It's Time to Ask the Question

2

Sep 13, 2023, 7:26 AM

I see/read a LOT of posts about Dabo. A lot of blind faith in him and slightly more negative posts about him and the staff. I'm hoping we can do this objectively but color me dumb.

The question I always ask when people start the "get rid of him talk" is simply: Realistically, who would you replace him with? The only thing you get to throw out the window for this is Dabo's buyout. If the coach you would replace him with has a buyout, you have to address it in your case for them.

Exactly. I am a hard core supporter of all things Clemson (aka “pumper” on this site) and Dabo has brought us some of our best moments. I also don’t agree with every decision or call he makes. I just don’t do it in a loud, public manner. You are exactly right. In the end you have to answer the question “who would you rather have?” And also if you can name someone, is that coach available?

My question is,

what does this have to do with Harry Potter?

In case this is a serious question, it's not about Harry Potter. It's just the scene where Voldemort says "Begin" the assault on Hogwart's. That's all. No assertion that everybody that wants to replace Dabo is evil, just...begin.

This has been my thought the entire time, Dabo could’ve promised Riley the HC gig and is getting ready to step away due to the landscape of college sports.

The get rid of Dabo talk is idiotic, BUT

1

Sep 13, 2023, 8:09 AM

The "who you gonna get?" argument is equally stupid. We heard it when people wanted rid of Elliott, heard it when people wanted rid of Streeter. Its a stupid argument. You hear it all across sports. Yea well who you gonna get if you get rid of . Not at least trying something new is far worse than keeping someone who clearly isnt hacking it. Ah well, we might not be able to find someone better so lets just keep doing what we are doing.....durrrrrr

I understand you don't think it's time to fire Dabo. Neither do I but, your take in this scenario would be fire Dabo and figure it out? I applaud your FAFO mindset but I can't get on that tractor.

Remember, Dabo didn't even come into that job under those circumstances. Bowden just quit in the middle of the season when confronted by TDP.

Obviously the admin has a list of candidates if they intend on making a move. Im suggesting that you dont keep a loser simply because you fear the next guy might not do better.

Cool. I'm just asking if you are the administration, who is on your short list? If you don't want to play the game, no harm. I'm just curious of those that think it's time to pull the cord, who would you go after?

I'm not here to attack anybody personally, but I do want to kick an argument's buttocks.

Re: Brent Venables or Jeff Scott***

Sep 13, 2023, 9:04 AM

I don't think either is realistic.

Any coach in the SEC or B1G isn't leaving for a spot of their own free will outside those 2 conferences. There's too much instability. I promise if they aren't thinking that way, their agents are. OU is BV's dream job. He enjoyed his time at Clemson but Norman is the top of the mountain for BV. He might come back to Clemson but it would only be because things did not go as well as he planned at OU. I will leave the caveat that when Saban retires, BV might get an itch to take on the crazy that is Tuscaloosa but only if his stay at OU is top flight.

Jeff Scott...he was, checks enterwebz, 4-26 at USF. Some people are perfect lieutenants but terrible generals. At this point in his career, this is Jeff Scott. That dude can whip recruits into a frenzy and coach up the WR spots but he isn't ready for a HC position. At this point and time, is Clemson's administration and fan base willing to wait out him growing into the job? It doesn't feel like it.

Please feel free to counter.

Sep 13, 2023, 12:23 PM [ in reply to Brent Venables or Jeff Scott*** ]

Why do we have to be so incestuous? If we were going to hire a head coach from within, it's Riley. But I would likely go to the NFL.

Eric Bieniemy (best living offensive mind)
Kellen Moore (great developer of QBs and a real class act)
Shane Steichen (another great offensive mind and QB developer)
Brian Callahan (Players adore him, he's not a micro-manager which is the worst thing for HCs to be, he's worked with some of the most legendary QBs in history which would be attractive to recruits (Peyton, Stafford, Derek Carr, and now Burrow).

We could poach a head coach from another school since we're willing to pay so much more. Someone like Franklin. I'm not ready to anoint Deion like some others, but he might be the perfect coach to succeed in today's world. And even though I think he's a terrible person, he seems like he won't tolerate BS from players that would hurt his team's chances.

Help me because I’m slow. Are we firing him because we couldn’t make the playoffs 8 years in a row, because he doesn’t use the portal, or because he lost to Duke and SC for the first time in several years.?

It just helps me understand the rationale to get rid of the most successful coach in our history by a wide margin and then I can help you identify his replacement.

I know there are a lot of us that are frustrated the direction the football program is going in. It appears to be trending down. Some may want Dabo to be fired. I, on the other hand think he needs to make some tough decisions if he wants to keep his program relevant and also if he wants to keep his job 3 years from now. I don't see a better option than him right now and even if there were a better option out there, he hasn't done enough yet to get the boot. I think some of you forget he is the top 2-3 highest paid coach which means he is expected to compete for CFP berths and Nattys. I understand that it won't happen every year, but he is compensated like those are the expectations. There are coaches who are compensated less, that are on the hot seat and their programs are currently more relevant than the current state of Clemson's.

The thing that gets others and myself riled up is when he talks about clear problems and says they aren't problems. You don't have to be a coach on any level to see the problems that exist in this program. We have problems at WR, OL, and possibly QB. But Dabo would tell you that simply isn't the case. He has also told us that the Transfer portal wouldn't fix any of these problems. That simply isn't the case. Nobody is expecting him to do a complete overhaul of the players through the transfer portal, but there have been quality players at positions of need in the transfer portal. WR is one of our weaker positions. So if Dabo isn't willing to let Grisham go, then perhaps they need to go get a quality WR from the portal because the players are not developing under Grisham or we are completely missing on talent which I find hard to believe year after year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Id rather overhaul position staff than players

1

Sep 13, 2023, 9:35 AM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He’s an amazing coach who has done an outstanding job here.

My concerns, as I’ve expressed many times, are the following:

1. Poor staff hires recently. The quality of the coaches Dabo has brought in over the last few years is much lower than what we saw when we were an elite program. Dabo is failing his team and his program by not bringing in the best and brightest coaches.

2. Poor player development. We clearly have plenty of talent, if recruiting rankings are to be believed. But in recent years, that talent is often not developed well. We used to be known for player development. Now we are bad at it.

3. Unwillingness to use the transfer portal. Dabo communicates rigidity and an unwillingness to do everything he can to help our program when he avoids using the portal.

4. Lack of awareness about his public comments. Dabo is outspoken, and that’s part of his appeal. But he seems to lack perspective at times as to how his comments might come across. His comments about NIL and the transfer portal have earned him the reputation for being against both. That reputation is hurting the public perception of our program.

Dabo needs to make some significant changes in my opinion. Our decline the last few seasons isn’t just because we had the wrong QB or needed a new OC. The problems run much deeper, and I hope Dabo recognizes that. My concern is that he doesn’t see the significance of some of these issues and will thus minimize the effort needed to correct them.

I don’t want to get rid of Dabo. I just want him to be more open-minded, and get the fire back that he used to have. I miss that Dabo.

This is my opinion. And it’s just an opinion. Dabo should not and will not ever be terminated at Clemson. You don’t fire a coach that’s won 2 titles and has had the success he has. He will have a statue.

This is what I think is going to happen. Dabo is going to have to decide for himself if he can embrace the new landscape in college football. Can he live with himself and do things like use the portal in a meaningful way and live with himself? If he just can’t, I think Dabo will walk away and enjoy his life and maybe come back when they get all this under control.

Maybe this is why Riley is here? Who knows. I want Dabo to adapt and stay forever.
