Why was Brownell and the team so confused in the last 30 seconds?

I've never quite seen a coach so panicked and a team so unorganized in that situation. Players in and out of the huddle, Brownell yelling and screaming with no one listening or looking like they are understanding. Players at the free throw line still wandering around not knowing where or what they should be doing. It was chaos at the end.

What was up with that? This is actually a legit question I had last night not a troll...I just was too excited about seeing that win last night and didn't want to ruin the moment. But this morning I am still curious what the heck was happening.

I thought Brownell was over-coaching the last couple of minutes - particularly when drawing up defensive schemes with 19 seconds left and a 4-point lead.

All he needed to say was "Let 'em shoot, but no fouls".

Chase Hunter's block at the end was incredibly good - but I don't think it was a wise time to try it.

Bad analysis. That block stopped the momentum. When it’s that wide open and easy, take the block every time. I guess we agree to disagree. Your method is the prevent defense method. Foot off the gas. Go for he kill. Use what got you there.

75-71 with 8.9 seconds.

* If Duke makes the layup without a foul, it's a 2-point game with a possibility for them to steal the inbounds pass and get a tie - maybe even a kickout and a 3-pointer to go ahead.

* If Hunter fouls and Duke gets the layup and extra point, it's a 1-point lead with the same possibility for a steal and 2-pointer to win for Duke.... no need for the 3-pointer.

Whatever floats your boat, but no question that it was a tremendous play.

It was simple. It was a short time out. Brad sent Del to check in and Lakhin was not gathered until the last second. Time ended, players were pushed out by the ref. No issue, no problem, we won, nuff said.

I agree it was very unusual and not normal. It scared me to see them acting that way.

Maybe the players were extremely excited and ready to celebrate but their coach knew that you can't stop coaching/playing until the final whistle? Somehow you're finding something negative in a victory over the number two team in the country that came in on a sixteen game win streak.

Yes … my conclusion also. Teams should play the entire game … celebrate after the final buzzer.

Over coaching is apparently bad....

If he didn't do that and there was some sort of substitution mishap, the haters would bring it up for years.

Over coaching wasn't my concern or question.

My question was why the mass confusion and very visible unorganization at the end of one of the greatest victory's in Clemson Basketball history?

I know there are some on here who like create drama out of anything. I'm glad you aren't one of those folks. More importantly, any "confusion" that existed didn't cost us anything.

It’s as simple as you have young men with the excitement of their biggest win of the year. You don’t celebrate until it’s over and Brad had to bust them to get them to focus until 0:00 on the clock. With Duke and the ACC offficiatimg anything is possible til 0:00.

And yet after a huge win you couldn't help but create a thread to nitpick coach brownell over something that had no effect on the outcome... and then you tag JK as if he was in the huddle and knew the fine details of what exactly happened... and then accuse him of deflecting.

You're being completely disingenuous and this whole thread is a deflection from beating the #2 team in the country

It was a genuine question. You didn't have to respond at all if you didn't like the thread. I tagged JK because I believe him to be extremely knowledgeable about our team. He knew what is was asking and referring to but chose not to answer.

I'm sorry I got your panties all wadded up.

I’m just glad we weren’t off a long break like last year’s close contest.

I think Brownell was getting mad when trying to talk to the 5 guys that were going to be on the floor at the end. One was talking to an assistant coach instead. I'd have to see it again, but he was pretty upset about it and he looked like he had some words to say to that assistant. It was a regular timeout, not a tv one, so there wasn't much time.

I think at the last short break he was trying to get Del Jones into the game for ballhandling/FT%. That was with about 7 seconds to go.

I saw chase take the game out of the officials, the coaches, the other players hands. He decided it was over.
