Garrett Riley

5

Oct 22, 2023, 9:43 PM

Their 2022-2023 roster the year they played in the NCG had many 3 star players, had a 4 star player here and there Zero 5 stars. Clemson had more 4 star players and 5 star players than TCU did not to mention 13 players from the TP. Garrett Riley can’t say we don’t have the players for his system, look how successful he was at TCU with less talented players than Clemson. Where is the speed, uptempo and fast offense we were told about during the off-season? Maybe he isn’t the right fit here the talent is there all over the field he’s got no energy or enthusiasm you can’t win if you can’t score!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Completely agree. Isn't Chad Morris on campus at this time?

Maybe the parties realize the fit isn't there and Reilly goes his separate way at season's end. Morris could then be offered the job.

You nailed it. Where is the up tempo, etc.

Oh No...PLEASE not that again! They were ready to run that dude out of town when he left the first time because he found a wholesaler in Texas who could save him megabucks on Caffeine drinks & Bubble gum.

Actually, Morris' offenses are what you have seen at Clemson for the past few years. The world caught up, defenses adjusted, Dabo didn't.

The difference is player development

6

Oct 22, 2023, 10:09 PM

Sure they may not have been as talented but that staff developed them and brought them to their full potential. Name one player that Riley inherited that has improved since they have been at Clemson? Our Oline sucks, our running backs are average at best, and the receivers can’t run routes, catch or block. They may have been 4 and 5 stars coming out of high school, but Dabo and staff have developed them into 1 and 2 stars now. Dabo didn’t just need to hire Riley, he needed to hire the whole TCU offensive staff.

I mean what do you expect? Dabo is letting a bunch of scrubs as position coaches. Listen, CJ is a Clemson great, but his first coaching job shouldn’t have been at this level. Austin may be the worst O-line coach in the P5, and Gresham should be selling insurance somewhere. The coaching staff is laughable. Conn, Richardson, Austin, Gresham, and Spiller should all be in the unemployment line this off season. I believe Goodwin can be great one day, but Dabo needs to bring in an ESTABLISHED coach to pair with him.

I like the idea of bringing in a co-defensive coordinator. Wes can go to the booth and thrive as a strategist.

We already have a co-defensive coordinator, Mickey Conn***

Any time we run up tempo, it’s a run up the middle. Makes it pretty easy to defend when they know what’s coming.

They had more experienced skill players and a better OL and were very familiar with his offense.

Not sure how Riley went from running one of the most exciting offenses in America to this mess in less than a year.

What kind of pattern or route tree these 4 and 5 star players can't run and execute?? Its an ongoing surprising problem but why can't they block down field or within 6 yards of the line of scrimmage???

They had all spring and summer to get that thing juiced up and vicious....but except for about 5 or 7 of them....we looking like a bunch of lost tigers with no bite waiting to get poached.

Re: Garrett Riley

3

Oct 22, 2023, 10:21 PM

I think it’s more about development… that tcu line was way better than anything we witness on the OL… an older qb that developed and knew the system .. they had a rb better than both ours combined (miller) and a first round wr talent with one guy , which we do not have. They had more talent that was developed. Stars are cool and all but if you don’t develop the guys and translate that to the d1 level it’s meaningless… some coaches staffs do it well and others don’t.

Re: Garrett Riley

2

Oct 23, 2023, 7:47 AM

Of course, if the players had not developed FUMBLE-ITIS, we wouldn’t be having this discussion. Look how many drives got to the red zone without any points scored. Those fumbles were momentum and game changing killers. In Miami, it should never have come down to OT at all.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Lack of talent (or speed or size etc) is not the problem. Period.

3

Oct 22, 2023, 10:30 PM

We have a legitimate top 10-15 defense. We have a better defense, and better talent on defense, than anybody we have played so far. Yet, other teams with less talented offensive players, always find ways to move the ball just enough, and score just enough against our superior talent on defense.

On offense, we don't have a Trevor or DeShawn or Etienne or Watkins or Higgins etc.; but we are STILL more talented on offense, at QB and RB and yes, WR than most teams we play. And by more talented, I mean faster, more explosive, and stronger. STILL. Yet our superior offensive talent can't do against inferior defensive talent what our opponents with inferior offensive talent routinely do against our superior defensive talent.

