Almost promise you there is lead paint throughout. There may be asbestos insulation around all the furnace pipes for heating.

Lead paint and asbestos are the least of the toxic stuff that was in Johnstone

during my time there... The built up layers of sour beer, vomit and pisz that permeated Johnstone that saturated those hall carpets for decades are enough to require full up Tyvek suits and respirators to remove...

Pretty sure those of us that survived a full year of Johnstone (3 semesters for me) have a better immune system than those that missed that luxury.

All demolition work in the state of SC is required By DHEC to have an asbestos inspection, except homesteads. If asbestos is discovered here, removal will be extremely expensive.

Yup, it’s asbestos.

During the project’s first phase, asbestos-containing materials will be removed according to strict South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) regulations. Work areas will be sealed with plastic and non-friable asbestos-containing materials will be removed and disposed of from the basement areas of Union, Johnstone Hall and Harcombe Dining Hall by certified abatement contractors

I'm afraid Clemson students today will never fully develop their character without the experience of living in Johnstone.

Did they recently paint the steel beams? I find it hard to believe they would

look that good unless they did. Get them looking good to demolish them?

More likely, they originally had asbestos sprayed on them as fire retardant, and the black coating got applied after asbestos abatement.

I remember during orienation they showed us the shoeboxes and the Hi-rises, but we took a stroll to get a glimpse of Johnstone and went to E1 and took a peak at the rooms, it was scary, like the psych in 19th century hospital.
