Lack of production by backups

Has anyone else noticed the past few years that when the backups come in during a blowout, the offense just stalls out and does nothing most of the time? Watching other teams, it seems they still gain yards and put points up on the board but Clemson just lacks that production. The play calling does seem stale in garbage time, but the backups cant run the ball and get first downs?

Well there is a reason they’re 2nd string or more. They’re still talented but they also don’t get as much playing time which I’m sure factors in.
I will say, I know it was his first game but I was expecting more out of DJ. I predict he’ll be another great one for us but thought he would have showed more last week.

Might have been who the backup QBs had in on the line but especially the receivers.

As a unit they do tend to struggle but they are getting key reps so if they are ever needed to be inserted with the starters there isn't a significant impact on performance. Luckily we shouldn't ever need the entire second unit to play at once, but if it were to ever happen it would definitely be this season.

Yes, I've noticed that, but it seems like it's only when the whole unit is in.
I don't notice a drop-off when individual #2s mix in with the starters. So maybe it's because the QB intensity drops off. Even Trevor didn't want to get too intense with "Kelly's team", but he had the game skills to produce points anyway.
I think our vanilla play-calling has a lot to do with it, and the defense (even Wake's) getting aggressive in certain situations. Remember that there's two primary ways for a top offense to beat you: the threat of the big play, and successful execution on third downs. I really think the dropoff from #1s to #2s is not about the big play threat; it's the successful execution on third down. The #2s will get better.
BTW, when you refer to other teams I assume you're referring to those SEC schools whose OLs are like road graders, allowing backup RBs to run through huge wholes. Those guys cannot stay healthy playing that style. (So you run up the score but lose 3 OL to injury against a weak opponent. What did you gain?)

Most of our Oline were backups last year. They did very nicely against Wake last week. Just saying.

I swear some of us would complain of paying taxes after winning the power ball.

It is a real problem when our 2's don't run it up on a bunch of Sr's
I guess if 2's did run it up we would complain the 3's just can't get it done.
This has to be troll......

Yes the chickens have a second team...... Coot reserves are the equivalent of Newberry College or Woodmont HS.
