I believe the reason for that, oddly enough, is because this playoff structure was set up to benefit the SEC and Big Ten conferences getting multiple schools in the tournament. The argument justifying that, his band that if conferences from those schools have two or three losses they should get in ahead of teams with better records, due to the claim that they have to play so many tough games within the conference. Clemson scheduled to sec teams as out of conference games this year. If Clemson gets punished for playing to SEC schools, then that sort of contradicts the justification for letting SEC schools with more losses into the tournament. So to keep that consistent, I think that's why you're seeing a lot of people projected committee would give Clemson the benefit of the doubt over a big 12 school, based on that reason.
