Question for you lungers...
Jan 15, 2013, 12:55 PM

|
At what age did you get married? If you're not married and never have been married, how old are you?
Me, I'm 27 and unmarried, and don't really have any prospects right now. Just curious to hear when things happened for what seems like a pretty successful group of folks.

In a nutshell, my "works" based salvation didn't pan out when my mom died much too young.
I spent a couple of years being angry at the almighty, and eventually found out what grace was all about.
Still learning.

[ in reply to ATTENTION: THREAD ABOUT TO GET ALL RELIGIOUSLY ] |

While I'm sure my experiences haven't been as intense as losing your mom, I'm really wavering between doubting God and the complete surrender I know is required to have a full relationship with God as a result of some of my romantic relationships. It's starting to get hard to tell if what's ruining these relationships is my incomplete devotion or whether it's making any big deal of that devotion at all.
For instance, my most recent relationship ended, more or less, because of differences of opinion (of the kind you'll probably always have when you're a Christian- however doubtful of one you are- and you're dating someone who is nominally Christian or not Christian) about sex and marriage. That is awfully hard to accept, especially when you're completely compatible in every way, and when you know you love eachother.

I think it probably has more to do with the fact that I've been practicing Christianity awfully lackadaisically. There's bound to be conflict in a relationship you have with somebody when you're conflicted yourself.

I always thought it was trite when people would say you just need to seek God more...
I guess I took that to mean I needed to try harder. Which I got tired of trying harder.
I would look at that same comment now and say that it is to find the heart of Christ, and it will lead you to the one that He wants for you. He wants your complete trust. His strength is made perfect in your weakness. It is difficult for men to be weak. But when we deny ourselves (reject the pull of external, often selfish motives) take up our cross and follow him, He will lead us to fulfillment and passion.
It's when we try to fill the Jesus sized hole in our lives with everything else (including gf's or wives) is where we get into trouble. You need to be a complete person in Christ before you can truly give another the love she needs. She can't "complete you" You can't need her to be complete.
That's a lot of words, I hope it makes some level of sense.

[ in reply to about to get more religiousy... ] |

They feel the urge to have sex, but because of their devotion to God and The Bible, they can't until they get married. So, they get married really young.
Was marriage ever considered by you?

Cam said it was the only thing that was holding up the relationship. They connected on every other level, so at that point what is the problem? It's not like he is in his early 20s or a teenager where they are confusing lust with love. At least, that's not what it sounds like.
I agree it happens too often and usually with the super religious where they really want to have sex, but feel pressure to marry before doing so. That almost always leads to problems. But that doesn't sound like Cam's situation.
I get that marriage isn't just about love or whatever as there are financial, career, timing issues that are all in play, but I also think it's crazy and foolish to let the woman of your dreams go, for whatever the reason.

we weren't really missing that so much as we disagreed about it. I don't want to get too much more into specifics than that. If it sounds like a strange reason, it is, but that disagreement was definitely causing some separation between us and I didn't really do what I needed to do to resolve the issue. In fact, I made it worse by something I said.

I've seen how this road ends. "If I had only been a better person then maybe God would have allowed..."
It doesn't work that way. He loves you and has your best interests at heart. Even if you were perfect, he wouldn't love you any more/less.
If you were perfect...you wouldn't need him.
It's not about you and what you can do, will do or have done. It's about Him.

I just meant that I'm coming to realize that I might be missing out on some of the ways God wants to bless me by doing things my own way. Then again, my hope in those blessings is waning a bit. I suppose I'm impatient and want things on my schedule.

people are raised with all sorts of different backgrounds. Amazing how sheltered you are...and what you believe is normal.
It's been a long road of where I can see a lot of damage took place in my upbringing, but I can still see some foundational positives too.
Everybody's got a story.

24 not married...

Made the mistake of dating a chick basically throughout college and then it ended up not working out. However, living the life of a single male right out of college is pretty sweet.

I have bad examples. My dad only married once, but has had a live in girlfriend since 2004. He is 60, she is 45, go him. My mother has been married 5 times and told the world she is unhappy in this one. She is only 53. She'll get no pity from me about that, I told her not to do it.

The relationship should also be a few months old for the holidays. I've found that is when people get the most crazy and can see the cracks in a relationship. If you are in that new lovey stage, you won't notice.

and that's the kind of story that's heartening. I've always been the type that was dating to marry, although I've been very laid back about it and never tried to force anything. Just broke up with a girl I'd met in grad school and had a pretty intense relationship with for the last 9 months, and I'm starting to worry what I've been doing wrong.

You are thinking like a girl. You should be out banging everything that moves. Chicks don't like hanging out with dudes that want to get married. They need the challenge of changing you into something you don't want to be. They're ####### crazy like that.
I have a friend that has been trying to get married for 5 years and can't for the same reason. He treats every relationship like it is going to be the one that lasts forever. Don't force it, chief

In fact, the break up with this last girl happened last week and I'm going out on a date with somebody else on Thursday.

No matter how the sleeping arrangements end up, there is no reason for a quick label. If you can find at least one more to go out with during that time, it is better.

I was in a relationship with someone else for the longest time. That person decided to up and be a missionary. We hadn't made our relationship permanent because I was struggling with finishing grad school then with getting a decent job.
Then several jobs in several states until I settled in Greensboro.

Re: A Male Fairy Tale
Jan 15, 2013, 2:46 PM
|
|
A Male Fairy Tale: Once upon a time, a Prince asked a beautiful Princess, "Will you marry me?" The Princess said, "No!!!" And the Prince lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and banged skinny long-legged big-tittedbroads and hunted and fished and raced cars and went to naked bars and dated women half his age and drank whiskey, beer and Captain Morgan and never heard bitching and never paid child support or alimony and banged cheerleaders and kept his house and guns and ate spam and potato chips and beans and blew enormous farts and never got cheated on while he was at work and all his friends and family thought he was frikin cool as hell and he had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up. The end.

A Male Fairy Tale:
Once upon a time, a Prince asked a beautiful Princess, "Will you marry me?" The Princess said, "No!!!" And the Prince lived happily ever after until he got tired of jacking off.

She was 22. WAY outkicked my coverage. Got two years in so far. Marriage requires some sacrifices and compromises, but I think the good has outweighed the bad so far. In the end, it's all about whether you focus on what you're missing out on or whether you're intentionally grateful for what you're being blessed with.
