Kyle Stanley makes it into Open

Jun 10, 2013, 9:17 AM

Stanley just slipped in by holding on to #60 in the world rankings. If Stallings had won yesterday, I think he would have passed Kyle. There was also a guy on the European Tour who just fell short.

I thought it interesting that he didnt play last week with it being that close

Yeah, I wondered if there was any strategy involved there

or if he was just sticking to his schedule.

Maybe after playing 36 holes earlier in the week (to try to qualify), he decided he wasn't ready to play this weekend. Tired, no practice rounds, etc...

He had played several weeks in a row and said that he was tired.

Well done Kyle! This years US Open setup

fits his game pretty well too. I can't remember the last US Open to be played on a course less than 7,600 yds, munch less under 7,000. Kyle works the ball well both ways so a shorter setup should suit his game. I believe we'll see a lower total in this years open, and the shorter course allows more of the field (straight hitters as well as players who can shape the ball) and not just the bombers a shot at winning. Should be a great Championship.

Guess it's a relative term...

If you have the game to play on tour you can bomb it. Kyle is no a short knocker for sure (around 35th-40th in driving distance), but he doesn't usually seem to try to,"overpower" courses with his distance like Bubba, D. Johnson, Phil, etc. I think a shorter course just gives more players the opportunity to win.
