The best sign I ever saw at Johnstone Hall was “Jim Carlen Wears Leisure Suits.” We had guests with us who were UofSC fans and the woman said, “I don’t get it. What does that mean?” Her husband replied, “They think he’s a turkey. No respect.” LOL

I lived in Johnstone Hall 3 years -first on E2 as a Freshman then B5 where we had a student organization we named "The B5 Shrubberies" from the Monty Python - Holy Grail movie (a classic on the hall in the early days of VHS 1985-89). We competed in some intramural sports and made a homecoming float one year, but mostly just did it for the preferred student football seating.
My recollections of Johnstone: Playing hall soccer on Friday/Saturday nights (our RA was usually missing on the weekends)
Lovely common restrooms with no stall doors and room for 6 in the shower
Stairwells reeking of recycled Milwaukee's Best.
No matter your first class time, everyone on the hall was awakened by the first closing door of the morning.
A short walk to Memorial Stadium...a long walk back (up hill)
Dorm room the size of my dining room
Kitchen area access to underground Clemson.
A Brotherhood to rival any fraternity
As much as it was a laughing stock of the on-campus housing, I relished the days I spent there with great people in a great atmosphere. Thanks for the photos!

I lived on B5 in 87-88. Interesting place for sure. I have been searching for my B5 Roach Motel shirt...may be lost to time.
Most of the details and names from my time there have faded in my memory, but it was a good time.

Lived on E-6 my first year at Clemson. We had a weekly roach contest where we would pin the biggest roaches on the board in the hall. There were some bigguns. Had fun but wouldnt want to do it again.

Pic looks like it was from then (the early 70's Hootie Error) with that guy at the helm we never beat anyone very badly. And beat very few at all. All he ever did for Clemson was destroy the Hill run.

I moved into E-327 in August 1968. I roomed with a high school friend and knew several other freshman who also moved into E. That meant I had a ready made group of friends with whom to share plenty of good times, and the misery that was Johnstone Hall. But Johnstone struck me then and now as miserable.
Looking back on that year from today I recall quite a few things about the dorm that made it what it was:
Section E had no A/C. In my first two weeks in the dorm, temperatures in Clemson topped 100F at least five times. It was miserable for 6 or 8 weeks until temperatures dropped.
The common showers were no big deal and seemed more or less like any locker room I'd ever been in. On the other hand, the toilets with no doors were awful. It's seemed odd then and now how many guys like to poop and have a conversation with the fellow somewhere in the line who was also pooping. Sit down, light up a cigarette and chat awhile. Not my style.
I am a sound sleeper today and was then. The noise from other rooms and the hall never bothered me. I knew guys who just hated other people who made a racket.
Half the people on my hall smoked. I did too, but thinking back to that time the smoking seems crazy. It was 1968; I was unaware of pot being on campus, much less on my hall. That changed pretty dramatically in my time at Clemson.
The Post Office, Harcombe and the canteen were very close. Classrooms were very close. Parking was not an issue the first semester since freshmen were not allowed to have cars. Second semester I brought my wreck of car to school and paid I think $10/month to park in at a service station downtown.
The only phone on our hall was about 40 yards from our room. There was a line of guys waiting to make a call there about every night and I had a girlfriend back in Charleston. My Dad was a career Army guy and he did not expect phone calls from me EVER, but my Mom always pouted when I didn't call home. I think I called her once a month or so for a semester. That suited me. Thanks be for the cell phone world we live in now.
Lots of guys recall Johnstone as agreeable. I didn't then and don't now. After one year I took pot luck rather than trying to find and air conditioned and more comfortable dorm for two guys. I moved to the box dorms and never looked back and my pot luck roommate was best man at my wedding and got me a good job when I graduated well after he did.
Have you ever seen a less attractive dorm on any campus than Johnstone? It was big. But it was ugly.
Nice picture though. Johnstone was a big part of the Clemson I attended. Nearly all the CLmeson guys I know today have Johnstone in their background.

in Johnstone that each room had a phone. Everyone had a long distance code tied to their name that they used to call home. I seem to remember a few guys that would call crazy places with made-up codes. Sorority houses at UCLA, just random crazy stuff. Can't remember if they ever got busted for that or not. Good times! E3 for me as well!

I lived in Johnstone from 1987-1991. B-704 as a Fr. and B-701 as a So. D-2 as a Jr and F my last year after a brief stay in Norris Hall. B-7 was the best in my opinion and if I had it to do all over again I would.

Remember them fondly. Freshman year spent in D, sophomore in E, junior in B and moved off campus to a little white 3 room house in downtown Clemson- Of course that 7:45am morning walk woke you up 3 days a week for the first class.

D-3 the entire time. Lots of D-3s were lifers. Hall monitor my sophomore year and RA the rest. I loved Johnstone on game days. You could step out of our room on the street. Shoeboxes for girls was across the street. I would give quite a bit to go back and know what I know now.

E-3 in 77. Still shake my head remembering breathing in the asbestos ceiling insulation while sleeping in my built up bunk bed. Enjoyed dragging a chair and cooler of beer into the showers for a steam bath with the neighbors. Good Times ..

Lived on E5 83 to 85. Moved to F5 the annex but still spent most of my time on E5 with the Lugoff boys. Still my best friends. Remember seeing one of my friends Pete standing on a broken toilet flushing it over and over to get water into the halls. I try and explain to my kids common showers and no doors on the toilets but they cannot relate. Remember playing nerf b-ball and falling through the gun racks into the other room. Building up beds. They do not allow it now. Was the first test of any engineer. Some we works of art. Bought a couch for 10 dollars and had it until I graduated. So comfortable and almost 8 feet long. So many memories. One of my kids has graduated college and the other is a junior. Such a different experience now.