There is no question - ZERO - in my mind of our superior talent, even though it's not as superior as it has been, it's still superior to almost everybody we have played so far with the possible exception of FSU. Yet somehow, other teams get far more out of the talent they have than we do. We do less with more, than just about anybody, and whatever that is, is what is missing over the last couple of years.

The problem is not Riley. The problem is all the reject position coaches Dabo gave him to work with.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Garrett Riley

Oct 22, 2023, 10:52 PM

Ok…if we go with the theory it’s the position coaches…how were we a top 15 offense this time last year, top 5 in the red zone and ranked 5th overall. We only lost 2 guys offensively so can’t blame it on that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Garrett Riley

Oct 23, 2023, 6:40 AM

You're telling me that Clemson was a top 5 offense overall last year? Not believing that for a minute. Do you have a link to the rankings?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Garrett Riley

Oct 23, 2023, 7:18 AM

14th in scoring offense, 36th in total offense, 5th in RZ Scoring Percentage, and 59th in yards per play this time last season. That was through 8 games: GT, Furman, La Tech, Wake, NCSU, BC, FSU, Syracuse.

Finished that season: 24th in scoring, 41st in total offense, 6th in RZ scoring and 61st in yards per play.

I don’t agree we was a top 5 offense by no means. But there is some truth to how did we go from being one of the best red zone offenses to being really bad and same for scoring offense because right now we’re ranked 77th in scoring offense and 130th in RZ Scoring Percentage. We rank 4th this season in red zone attempts.

I am really starting to think those that say our offensive players typically regress during their time at Clemson are right - especially over the last 5 years or so. Not sure what changed or who on the staff left 5 or 6 years agao but it sort of seems accurate. Outside of a few 2nd or 3rd tier WR's it seems like very few offensive players have had their BEST years as a Jr. or Sr.

You're so focused on this recruiting rankings. Look at our players right now. Where is this talent "all over the field?" We have 0 speed. You can't run a fast, up-tempo offense when your players aren't fast, do not play smart, and haven't been developed.

Riley will be given the choice of assistants after the season is over. Dabo knows what he has to do.

His stock has more than likely cooled because of this season’s output. Unless he leaves of his own accord, I don’t think we have to worry any longer about him being a “one and done”.
BTW: I still think he was a great hire and that he can do great things at Clemson.

Re: Garrett Riley

Look a Venables' hiccup last year at OU. Now he has his team undefeated (albeit UCF was close) and all the Sooner fans screaming for his head last year are saying what a great hire he is. Hopefully Dabo can put his loyalty and legacy desires aside and go out and find a slew of established coaches to right this ship. It is listing badly right now.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Garrett Riley

Oct 26, 2023, 11:43 AM

Riley had better players at TCU.

Quentin Johnson was a 1st round pick at WR
Steve Avila was a 2nd round pick at OL
Kendre Miller was a 3rd round pick at RB
Derius Davis was a 4th round pick at WR
Max Duggan was a 7th round pick at QB
Taye Barber was an UDFA at WR
Emari Demarcado was an UDFA at RB
Alan Ali was an UDFA at OL

Clemson doesn't have that level of talent, especially at the skill positions. We don't have a 5th year senior at QB either. We have a young, inconsistent QB surrounded by average talent. That's why the offense is a mess.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

the most part. Cade, most of the time, has not been afforded that basic necessity. When he HAS been, the passing game has picked up.

Yep just look at the PFF ratings from last week. Cade was under 40 when under duress (which was something like 80% of the time) and rated 87 with a clean pocket. The OL is killing us. (Along with the fumbles but if runners had holes to run thru, the fumbles would go down as well)

Re: His QB at TCU had time to survey the field and get his passes off, for

Oct 27, 2023, 12:16 AM

lol. fumbles have nothing to do with the OL unless the defender impacts the QB-RB exchange. The person with the ball needs to hold onto the ball. period.

Re: Garrett Riley

1

I don't believe in the ratings anymore. Our star rating increased because if Clemson got a player after the success they thought he was better because of that.
