How do we possibly get into the payoffs?
Oct 23, 2022, 9:39 AM
|
|
We all know that at the point in history our expectations are championships. I am really concerned that a undefeated record will not be good enough to get us in the playoffs, Due to the quality of wins, as in how we're are not able to close Teams out.....not coving the spreads...
This is my thought: One lose Alabama gets in One lose Georgia gets in One lose Ohio state gets in One lose Michigan gets in Tennessee in wings... This is a very possible sinario..... Thoughts???

PSU BEAT OhSt. That means PSU, as champ, and having beaten OhSt should have gone. Will always be controversial. Point is, it's all up to committee and how they see it. Conf champ doesn't always go...

The point was that an undefeated Conference champ has never been left out. There will be at most 4 undefeated teams this year, but probably less. Clemson should be 13-0. Winner of UGA/Tenn could be 13-0, but will have to beat Alabama. UGA could but don't think Tenn would beat them again. Winner of Michigan/OSU could be 13-0, probably will be. TCU could be 13-0 but doubtful.
Clemson wins out and they will get in. Lose a game and they will be left out.

No chance, hunh.
End of the season Big 12 tcu is undefeated Big 10. OhSt is undefeated ACC Clemson is undefeated Sec. Uga beats UT, loses to bammer in championship. You really think the committee will pick us? It's well documented that they want 2 sec teams..... I believe we should go, but

The committee doesn’t WANT 2 SEC Teams
Oct 24, 2022, 12:13 AM
|
|
Only 2 times in the 8 years of the playoff have there been 2 SEC teams. It takes outside factors for that to happen no matter how good the “2nd” best SEC team looks.
2017 SEC got 2 - 3rd and 4th seed. ND had 2 losses, Big Ten Champ had 2 losses. Pac-12 team had 2 or 3 losses that year also. Had Wisconsin won the Big over OSU and been 13-0 or had OSU been 12-1 then guess what, Bamas out and someone else’s wins the natty that year. Heck, maybe us.
2021 ACC, Big 12, and PAC 12 champs all had 2 or more losses. So your comparing a 1 loss UGA, a no loss Group of 5 , and a 1 loss ND who has no conf champ and 1 less win than UGA.
The non- SEC champ teams no matter who they are better hope there aren’t 3 other P5 Conf Champs with 0 or even 1 loss because history shows they won’t get 2 in- not the other way around. Loser of UGA -UT’s chances don’t look good right now at all with the way things are looking in the other 4 P5s. Loser of SEC champ chances looking equally as bad. B10, ACC and Big12 all look like they could have a 0 or 1 loss champ. Pac-12 will probably be a 2 loss champ but they have several still that could win with 1 loss. Oregon is the one team that would be in the most jeopardy in a head to head with UGA if that was for a 4th spot. That’s the only one where I could see a 1 loss non-champ from SEC edging a 1 loss conf champ. The head to head was just too one-sided regardless if it was first game or not. But again, a 1 loss non champ SEC needs to sill hope for chaos in 2 of the 3 other p5 conferences not just Pac-12. Right now my $ is on 1 SEC team only as the other conferences seem like they are going to put forth the 0 and 1 loss teams necessary unlike the 2 exception years. Stop buying into the media drivel that’s not how the selection committee operates. You might see a loss UT even sit toting at 3 or 4 headed to champ weekend but once the games are played and teams 4-5 have champ belts then bye-bye UT, they’ll end up 5 in the one that counts. That’s how the system works.

I think you missed the operative word there. "undefeated" Power 5 conference champion is what he said. yes Penn State was a conference champion but not undefeated.
They had 1 conference loss to Michigan. And one out of conference loss to Pitt. Then lost to USC in the Rose Bowl. Ohio State only had the one loss to Penn State in the middle of the year. Then lost to Clemson in the Playoffs in the Fiesta Bowl. Ohio State was the right decision there instead of a 2 loss Power five conference champion in Penn St.

