The last NCAA ranking has us ranked 53 in total defense. Y’all happy with that?

For a top 10 team with a leading offense, D will be our downfall against Pitt or Miami.

Who have played that’s any good since the Georgia game?

They weren't going to just quit playing and give up, regardless of whether or not they had a realistic chance of coming back. I would hope Dabo would do the same thing in that situation and keep fighting showing the players to never give up.

Nope I disagree. We haven’t done it in YEARS. We couldn’t because were have rarely been ahead by this much for the last 3-4 yrs

Back when we started blowing people out in ‘15/16 our reserves took their lumps too. But over time those reserves got better and locked up opponents which in turn allowed the kids behind them to get in. It fed upon itself, a snowball if you will.

That cycle got broken in the DJ years and we are almost starting over again with building real true depth with actual game experience

I don’t mind the fact that we play backups. In fact, it is great that we do. I do mind the fact that we don’t still let the backups run our normal try to score offense.

Mop up crew should be better. True, in tight games they won't see teh field . .UNLESS we have injuries. And for that reason the Mop up crew counts. They are not holding their own at the end of the games.

The reason our depth is bad is because we dont use the portal. Toriano pride, Bentley, mukuba, malcom greene, and fred davis all would have helped a lot this year.

Which is why you play the backups now, so they

1) get playing time and see on film where they really are in their progression

2) build their confidence so we then have functional depth

We haven’t been able to do this during the DJ and Cade Y1 years because we weren’t blowing people out like we’re doing now again

You need to be equally concerned about how to score on that same teams defense. The crap we have been playing isn’t exactly iron sharpening iron. 🙄

Clemson and FSU will each have more defensive players drafted than "that team" in higher rounds. The Clemson offense has faced FSU on their home field when they were trying not to have Clemson break their legendary coach's record(they played inspired/harder). And, Clemson offense plays against a top 15 defense daily( if we are just talking starters ).

So, not concerned to answer the original Chicken posters question. And, much like other years, folks give the fact "that team" has a particular patch on their jersey far too much credit. Using that conferences logic: "with Vandy struggling to beat Ball State - I said, Ball State at home yet they smoked Alabama - what does that say"?

The hype machine is real. Georgia beat Clemson - but the offense came out of that game with a ton of confidence actually. The plays were there if executed. Ironically, it has helped this Tigers offense because they know it's just a matter of "them doing them" and wasn't as much about what the opponent did.

We are good in that way and not worried in short about the ability to score on that team. We have faced a better sorry excuse conference defense already and came away knowing it's there to be had if we execute.

The mass subbing has definitely hurt our overall numbers but Dabo has always done that and maintained top 10 level D’s.
Our 1s have gotten gashed more this year than normal and the 3rd and Longs have converted a ridiculous amount of times.
Our D obviously isn’t as bad as the ranking makes it look but it’s not what we’ve been accustomed to (even EMac said that) and the concern is warranted.

First of all, who would have thought, after last year, that our offense would be carrying our defense.

Lots of people here are talking about how our defensive stats and rankings are being distorted by substituting so freely. They may be right, but they may just be whistling past the graveyard. I think the Louisville game will tell us much.

I think it's likely good enough for the rest of our schedule. South Carolina is surprisingly good, but that's because of their defense, not their offense. Louisville and Pitt are better offenses than any we've faced since UGA, but we should win. I do think our defense will keep us from being a serious threat in the playoffs.

In the first few quarters our D I'd stronger than 40 acres of garlic...only when we sub the rest of the team do mistakes show! Play the whole team if you have a 30 point lead...some of our subs will develop and we will be a better overall team...who knows what's down the road? We still have a few holes in the defensive backfield but having injuries return we are starting to dominate! These teams that give up 35 and still win may give up 65 to our O...and only get 20 from our D! Don't worry, be happy!

The first group... no, they arent our best ever but they are good enough to have a great year. The 2nd group and on is still growing. But that is the great thing about these blowout wins, these busted plays and such during garbage times is killing our defensive rankings but they are giving these young guys good reps and film to learn how to be better.
By the end of the season, some of these guys that are struggling will be ready to go and if not this year, it will help tremendously next season.
Clemson has always developed its depth this way in years when it has over matched opponents... and it usually paid off come playoff time.
