My understanding is Kiffen doesn't like the portal, but is using it because transfers have played college FB and the ones he recruits have proven they can play whereas a high school kid has not.

It's what happens when the clear-thinking adults are ignored, ridiculed, and shouted down in media/social media. Guard-rails were needed, but none were provided.
We're at a point in our country where anytime someone tries to provide a bit of caution they're ignored, or ridiculed by stupid people. Stupid people lack band-width, and foresight. They ignored the warnings of smart people like Dabo, Saban, etc...and now we have a mess. Predictable.

EXCEPT they have more free time, because they are stupid and don't do much else, and say the same thing over and over until other stupid people believe it to be true.
And stupid stuff gets more clicks, follows, leverage.

but the supreme court didnt set any rules and washed their hands of it.
No1 has the ballz to try to establish some rules for fear of the lawyers.. which caused this whole thing in the 1st place.
schools have control over the scholarships but that is it. They have no way to regulate the NIL money. If the schools come up with a standardized plan they will get sued for anti-trust or some other labor clause.

It's not weird. I have the Social Security system, but you bet your butt that when the time comes I will use it unless they have replaced it with something better. Just because he hates it does not mean he can't use it.

than Dabo about how f’d up all this transfer portal and other aspects of the new college landscape are. The difference is in his job at Ole Miss that he has to use the current rules to better his team while wishing there were better rules.

He's talking specifically about the timing of the portal opening before the postseason has ended, not the transfer portal in general. It seems like most of y'all didn't even read the tweet, much less the article. Anyway, the schedule definitely needs some work. Most players who want to transfer don't have the luxury of waiting until the bowls have been played to enter the portal, and the players who already have a deal in place with another team don't have much incentive to stick around and play in their current team's bowl game.

There’s a reason why he and Dabo get along.
He’s not lying when he says he is not a fan of the current system. However, he is willing to play the game to win. And he plays it quite well.
Lane would prefer actually just to straight up recruit because he thinks his system will lure the kind of playmakers he needs. He is, however, handicapped being at Ole Miss. Yet, he overcomes this using what’s available to him. Why play the game with one hand tied behind your back when you don’t have to? Adopt, improvise, overcome.
Two opposite things can be true at the same time….
Lane will not be at OM much longer….

Most coaches aren't going to be fans of anything that makes their job harder, but they're getting paid a lot of money to deal with it. Plenty of jobs at lower-level schools if they don't want to deal with NIL and transfers.

Agreed.
The main point is, he can out recruit most people. You put him at an elite school, and no one is going to out recruit him.
Sure, the portal makes it harder for everybody…. but he deals with it, and will continue to deal with it as the cards have been dealt….
Lane much like Baker Mayfield, has quietly come into his own…

He's had opportunities at elite schools like USC and Tennessee, and I'm sure he's thought hard about openings like A&M. But unless Alabama comes knocking, I don't know who would lure him away at this point. For instance, Clemson sounds like a great program but remember back when Dabo was hired, it was middle of the pack ACC school. Ole Miss is a serious contender for CFP next year and was a win away from making it this year. He's more likely to leave only if he falls on his face like Jimbo

The key thing here is "free agency starts while the season is still going".
Others have stated, and I agree, that Lane isn't hating the whole system. There are benefits in the portal if you use it (and conversely, if you don't use it, all you see are the drawbacks).
It bothers me big time to see kids quit during the season and announce for the portal when there are still regular season games left. The guy from NCSU, for one, comes to mind. You can't transfer until the end of the season. It's not like you announce yourself as a free agent and will suit up for someone else the following week.

Here's a noble idea. It seems all the coaches say the same thing, they don't like the partal system ,it's killing college football, it's hard to manage the roster, etc etc, well why not get together and vow to stop offering and accepting portal players period. If they kave no home to go to maybe they will stop entering the portal. Just a thought.

For those worried about taking jabs at Lane, stop and listen to what he's saying. I'm sure he loves the ability to get all this talent but the system is horrible. even he will eventually be handicapped when his boosters run out of money. The NCAA needs to establish some rules. What the timelines should be. Should there be spending caps? Should a player be able to have multiple transfers? How often? etc...
