Why would you offer a scholarship to a kid that has a free ride? I don’t know if they do or don’t, just asking if getting a freebie regardless.

You are wrong. That applies to most private schools but not public schools like Clemson. Clay is a preferred walk on and his fam will pay his tuition. Also PWOs sign to play football as a walk on. It’s a gesture of respect which is something some of you need to explore

Love it! What young man wouldn’t want to play for his Dad? I’ve watched it in plenty of collegiate games. The Sweeney men certainly contribute. I watched Will save more than one bad snap while holding for a kick. Go Tigers!!

Count me as one who cares also. You can bet this kid will give his heart and soul to the program and work like crazy to try to get playing time. Maybe he never gets there but I would bet he will make his his team mates better by challenging them to do their best.

WHAT HE WAS SIGNING . . . . it could be a Valentine's card to his Momma.
That young man has earned the right to have a moment with his parents that gives him and everyone watching some encouragement that anything is possible.
The numbskull I responded to was trolling saying - what is he signing, a blank sheet of paper ? And I responded - who cares what he is signing - he is being given a shot at being a Clemson Tiger - THAT is a HUGE accomplishment.
The dude went on to say that maybe it was all for show . . . that family is NOT about being showy. They are about doing right & defending their faith & their values & what they believe in.

I can't believe folks took what I said as being shade at Clay and the Swinneys - nothing could be further from the truth.
The article on Clay being a huge recruiter for us is exactly what you would expect from this awesome family.

Obed® linked - thanks Obed . . .
"The first reaction of many Clemson fans is to question Dabo for awarding a scholarship to his son Drew rather than paying Drew's tuition and saving the precious scholarship for another 4-star or 5-star recruit. While I understand the rationale, in my opinion, Drew, like his big brother Will before him, has earned the scholarship with his hard work and dedication for 3 years as a walk-on. Regardless of how much money Dabo makes, Drew has rightfully earned his scholarship and deserves it according to Dabo, who is a man of principle. Those principles tell him that he shouldn't treat Will and Drew differently than his other players because they are his sons. And as a former walk-on himself, this is a subject near and dear to Dabo's heart and something he takes very seriously. Incidentally, I wouldn't be surprised if Dabo gave Will's and Drew's tuition money to charity after they were placed on scholarship. It's not about the money, folks. And for those wondering why Drew should be on scholarship before Hunter Helms, who is currently No.2 on the quarterback depth chart, Drew has been in the program 2 years longer than Helms, who will receive his scholarship in January."
A scholly was EARNED by Drew for one semester - and if I understand schollies at all, which I don't - it was a Spring scholly that was just laying around - unused.
So he gives out 7 of them - and in the fall - if we need them back - he can do that to get who we need, when we need, where we need.
The ongoing blather on here about not having schollies when we need them seems remarkably silly in light of this info from someone who seems to know what's up.

This seems like a poor excuse to justify Dabo's nepotism.
Feb 7, 2022, 6:02 PM
|
|
It sure was great that Clemson gave a schollie to Will Swinney instead of a D-1 caliber wide receiver. When we had a rash of injuries at WR this year, we were stuck with 0-star Will Swinney as a starting receiver in a bowl game that went down to the wire.
And who could forget when the coaches had to convert a D-1 caliber WR to CB because Dabo gifted nepotism scholarships to the completely unserviceable DBs, Amir Trapp and Brian Dawkins, Jr? It nearly cost us a loss to NCSU, IIRC.
Nepotism is awesome. Let the excuse-making continue...

