Kina Pol-ish, but better for Lunge: Is Mexico on your "no-go" list?

We were originally looking at a resort in Mexico for our adult vacation a couple of years back, but I put my foot down and told my wife I'm not going to Mexico. We went to Belize instead. Now we have a friend looking to plan a 40th in Mexico, and the same question is coming up again.

For me, Mexico is a non-negotiable no-go. Even the results. Some of it has to do with cartel violence, which now regularly spills into resort areas. But, most of it comes down to government corruption. The Mexican government is corrupt from federal to local levels. If something happens to you in Mexico, and the chances of it being something from theft to murder is fairly high, you cannot count on the police for assistance. There is no rule of law except graft and violence. To me, that is not a risk I'm willing to take, especially when there are other alternatives. Like, there is a reason why Mexican resorts are cheap.

I'm not even going to ask if AITA because to me this isn't paranoia. This is an objective reading of the news and stories coming out of there. But, just curious how others feel about it.

Assuming you are looking for sand and water, I'll take many other spots in the caribbean because much nicer.

Wouldn't be overly worried about the news getting you worked up though. Those in resort areas, with some exception, understand political consequences of doing dumbshid. They also understand the financial impact of tourism locally.

Same with Jamaica. It's on the US Gumment no-go list and folks are highly advised to not stray from tourist areas. Sheeeeyiit, I've been all over that country. Folks are nice AF. Even though poor and 3rd world, they appreciate peeps coming to spend some cash.

We honeymooned there back in 2018 and were a little nervous as cartel activity was spilling over to tourist areas even then (mostly Puerto Vallarta and Cancun, I believe). We stayed at a great resort and had a fantastic time.

It has definitely gotten worse since then but I would still go if the opportunity was right. However, I'd rather go somewhere else. We loved the resort we booked but the beach wasn't great. I'd rather go to the islands.

Your point about corruption in the government is 100% spot on. A family member retired there and bought a condo. Hearing about that process made me want to donate to the Libertarian Party. Just massive amounts of red tape, plus incompetence, plus zero effort by the government.

Pleasant AF. Got to speak Spanish with the natives, went to a messican authentic restaurant (although as much for tourists as locals)

Let a guy swindle me out of a few bucks to keep him gainfully employed since he had been recently deported, and overall had a fantastic time. Only spent 8 hours there, but sill yes I'd go back

Ain't no Mexican police gonna let some hoodlums mess with the whitest tourist they've ever seen walking through the main tourist strip with his wife and daughter in broad daylight

My sister and her wife have been 3 times this year, trying to figure out where in Mexico they're going to move. They got back a few weeks ago from San Marcos where they did Dia De Los Muertos, which I think aerozeptallica also did in a different town. Nothing but positive reports about the people, culture, vibe, safety, etc. Painting the entire country as being overrun by cartel violence just isn't accurate. There are certainly cities and regions where that's more true, but that's not most of the country. Don't be stupid and don't go to stupid places in Mexico.

Padre is not a politically charged dude and we've never once spoken about anything related to Portland or Oregon for that matter.

His exact comment (well, translated) was:

Portland was a really nice city. They had some homeless encampments around town, but we walked by them at night and everyone was just tucked in their tents minding their own business.

This was a couple of dudes aged 73-75.

It's a large diverse country. Certain states I would avoid and certain resort areas I would avoid, but there are plenty of areas that are safer than many places in the U.S.

I wouldn't drive after dark or go to places you would avoid here, but no, it wouldn't be a hard no.

Belize has some great areas and since English is the language there, that's a plus, but I sure as hell wouldn't do much wandering around Belize City, which I doubt you did anyways.

Merida is an easy flight and is a very safe and cool place to spend some time in Mexico and the food alone makes that trip a good one.

And my mother will be arrested on the spot if she ever sets foot in Australia again, which she won't.

Mexico is safe if you stay in a resort area, not safe outside of resort areas but still touristy areas. Safe again in non-tourist areas. Like for example, Cancun is safe. Go south and the Mayan Riviera, is NOT safe. But drive over to Merida, away from the tourists, and it's safe again.

True story, we had our honeymoon on the Mayan Riviera at a place called Maroma. It was about 20 miles south of the Cancun airport, on the Mayan Riviera. The hotel was in the middle of nowhere. Go out on the beach and look left, look right, NOTHING,. No buildings or hotels for several MILES, both ways. Was amazing to walk those beaches, far dirtier than you'd expect. Hotel was 5-star though. You drove in off the highway and there was a guard gate with a guard, carrying a machine gun. The whole hotel property was fenced in with razor wire, but you couldn't tell because it was not near the places guests walk. At night, walking around, several times we caught sight of the armed guards, dressed in all black, carrying machine guns. I felt safer at that hotel than anywhere I've ever stayed.
