I love where the program is now just like almost everyone on this board, but at what point does this become ridiculous and unsustainable? Now Venables is one of the top assistant coaches in the country and should be paid as such, before anyone goes off the deep end here, my commentary is on college coaches salaries in general. I am using Venables as an example because of the topic of this article.
He has coached at Clemson for 6 seasons now. I do not recall his pay in 2012 in his first year here. In 2013 he made $800,000 and was tied for the 6th highest paid assistant coach. In 2018 he will make $2,200,000 which is an increase of 275% in 5 seasons which averages to 55% raise every year. He just had a salary increase to $2,000,000 (a 17% raise), and 5 months later essentially got an additional 10% without calling it a salary.
In 2013 the 6th highest assistant coach salary was $700,000. In 2017 (5 years later) the 6th highest assistant coach salary was $1,300,000. This is an 86% increase or 17% per year.
It's gotten to the point that these contracts are renegotiated every year. So as this article states he has a 5 year deal that pays him $2,000,000 per year plus these bonuses. If things go as they have for the past few seasons we can safely assume that his salary for 2019 will be renegotiated to $2,200,000 - $2,300,000 next winter, plus the retention bonus. How is this arms race of coaching salaries sustainable over the next 10-15 years??? Since being at Clemson BV has averaged over a 50% raise per year. If we take a "conservative" number and say a 15% raise every year his salary would increase by over 350% in the next decade. That would put his 2028 salary at $7,000,000.
As far as head coaches salaries, in 2013 the average pay of the top 10 highest paid head coaches was $4,650,000. In 2017 this average was $6,600,000. which was a 8.5% increase. If this trend also continues by roughly 10% a year in 10 years the salaries will increase by 235%. This means that the average salary of the top 10 coaches in 2028 could be $15,500,000. That's not even the highest salary, just the average! We could see coaches making $20 million or more by then.
At what point does the bubble burst on the coaching salaries?

Good point.
And, this probably explains what's going on with our recruiting. All New Spring funds have been funneled into an account to pay BV rather than recruits.
This is not sustainable.

I see what you mean. If you take a look at industry CEO it is the same.
, Escalating like crazy. But in today's society it takes big dollars to keep good people. If the money is not there for our coaches then another team will reach out and grab them and then we start all over again. Do we want to lose our coaches, I don't wish we could give to our players for making Clemson such a phenom. Do we want to get in the position South Carolina is in by hunting for a coach every year, no I don't.from the student athletes to Dabo let's enjoy.

Not trying to be a correctionist here, but for the sake of properly understanding this, Venables average raise is more like ~23% rather than 55% annually. Some of your other %'s seem a bit miscalculated as well.
Still, crazy high growth rate and I agree that at some point these salaries have to level off or we will see some sort of armageddon, or mutiny.

You are correct that I did not take the time to compound the raises as the salary grew each year. Laziness I suppose. I just calculated the difference between now and 5 years ago and just divided it evenly over the years. For the Venables number the average 55% yearly raise was really just on the first year, so it would have been better stating it as a $440,000 average yearly raise.
I did compound the projected salaries of the coaches for the 10 year numbers though.

I don't have a clue to when it will burst, but I do believe that not so far in the future, these coaching salaries will burst wide the fk open. Teachers and professors are going to cry foul loud and clear, and the government will step in declaring that it has went far enough, and then there will be a tax put on college sports that will help increase the salaries of teachers and professors that work at these Power Five conferences that has so much money to pay coaches that don't help these players to become any smarter. It is the teachers and professors that are dealing with keeping these players academically eligible so that they can play college sports!!! IMO, I believe they deserve a piece of pie!!! And if and when this happens, there will have to be a cap put on what a college coach can be paid at each level. To be honest, I'm surprised that it hasn't already happen.
The main thing is that only 2% of college athletes can get a job playing sports, when most graduating college students can get a pretty good job. When connecting the training of college athletes that can gain employment in professional sports is only 2%. Then there is the college graduating student of a much higher percentage of gaining employment at a higher wage than non college trained. I say that college teachers and professors deserve a piece of their college sport pie, they are the one attempting to educate them Jocks, and they must be doing their job bc the jocks are remaining academically eligible, so pay them from all the money they have to pay coaches, they have done their job in behalf of the college sport world also!!!

BV is worth every dime IMO but, I didn't see any incentives there for his get back man, surely he should get a raise also bc BV has never had a side line penalty with the get back man on the job!!!
