Recently, ND’s AD suggested they play Clemson more frequently in football. This is clearly an attempt to increase their slumping viewership. The dip in National Championship ratings proved that ND and Ohio State aren’t the draws they once were, and they are scrambling to change the trend. Does Clemson really need to take the hit by playing less popular programs? I expect OSU to reach out to more popular ACC/SEC schools in an effort to increase ratings as well. Another thing both teams could do is have more exciting entrances, more pageantry, and more exciting storylines. I know one of the things the networks love is broadcasting the busses at Clemson, The Hill and Howard’s Rock. Maybe ND and OSU could create some traditions like these, or maybe have more fireworks or a cannon.

Notre Dame vs OSU had 22.1 million viewers

the third lowest in the playoff era and a 12% drop from 2024.
To put that into perspective, no Clemson NC game had fewer than 25.1 million, and we’ve had as many as 26.7 million.
It’s just math.

You are absolutely correct re. Why ND wants to play Clemson every year. It boosts their slumping tv ratings and they will slump even more when the SEC AND BIG quit scheduling them. ND needs the ratings to get better for their tv contact renewal when it comes up for renewal.
Notre Dame contributes nothing to any conference while using them to boost their tv contract revenue. Screw them. Clemson should NOT play them.

The last Clemson NC was in 2019. Since then, college football viewership has plummeted. You can't compare apples with oranges. Notre Dame is far more popular than we are. Look at our ratings during the regular season. Notre Dame still has the second largest fanbase in the country. Ohio State is #1. This is just a really stupid take.
That said, I agree with the base premise. There is no advantage to playing ND any more. You either win the ACC, or you have to be ranked high. Risking OOC losses is dumb.

which was proven with losses to a directional school in Illinois (no legit football program loses to a school in Illinois, they don’t know ball in that state), and Ohio State who didn’t even qualify for their conference championship game.
As for adding excitement to the experience there, one idea I had was to shoot fireworks from Touchdown Jesus during their entrance and every time they score. I think the TV viewers would really get a kick out of that.
Ohio State needs a complete overhaul. Their favorite tradition is dotting the i in Ohio, which is just the band…it has nothing to do with football. I think they’d be better served by having their football players run out and spell Ohio instead, and then pick a “fan of the game” to dot the i. It would add excitement to people who pay to sit through those crap games in person, and for the TV audience it would create drama every week to see if the football players can spell Ohio correctly or not.
I’m just thinking out loud here.

According to your logic Ohio State (who I freaking hate with a passion) was a worse team than Jacksonville State. So Yes...given that both of them made it to the CFP final. One of them convincingly. Or did I miss something? Are you saying winning the Big10 or the ACC is a bigger deal than winning the CFP? If so maybe we should just opt out of the CFP and call the ACC championship good enough, because it the pinnacle of greatness. I mean common, we are all proud of our ACC championship, but what we really brag about is our national titles because that is the one title that actually means something.

Not Ohio Valley or Conference USA, or whatever.
Regarding winning the NC, Clemson and SMU had to play an additional playoff game that ND and OSU did not. The asterisk is already there, it’s not coming off.

You know what is F______g scary? SC averages more viewers per game than we do now. It really is a strength of schedule thing....There's likely no fixing that unless the entire ACC gets better.

Instead of playing football by the traditional rules, we could play a banana ball style game. This would certainly up the ratings.

Notre Dame is like the selfish princess, no matter how much you give the selfish princess, she is dissatisfied, offended and in desperate need of more.
I’m against feeding that bottomless pit of need. I’d banish her to Elba to lord over the mosquitos and crabs.

of traditional blue bloods with big alumni bases, the more the casual fan shrugs. It feels contrived and forced. Ohio State vs. Notre Dame should have been...by ESPN's line of thinking...ratings gold. But they just overwhelm you with it and on top of that, it fits in nicely with the idea that only ultra-ultra rich programs will be able to fund a team and roster to make it to the championship, which makes the sport less interesting to some.

I think Ohio State had the 2nd highest average viewers of any team in the regular season. Every playoff round Ohio State had the highest rated game. The NC just didn’t do it for people. I get it.

You make some valid points. But Ocryo St won’t be reaching out to more popular ACC/SEC teams to play more games because they will continue to play the softest non-conference schedule in the country. If they played any decent non conference teams they would never make the playoffs.

My conclusion:
Notra Dame is in Indiana. And so is Indiana. And Indiana is a basketball school. Therefore, Notra Dame is a basketball school.
And as you suggest, football schools that play basketball schools in football tend to lose in the ratings. Ohio State being the latest, most obvious example.
As for creating more of a spectacle at ND or Ohio State games, I have to disagree. Running those 4K cameras back and forth over all those beer-drunk pale clinically depressed people is spectacle enough.
Proud to be the 35th TU on the OP.
