree we need him, but recruits don’t pan out sometimes. That’s when the portal should be used.
Recruit well and evaluate your talent. If a player doesn’t reach the level you need them to, pick up someone in the portal to help that position.
This is a football team and the goal is winning. Sometimes you have to face reality and make a change that helps you win.

Yep, just use it fill a couple gaps and add depth. Recruiting high school kids is never going to be 100%, but picking up a few kids in the portal who have proven themselves in the college game would really help when a recruit doesn’t pan out.