I just tallied my last 20 posts. Check my work but I would say I made 3 negative, 9 neutral, and 8 positive posts. That's 15% negative posts, but for some reason, you only remember the negative ones. That tends to indicate that you're very intolerant of negative posts. I'm sure that after you see all of my positive posts (linked below) you'll come back here to admit that you were wrong and apologize.
Per your request, here's a link to a positive post... https://www.tigernet.com/clemson-forum/message/i-feel-better-about-the-promotions-after-reading-this-30030336#30030336 I feel better about the promotions after reading this [1] ... especially that Arians quote. (I assume most of the article came from the AD's PR Dept.) Seems like Dabo has had a succession plan in place for a while. Can't wait to see how it turns out. Fingers crossed. Go Tigers!
And here's my posting history so that you can see for yourself and maybe do some introspection... https://www.tigernet.com/user/razzmatazz-66538Member Profile

No, not intolerant, just a passing observation. The key word I used being "seems", and I was talking about your entire body of work over the past 15 years. I apologize if my broad stroke comment upset you, but my comment was based on my perspective over that time. I should've been more specific when I said "a positive" comment. What I meant was a positive comment about our program. I just don't remember you posting much during the 2015-2018 run, and hence my perspective on your negativity.

So to you, it "seems" (for some reason not supported by facts or data) that my entire body of work has been negative even though you can easily look it up (going back several years, including the 2015-2018 run) and you can see that's not true. It's just your perception.
But even if your perception had been correct (or is in YOUR PERCEPTION), IMHO, civil adults discuss the topic (in this case nepotism) rather than posting ad hominem tangents.

OK, I'll play along.
A dedicated PWO receiver will never leave via the portal or feign illness if he gets in a huff.
There is a strong chance the the 'D-1 caliber' receiver about whom you fantasize would have already hit the portal (as seems to be the case these days with end of the bencher 'D-1 caliber' receivers).
It's not as if Clemson hadn't tried to recruit the HIGH END 'D-1 caliber' receiver like an Andre Green or the in the first place. If you actually believe that Clemson didn't try to recruit such a player so that we would instead make room for a PWO receiver, then you're just not very good at thinking.
Since we didn't get a high end receiver, then signing a ho hum 'D-1 caliber' receiver instead would have likely led to an end-of-the-bench type player ... i.e., a player who thought he was too good to sit on Clemson's bench ... that guy would have a high probability of developing a bad attitude and then hitting the portal. If he didn't hit the portal, do you think he would have been happy just being a holder on FGs and PATs? No way that you trust the holder job to a guy who doesn't want that job.
It is much much better to have a receiver that knows how and where to run routes, doesn't jump offside, at least gets in the way of defenders when called upon to block, and most importantly is valuable on what is arguably the least desirable job on special teams ... the holder.
It is not good to have a back-of-the-bencher 'D1 caliber' guy who gets a bad attitude for not playing until emergency situations arise.
You're welcome.

By a MASSIVE coincidence, the 3 Swinney boys just happen to be the best available athletes who would accept a scholarship and stay with the team, right? It has NOTHING to do with nepotism. Just a MASSSIVE coincidence. Best is the standard. Pure meritocracy. Right?
We all know better. But coach-worshippers seem to make excuses for nepotism that they would denounce in any other environment.

It's sad that you resort to puerile insults and silly speculation about me, as if that's a civil, intelligent, adult way to respond. Special teams guys get scholarships all the time ... at every program. And he’s more than earned that scholarship over the years.
We *did not* fail to sign a quality WR in deference to giving a scholarship Will Swinney.

Mac Jones was Bama's holder before becoming starting QB
Feb 8, 2022, 1:32 AM
|
|
So you see... It's not a requirement to put a short, slow, mediocre-athlete walk-on at holder. It's more common to put a good athlete with a good wingspan (typically a QB) at holder so that he can catch errant snaps and execute a fake-kick pass or run if needed. (Yes, Will had a short, lumbering TD run against cupcake UConn.) It's actually very rare, if not unprecedented, to put a short, slow, mediocre-athlete walk-on at holder, let alone the head coach's kid. I'm sure that it had nothing to do with nepotism. Pure coincidence. There wasn't a better athlete in the country who would have accepted a Clemson scholarship, who would have done just as well as a holder, who could have been a passing/running threat at holder, and who could have done a better job as a WR. Right? Pure meritocracy. Best is the standard.
It's common to put some walk-ons on scholarship (O, D, or ST). But it's also common to put the best available athletes on scholarship, not the short, slow, mediocre coach's kid.

