Joseph Ngata

If I stays for another year I really hope he'll have a Cornell Powell type breakout in his final season.

I think he's got the potential. And a good year could make him some money in the next draft.

I agree. We saw flashes of what Ngata could do with CK at QB. I think of all the guys, he could benefit the most by returning.

His ceiling is a lot higher than Cornell's

He should be a 1,000 yard, 10 TD type player the way the coaches rave about him

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He can definitely be a great one if he stays healthy and focused.

I was encouraged by his performance in our bowl game.

Me too. He's got the tools.

This is what's frustrating about WR. They just don't seem to develop; they just show flashes of what they could be.

So Grisham hasn't shown a great recruiting ability (though he did sign Lucas and Williams) and doesn't seem to develop his players. What he can do is smack the heck out of some gum during interviews.

I apologize about the last part but darn that sh*t drives me crazy.

Grisham became the WR coach in Feb of 2020.

His first recruits were Dacari Collins, Beaux Collins, Will Taylor and Troy Stellato. That was his first class after Jeff Scott left. One transferred and the other three have had major injuries.

Since then he has recruited Antonio Williams, Adam Randall, Cole Turner, Noble Johnson, Ronan Hanafin, Tyler Brown and Misun Kelley.

During his first year as WR coach Amari Rodgers and Cornell Powell had breakout years and in his last two, DJ was our QB.

Ding ding ding. I think this all centers around dj being a very bad qb. Our WR's also looked bad when cole stoudt was throwing them the ball. All of a sudden deshaun comes in, and we look dynamic.

Ngata is a great talent. He's been unlucky w/ injuries and he's had Dj Throwing the ball to him. It would be wise for him to play another year of college football.

Hmmm....

Jan 9, 2023, 10:42 AM [ in reply to Grisham became the WR coach in Feb of 2020. ]

So his whole first recruiting class didn't pan out (Beaux Collins is average, if we are honest). But had Ngata gotten any better? Are WRs dropping more passes than ever, or is it just me?

NONE of the current haul of WRs are ranked in the Rivals 100. Johnson is #9 athlete. How can you defend this recruiting?

Still mum on the gum-smacking, oh well, TU anyway.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Who are the top 100 WR we've recruited?

Jan 9, 2023, 10:53 AM

Sammy for sure. Ladson? Bust. Ray Ray and Cain were, but neither were real stars here. Nuk wasn't. Mike Williams wasn't? Ross maybe. Don't think Artavis Scott was. Renfrow wasn't for sure. Tee and Amari were and both were excellent.

WR is an area where recruiting I think slipped. But just because a guy is top 100, or not, hasn't been the key factor here. I like our WR recruiting the last two years as we've gone back to getting the smaller, quicker guys instead of just the jump ball guys. But the jump ball guy focus began under Scott

Re: Who are the top 100 WR we've recruited?

Jan 9, 2023, 12:20 PM

I think they got enamored with Ross/Higgins and the playoffs and NC game in 2018 and that seemed to change our thinking for a while. Like you, I'm glad to see us starting to balance that out some.

His 1st is the sophomore class and all were injured

Jan 9, 2023, 10:57 AM [ in reply to Hmmm.... ]

for most or all of the season, a season with DJ at QB. I don't see how anyone can draw any conclusions from that. Why no credit for Amari and Cornell and their senior year improvement under his tutelage?

We'll know so much more next year.

If either Joe Ngata or Beaux Collins played elsewhere and

they were currently in the portal, TNet portal addicts would be screaming at Dabo to go out and grab those two really talented WRs to help our WR depth.

Don’t lie. You know it’s true!

Jan 9, 2023, 10:03 AM

If he stays I truly hope he invests in some stickum, or a few pairs of those super tacky gloves. Either way I'll cheer for him, but I'll be holding my breath on every pass thrown his direction to be honest. He can be very dangerous when he makes a catch though, that's for sure.

Re: Joseph Ngata

Jan 9, 2023, 10:07 AM

Do the rules permit him to return after playing in the all star game? I guess so, since there are no rules anymore. Would love to have him back. He really came to life those last 2 games. Was a different player.

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think Powell is a good comparison

Jan 9, 2023, 10:09 AM

I also think Ngata needs to return. I just can't see him drafted this year, but I ain't a scout

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I think Powell is a good comparison

Jan 9, 2023, 10:43 AM

Return or transfer. He would perform well at pro day, but he just hasn't performed yet. With Cade at qb, and him healthy, I could see him being a 1000 yard receiver.

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ngata doesn't have top end speed

Jan 9, 2023, 10:45 AM

he's also not been very good at competing for 50/50 balls. I'm not sure how good his measurables would be

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Had 1/3 of his catches & 1/5 of his yards in 2 games with CK

as the primary QB.

Another DJU casualty

1

Jan 9, 2023, 10:44 AM

Dude couldn’t catch a single pass DJU threw. With Cade, he’s playing like we always expected him to. He would benefit tremendously from a return next season.

Can’t fault any of our receivers for not catching flightless ducks.

Re: Joseph Ngata

Jan 9, 2023, 11:23 AM

Looked like a totally different player the last couple of games. One would think a full season of they kind of production would make his draft likelihood skyrocket. Not sure he's anything other than an UFA at this point.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think he's got HUGE upside.... needs some coaching up....

Jan 9, 2023, 12:44 PM

.... would love to see this guy come back adn have that break-through year.
