How are we 123rd on special teams?

Gunn kicks everything out of the end zone, our punter is average(no blocks), we have no fumbles on kick off or punt returns(Williams is a little above average when he has the opportunity to return a punt), our opposition hasn't returned a kick or a punt to amount to anything and Hauser hasn't missed an extra point or a field goal. The only negative on special teams at all are two blocked field goals. 123rd really?

I wondered the same. Our punting yards are below average, FG % is on par, no issues with KOs. I guess we had 2 fgs blocked and we haven't blocked any. We are scoring more TDs so our FG #'s are lower than a lot of teams. But I dont see anything that would put us below avg. Its not like last year when we were 50% on FGs or lower even.

Two FGs blocked and why they go against our FG kicker is beyond me.

He had nothing to do with our O-line's failed blocking.

Our o-line on FG's is part of special teams not just the kicker.

needs to pick up about 10 more yards because Hauser's longest this year is only 38 yards..".....And every time I was like, " You moron...he hasn't tried one longer than 38 yards....".

Probably because we pretty much fair catch everything, which is a tactic I approve of, as it is supported by the analytics. They are probably measuring return yardage.

Even though he does fair catch a lot, Williams is in top 20 for average yards per return. Have we had a punt blocked?

Two blocked field goals and a blocked extra point. Through 6 games that's gonna land you at the back of the pack.

He has surprised me this year... last year he was one of our biggest weapons last year flipping the field and pinning teams inside the 20. His punts just don't have it this year.

I don’t know what stats are included, but we don’t pin opponents inside the 10 yard line very often. Seems other teams pin us there a lot more than we do. I’m thinking our net yards per punt are relatively low. I didn’t research anything, just going by my observations from games.

Our punting has to be 123rd but I think the rest is above average.

As long as the kicking game does not beat you it makes no difference.

Mac Lain even said last week, "VAs punter got handled by Louisville, yet Clemson will make him look like a pro". So something is definitely up with STs.

Almost every team we've faced has had better net punt yards; we rarely return

punts; two FGs blocked; and we never attempt a block or a fake. Most of the defense of our ST in this thread is that we haven't screwed up that much. Feels like ST is purely procedural and not a way to gain an advantage for our team. It is a neglected third phase of the game.
Go Tigers!

I’ve seen more first downs from blocked punt attempts than blocked punts. Just don’t let them make a first down off of a faked punt!

Punting is deplorable and has been for years...

Literally every team we face has a better punter, and in most case, significantly better. Clemson currently ranks 83rd out of 133 teams in net punting with a net average below 40 yards (38.31). I'm sorry, but that stinks!

As far as our punts being a couple of yards shorter than others, who says a longer punt is better than one that doesn't allow a return? You can outkick your coverage and all that.

it's also about in field position also, we rarely punt and if we do, we are

probably near or in plus territory because we've moved the ball some. You are trying to place the ball inside the 20 not flip a field from your on 20 like a lot of those bad team punters are doing. For Clemson, I usually look at how many we have downed inside the 20 as the key stat. If its a 28 yard punt from the other teams 40 with no return then it's a great punt in my book.
Anybody have our downed inside the 20 stats for this year? Spiers was very good at this.