I wrote: It sure was great that Clemson gave a schollie to Will Swinney instead of a D-1 caliber wide receiver.
Will Swinney is a 0-star, short, slow walk-on. Obviously there were hundreds of 2-star and 3-star (i.e. D-1 caliber) superior athletes who would have been thrilled to take a scholarship from Clemson, but Dabo used up one of his precious scholarships on his son. Are you saying there were no such D-1 caliber athletes (or anybody athletically superior to Will Swinney) that would have accepted an offer from Clemson?
I think we both know better. Just look at the rosters of superior athletes at lesser D-1 schools (like Coastal Carolina, GT, etc.) that we didn't offer! https://247sports.com/college/coastal-carolina/Season/2019-Football/Commits/

You mean a superior athlete like say, Ajou Ajou?
Feb 8, 2022, 3:19 PM
|
|
Should we have just back loaded another WR like Ajou instead of Will Swinney?
What would have been the advantage (real or imagined) for our team of doing that?
The WR room was absolutely loaded while Will was occupying a scholarship (as a holder) ...
Certainly any reasonably athletic 3-star WR not getting snaps is transferring out. Ajou Ajou is a guy who perfectly fits that description. So was Mikey Dukes as a back-fill RB. Just very athletic 3-stars we offered and wasted scholarships on.
Both Ajou and Dukes provided exactly “zero” to the success of Clemson .
For me, it’s easy to argue that Will Swinney has been a better contributor than Ajou or Dukes. Especially when weighing perceived talent and athleticism. Slow, weak, un-athletic Will Swinney actually produced more on the field than super freak Ajou and strong, fast Dukes.
And I would trust neither to hold on critical FG attempts or even routine extra points. Neither would you.
So, other than having an unexpected rash of injuries among WR Corp thrusting Will Swinney into a starting role, what negative impact has Will Swinney’s scholarship caused?

More puerile ad hominem attacks. How mature & brilliant!

You didn't answer whether or not you graduated Clemson or with what degree.
I don't donate to this board, in part, because they make advertising dollars, in part because I don't post here that often, which is in large part because they allows posters like you to insult the other posters, rather than engaging in civil, intelligent, adult discussion about a topic. I spend more time posting on STS where insulting the other posters is forbidden, and people like you get banned for repeatedly insulting the other posters rather than engaging in civil, adult discussion.

Re: This seems like a poor excuse to justify Dabo's nepotism.

You'll never find me as a special teams apologist, but holder IS a bit of a critical position, just as is long-snapper. Will Swinney holds some responsibility for many points scored in the last 4 years that could have swung games away from us. As a receiver, sure, a bit of a liability. BUT...we all said the same about Jeff Scott, and in the long run he became a pretty darn good coach and brought many of our stud players to us. "Nepotism" worked well there. I'm assuming the "D-1 caliber wide receiver" you mentioned is Derion Kendrick. Nearly every other school that offered him wanted him to switch to CB immediately. His family (I taught his younger brother and coached a cousin in softball) said FSU was the front-runner for him until they told him that they were only considering him as a DB. We gave him the shot at WR, but had deeper needs in the secondary and looked to his future. D1 receiver, but NFL corner. I'd say that worked out pretty well for him AND for us until he struggled making mature decisions. Lets be real; college football recruiting is all about connections. Teams all the time are "keeping pipelines open" to schools by offering a 3-star so that the school's next 5-star remembers it. Sounds like Clay has those connections and is parlaying them into other, stronger players (read, Randall). It happens everywhere, just most of the big-name coaches these days are either too old to have their kids on their team (Saban) or too young, so you don't hear about it as much. Just my thoughts.

He will be the next Sammy Watkins or Dexter Lawrence by the time he leaves here.

He'll start both ways, as a Dexter-like DL & Watkins-like WR

Actually, among the Swinney boys, he looks like he might be the only serviceable D1 WR.

I hope most get this. It is a tremendous asset to have a coach's son part of the team. Great in the locker room as they say.
