Brad is not going to be fired this year...

5

Mar 1, 2023, 4:46 PM

...regardless of if we make the NCAA tournament or not. Clemson is not going to fire a 21+ win Coach for basketball.

Nor should he be fired this year in my opinion. We should very well be at 23-24 wins right now but 21 is pretty incredible considering we were predicted to finish 11th in the conference this year.

Just my opinion.

I think the fact that we 'should' be at more wins and those

losses out there are costing (likely at this point) the team the NCAAs is the very reason to give impetus to say enough is enough.

But, he is right. CBB is here to stay…

I don’t think he gets “fired” but I think he will resign and take another job somewhere.

In fact I would bet he has people frantically lining up other job offers as we speak.

I agree he won't be fired and I think he is probably ready to move on and he may have a few options. But you are delusional if you think people are "frantically lining up" for a coach to take them to mediocrity.

Anything is possible, but I don't see him looking to leave

Mar 2, 2023, 6:20 AM

what's the reasoning for that at this point? He likely gets an extension. The only reason he'd consider leaving would be if his buyout is not raised, which I think is the way the admin should approach things, but who knows what they'll do. And we can realistically still make the tourney.

Next year, I'd say there is a decent chance Chase Hunter takes his Covid year, and a very good chance Hemenway returns. PJ will be back in all likelihood. That's a good nucleus. All of the 4 freshmen have had their moments and all have promise. Shieffelin and Middlebrooks will be back. Someone could transfer, but I don't see anyone who is strongly leaning towards that. And we'll likely bring in a transfer of our own.

The ACC is in a major transition period, not just with conference realignment, but with current programs. Dook and the holes are not dominant now. Boeheim is faltering. Hamilton appears to be doing the same at FSU. Larranaga won't coach much longer. Tech will have a new coach. Louisville is a disaster. State and Pitt improved this year but can they sustain it? UVA is really the only program with very sound footing. At least as far as basketball goes, there has never been a better opportunity for Clemson to up it's standing in the league. Brad'd not blind, he can see that

His reasoning would be pressure to leave or be fired. Let’s face it. Everyone under the sun knows it’s time for the program to move in a different direction. I feel our new AD will pressure Brownell to leave while his stock is high vs brownell it next year and get fired. It’s his choice but the logical move for him is to leverage his good year a swindle some other program. Otherwise he will be in a much worse position next year or the year after when he blows it again and finishes in bottom third of ACC.

He needs to strike while the iron is hot

It all depends on what Neff and the board's expectations

6

Mar 1, 2023, 6:07 PM

are, and what they want for Clemson basketball going forward. If they want more of Brad Brownell and his 13 year legacy, including a 21-win, no tourney 2023, they will keep him. If they want a chance at being better than that, they will move in another direction.

I'm ok with a push.

Just don't give him a contract extension.

and if he legitimately wants to explore other jobs I'm fine with that, too.

If he could sustain this level of success, meaning we are in contention for NCAA every year I'm fine with that level of success.

If this is the pinnacle and they go back to .500 play next year then he needs to go.

If he hadn't lost to Loyola-Chicago and Louisville, we'd be sitting pretty, clinched a top 4 double-bye in the ACCT and a shoo-in for the NCAAT. On top of a historic season in terms of ACC wins.

But he did lose to those NET 250+ teams (300+ for Louisville...who'd have thunk that LSV could be below Loyola-Chicago?). Not one, but twice.

Thos two games alone warrant a discharge.

If CBB leaves

2

Mar 1, 2023, 10:37 PM

it is because of t$%# Clemson fans who have shown him zero respect and do nothing but criticize everything he does. You cannot fire a coach who produced 20 plus wins and a top four finish in the ACC. Considering the history of Clemson basketball that would be sheer stupidity.

What’s it say when 20+ wins doesn’t get us in the tournament? It says we played a weak schedule. I sure hope Neff doesn’t think like you. It’s time for change. 13 years is long enough to know he’s never going to take us to that next level of making the tournament consistently.

After 13 years, being in the top 4 of a horrid ACC league season once- is something we should appreciate but not make Brad something he is not. Brad has had his chance - time for someone else to try.

Making the tournament was the established standard at the beginning of the year. If he doesn’t make it he should be gone.

We were a consistent tourney team when he got here. The Clemson brand has improved dramatically since then. He shouldn’t be retained simply because he’s slightly better than coaches before color tv.

I’ve actually been told by friends close to the athletic department the decision had already been made, he’s being fired unless he makes the NCAA tournament and that we’ve already made contact with Chris Beards people to gauge interest. This came getting a guy that actually doesn’t want him fired, not sure how much truth to any of it but he’s been a reliable source on all things Clemson for me for 15 years, heck he told me about the Garrett Riley hire about an hour before the news first broke or rumored by anyone. We’ll see.

I’m looking at this as what have you accomplished in your 10+years. If he had taken his teams to the final 68 more often and won a few more games in the tourney then we would not even be talking about a possible departure.

ACC wins and total wins are great but at the end of the day how many times were we put in a position to win it all.

People argue it has always been like this and I say well find a coach that can break through the same ole same ole.

Brad is 21-9 and likely 22-9 after Saturday. He's more likely to get a raise than to get fired this year. Now next year probably does him in as he loses Tyson and Galloway and no one on his bench can score/ shoot and provide offense like them.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe not - but he should move on.

3

Mar 2, 2023, 8:26 AM

After 13 seasons, we should simply be analyzing the “set” of data (13 years) - not just this year where a piece of our success is due to the horrid strength of the ACC.
We cannot be prisoners of the moment - we should look at the entire 13 years.
Has Brad built a program? No
Has Brad succeeded in recruiting stronger athletes? No
Has Brad moved away from mid major - shoot 3s and hope they go in ball? No
Has Brad developed big men at all? No. PJ is a gift and Brad does not drive the ball into him.
Had Brad turned a corner and suddenly become the coach who will take Clemson to ACC tournament championships and expect ncaa dance invites more than 50%? No

So, why should a single season of wins against the worst ACC group (the ACC is ranked 7th in strength- 7th omg) give him more time? We know after 13 years what he can and cannot do. To pretend otherwise is simply “wishing” or burying your head in the sand. Do you really believe that if Brad stays - that results will be different?

I like the team this year. Love how Tyson has developed and really enjoy PJ and his game. Others too. But there is nothing that tells me Brad has changed and moved the program forward. Simply a good win loss record. This win loss record does not hold water for the ncaa committee or we would not be outside the invite list hoping for a miracle. If we had this record in the early 80s - we would ranked in top 10. My opinion - yours may vary. Be safe and well.
