I didn't realize that I'm more in shape than I thought I was

So to recap, I plateaued in my weight loss journey. In about 4 months I went from 274 down to hovering between 245 and 250. Now granted that's 250 lbs of sparkling romance and sex machine. But I haven't moved from that weight in a while. So I started jogging this week.

Now I hate running. Despise it. And it all stems from high school baseball. I had a baseball coach who didn't really know how to coach so he just ran us the whole time. We literally ran more than the track team. It was at least 4-5 miles per practice 6 days a week. And me being a naturally stocky/strong guy, both in stature and girth made running that much more of a pain. So I've tried to avoid it my whole life. Also, I had much more success weight lifting because having short arms and short legs makes lifting a lot of weight easy.

First day I thought for sure I was going to die. Unexpectedly, I walked 3 laps and jogged the last lap easily. Barely sweated (and I normally sweat a lot) and not really out of breath.

shockface.gif

Well, because I'm stronger than your average male, I decided I would up it yesterday. I walked a lap, jogged a lap, walked a lap, jogged a lap. This was the sweet spot. It shocked me that 1: after the first jog, I wasn't that out of breath, and 2: by the time I got around to the next jog lap, I was pretty much recovered. Now that second and last jog lap went a little slower, but it wasn't bad. By the time I got up to the weight room to do my daily 25 push ups and 25 body weight squats I was sweating but not that bad.

So anyways: TL;DR: FBC is in better shape than he thought (which I thought was no shape at all) and today I'm purchasing running gear, new shoes, and a smart watch because I'm now a runner. At least for another 2 weeks until it gets hot and I quit.

Look for me running through Aiken with tdrake® like

By laps, you mean the track at school, or 400 meters

So you walked 400 meters, "ran" 400 meters, walked 400 meters, and "ran" 400 more meters.

So because you were able to run a total of 800 meters or 2600 ft or 1/2 a mile while taking a break in between you realized you were in better shape than you thought you were.

WOW. You must have thought you were borderline wheelchair bound.

Keep doing it though. I've been running now for the last 8 weeks. One thing is for sure. It still sucks.

Yesterday I ran 2.5 miles at lunch, then I played bball at church with the youngins. I is achy.

a lot people who participated in the main athletic teams during their high school career don't like running now because running was used as punishment for years.

It makes sense.

I avoid running. I would rather go on a 6 mile brisk walk at noon at 90 degrees than run 1.5 miles at 7 am and 68 degrees. I was a distance runner for most of my life and hate it now. It's not the lungs though for me. It's the bones and joints. Some say running isn't so great for us overall, but I think it may just be the individual. For me, I will pass. Bikes, walking or hiking, surfing, swimming are all good. Anything but running.

Are/were you doing things in your 'fatburn' range?

I won't get into the (limited I'm knowledgeable about) science of it, but I used to run a lot, unlike you i ENJOY it, just got out of the habit and dealt with out of shape fat people injuries and things of that ilk for years...

anyhoo....i started back in the gym last fall, and have been taking WALKS (brisk walks, but walks nonetheless) around the hood over lunch when i can....hour long, about 4 miles. Keeping my heart rate about only between 115ish and mid-130's....supposably, this is best for burning fat, instead of your body using the good stuffs as fuel once you get into the cardio range

but you're the substitute assistant gym teacher, so I'm sure you're aware.

anyhoo....I'm down 30 something pounds, myself...it WAS like 35-40lbs, but I snack-attacked-mockerfuther'ed like a....well....mockerfuther a couple weeks back and you know how that goes.

also....whoever said you gain an inch of dink for each 10lbs you lose was onto something. It's not REALLY an inch per 10....but, you should see this thing....it's m a j e s t i c

Exercise is great, but don’t make the mistake of thinking you can exercise your way to weight loss. No amount of exercise can make up for bad eating habits.

I won't.

I'm down 55-ish pounds and staying at a lower weight than I was in high school when I played all the soccer.

I remember my first times at Orange Theory and how I could barely walk and keep up. It took a long time, but now I'm consistently in the top 3 of my age group in varying challenges.

Gotta start somewhere and I'm happy for you to at least be starting.

Rome wasn't built in a day and neither is your Fabio-esque physique. Keep on keeping on and do yourself proud.

Wait til you shed enough weight that you don't snore and actually get good sleep.

Whatever you do, take care of your shoes! Seriously, go to a real running store and get fitted for some shoes.

Yeah, in my younger years and into my forties I ran, biked a lot, bassetbawled, backpacked, etc. Pretty much refined my activities in old age (I'm older than Beng!) to fishing, hunting a little, camping, and walking, in addition to all the maintenance on my properties. Just got back from fishing and camping on the coast the last several days and I need a day or two to recover and clean the boat and stuff. Last week I spent up on the Davidson River trout fishing an camping with my son. That was nice having him around to do the heavy lifting. Let me tell you! Fishing hard and camping is work! Glad I'm still in the game.