Just remember quality of wins if factored into the decision. If Georgia loses by a couple point to anyone their in... If Alabama only has a 2ot lose their in... If Michigan loses to Ohio state by a close margin their in... If Ohio state loses to Michigan by close margin their in..... It's all about how the schedules line up ... Only chance we have is for someone to lose two games....who is that Going to be??? Alabama??? I hope..

Key word - likely. Heck, an undefeated SEC champ Auburn got left out of the BCS championship.
Also, the P5 is, and maybe already has, morphed into P2. Despite Clemson playing in the best division in CFB, all you ever hear is “the weak ACC.”

Two SEC teams and winner of Ohio St-Mich goes. Clemson goes if undefeated. Probably as #4 but possibly as #3. Wake is top 10. That sums it up.

TCU just won its 4th in a row vs. top 25
Tennessee beat Pitt and UF when they were ranked. Plus Bama.
There may be others, but those I know off the top of my head. And there will certainly be others before the year is up with upcoming schedules. I don't think we will be hurt by our schedule, but I don't think it will be a big help either. Plus, Syracuse still has to play Wake. Wake and NCSU still have to play. NCSU still has to play UNC. So, loses will be coming for those 3 that may knock them out of the top 25.

TCU has 2 wins vs CURRENT AP top 25 teams.
Clemson has 3.

Their (TN) signature win is obviously against Alabama. Everyone knows now that Fla and Pitt were overrated in the preseason polls.
But Syracuse, Wake Forest and NC State are still in the top 25. With Wake at #10 just 4 spots behind Bama. In my opinion Alabama is having a slightly down year and are beatable. Teams are on to them thanks to copying Clemson's approach in beating Bama twice and losing in a nail biter once.
In addition several teams have copied Clemson's playing style from 2014 to 2020. It's easier said than done but a few teams look like Xerox copies of Clemson from those years.

I could see…

A 1 loss Bama and UGA getting in if UGA’s 1 loss is to Bama in the SEC championship. I don’t see both a 1 loss OSU and 1 loss Michigan getting in. Since the are in the same division one of them will be playing for the conference title and one won’t.
I could see this:
1 loss UGA 1 loss Bama 1 loss Ohio or Michigan Undefeated TCU or 1 loss Ok St
I could see Clemson being on the outside looking in especially if Syracuse, NC State and Wake fall off here at the end.
It’s all about how the committee perceives Clemson. Right now the AP says we have 3 quality wins. But that and $6 gets you a gallon of gas.
Just gonna have to take care of what we can and wait it out.

Playoff committee guidelines specifically mention that conference championships matter.
P5 conference champions with 13 wins have been placed in the CFP 100% of the time.
P5 conference champions with 12 plus wins have been placed in the CFP 95% of the time. (12-1 Ohio St was left out in favor of 12-0 Notre Dame).

Being 8-0 and leading a division in a Power Five keeps a team in playoff contention. Considering other ranked teams in the CFP do not have a better record yet, Clemson should be realistically/actually first.
In virtual/opinionated rankings (ESPN): 1. Georgia 2. Ohio State 3. Tennessee 4. Michigan 5. Clemson 6. Alabama 7. TCU (up 1) 8. Oregon (up 2) ?. Ole Miss (down at least 2) ?. UCLA (down at least 2)

Clemson's resume is as good as anybody's right now, better than most.
Undefeated we are a lock, but even with one loss I think we could get in.
Depends on how the committee views teams like Wake Forest, NC State, FSU, and Syracuse and how they finish.
If UNC can win out the ACC title game would probably be a play in game.

Biggone,
I think it depends on the quality of the loses. Alabama's loss is on the last play to a top 5 team, so they are still in the mix. But one or two of the teams ahead of us right now are going to lose by 10+ points somewhere along the line and get themselves eliminated.
All we can control is to win out. If we do that, the members of the committee will be looking for reasons to eliminate one-loss teams (& take the pressure off of themselves).
If we lose one, we are done.
