Says the other coach "touched him", and he didn't think that was right. So that's why he punched him. No apology, no regret. This is what you get from a person who has been told he's a victim all of his life, and is unable to accept any responsibility for any bad behavior on his part.

a statement apologizing and saying that kind of behavior is unacceptable, the president of the university has issued a statement condemning the behavior, but Howard remains oblivious and defiant, certain that if he feels disrespected, he has the right to start swinging on people.

but it was one of those swings where he wanted to punch the guy then his brain had to send the signals to his arm not to throw the punch because that's just stupid for a coach to do, so he gave what I would call a violent cheek stroke with a forceful hair tussle.

He sees nothing whatsoever wrong with that in any way and he's not about to offer any kind of apoplogy or admit any kind of wrongdoing. He even has idiots defending him in that. That's the whole problem here - there seems to be a whole segment of society that needs to be told that it's wrong to hit people because they touch you. If you can't understand that, you are an ignorant dumbazz and have no place in a civil society, so shut the fack up. Juwan needs to be sat down in a room and forced to repeat that 500 times to an authority figure.

More like one guy with a BS sense of "pride". he's not in the moment any more, he's had time to settle down and think about it, and he's still defending it. Will Howard be fired? If so, why? If not, why not? If not, he should at least be suspended for the rest of the season immediately in my opinion.
Woody Hayes didn't fare so well when he lost control.
If the roles were reversed, I suspect the Wisconsin assistant coach who Howard threw a punch at would already be canned.

If a professional peer who I knew touched, or even grabbed my arm in an attempt to talk to me in an expected, customary manner (post game handshake), I would hear what he had to say, then tell him what I thought, and walk away. If he took a swing at me, THEN I might swing back, but to be mad because my team got beat (which is essentially what this was all about) then swing on the other coach when he wanted to talk as I snubbed him like a child, then no. The other coach is totally blameless here - Howard is 100% at fault.

But your OP tries to place all the blame on him because, according to you, he's been told he's a victim all his life.
Howard was trying to walk off the court. The other coach accosted him, grabbed him, and tried to stop him from leaving. He told the coach to get his hands off him. Others rushed in and escalated the situation.
Your OP is silly if you don't also put blame on the Wisconsin coach.
And no, you wouldn't react the way you claim if someone put their hands on you like the Wisconsin guy did. Maybe you wouldn't have swung, but you wouldn't have been calm about it either.
