Is Deion Sanders the Anti-Dabo?
Dec 8, 2022, 12:30 PM
|
|
Without judgment, his approach to his job appears to be 180 degrees from Dabo.
I doubt (but correct me if I'm wrong) that we will ever hear Sanders tout his team's graduation rates or speak to developing players into men (beyond the concept that "men play football") or good citizens. I recall the J State video where he and his coaches are selling their program, and academics or overall development don't enter the discussion. "We want ballers" was basically the gist of it. In his first speech to his new team he tells them that they'd better get ready because if they don't perform, his own players from J State are coming. I highly doubt Deion questions paying players...I would assume he wonders what took so long. Obviously he's going to go full mercenary and get whomever he can from the transfer portal. There is no "loyalty" in his program...just winning. Again, I'm not saying that out of judgment (I clearly know which of the two philosophies I support but this isn't about that)...it will be interesting to see where this goes over the next five or six years.

Actually he has tbe tools and the common sense to utilize them. Tbe NCAA has opened up everything with tbe NIL stuff. It's game on. Schools that refuse to maximize the potential will eventually get passed by tbe others. A school like Colorado needs 1 10 win season and some cash. Our culture has been defined as ole school. That works to an extent. A coach like Deion Sanders can and will thrive in this system of limited restrictions. Either we get in it with him or suffer the consequences.

Going scorched earth on everyone and treating players as nothing more than tools for his own success won't build much of a lasting culture. He clearly is there for short-term success and then moving on to bigger and better things for himself. Deion has always been a "ME" guy and that hasn't changed.
Is it a coincidence that his 2-word nickname, "Prime Time" both ends in "ME"?

He walked in a room full of players with hoodies, phones out, dressed like slouches. They needed blowed out. Had they been sitting there, not slouching and sliding out of seats, and had they been wearing suits and ties; it would have been a different meeting.

I think you're way off on Deion.

Like Dabo, he's outspoken about his Christian faith. He isn't ashamed to tell people about it. Although his story is very different from Dabo's, it is very powerful in that he had it all and then hit rock bottom, to the point of being suicidal. That's when he found Jesus and turned his life around.
Yes, he's flashy, but that's his personality. It's unfair when people criticize that for being an act. You could just as easily say that Dabo's personality is an act. I don't think it is - I think Dabo is genuine - but Dabo is enough of a marketer to realize that his public persona needs to be carefully crafted. I view Deion the same way.
Today, branding is what it's all about. Dabo has created a brand around himself. Some people love it, some people can't stand it. Deion is the same way in terms of branding.
Deion has a lot going for him:
-He's been a professional athlete in two major sports. -He's had tons of endorsement deals. -He has won championships. -He has made lots of money. -He is African-American.
This is super important for recruiting.
Now, he can also add successful college football coach to his resume.
I don't think it's fair that he is being portrayed as disloyal for leaving Jackson State. He never promised to be there forever. It was a mutually beneficial relationship. Jackson State got a significant turnaround in their football program and tons of publicity. Deion got to establish himself as a football coach who can recruit well and win. He's sending half of his salary at Colorado to Jackson State for new facilities. How many football coaches have donated millions of their own dollars to another school? That's really cool.
Parents will like his approach, with a focus on hard work and character. I am confident he will teach these boys to become responsible and polite men. I think you'll see good things from them academically too. To portray Deion as all flash with a 100% focus on football, and no regard for character or academics, is unfair. What is that based on?

I didn't know anything about Deion's Christianity, and maybe some time I'll look at that. I wasn't really talking about that unless you mean that he'll try to instill Christian values in his players. If you think that, have you seen that at J State? I hadn't but I'm not monitoring it.
I didn't say his personality was an act, nor did I judge him for being flashy. I said that it was a judgment free post two times. I didn't criticize his personality.
Branding...fine...whatever...call it what you want...I'm saying they are 180 degrees from each other.
Deion has a lot going for him - again, this wasn't something I disagreed with. It could even be thrown into my argument as to Sanders being 180 degrees from Dabo - Dabo never played in the NFL, wasn't a great player, and came to football after a brief stint in commercial real estate. Sanders is a multi-decade household name and NFL royalty.
I didn't say anything about being disloyal for leaving J State and honestly have not really seen that (I mean, you can ALWAYS find someone who says that but by and large, that's not a hit I'm hearing).
Parents will like his approach? We shall see. That's part of the "Interesting how this will go over then next 5-6 years" thing. I imagine some will and some won't. Some players will and some won't. The point is that it's completely different from Dabo's approach.
"To portray Deion as all flash with a 100% focus on football, and no regard for character or academics, is unfair. What is that based on?"
I didn't call him all flash...man you look to fight wherever you can. I say he has a 100% focus on football based on what I have heard him say, both to his players in Colorado and in the "sales-pitch" video he and his coaches did at J State. I'm happy to be wrong if you have some instances where he expressed concern for his players academics...took disciplinary action for a team rule or academic reason...touted his players' grades...I mean, if it's out there, I have no issue admitting I didn't do a thorough research project to start a conversation on Tigernet.

I think one could argue that he referenced both the bible and academics there, but really...just in the terms of playing better. The biblical reference was to support the idea that if you love the game, you need to work hard. Not at all a bad message but it's obviously in support of his team winning games. And his academic message was good in that he points out that most won't go pro, but it's still "Hey...stay eligible." That's not really the pro-academic mindset I'm thinking of.
Still, it was an interesting video and did show me more of Sanders's approach, so I do appreciate it.

and he opened up in a more humbling way during a few interviews I saw...one was 60 minutes, not sure on the other.
I also agree its unfair to say he doesn't care about academics and character...The word character is in his 4 word mantra on expectations of a player. You could say its a cornerstone.
His approach comes off alot different than most, bc he is. The flash turns off alot of people but he is very serious about what he's doing.

The fans definitely feel betrayed. A co-worker of mine is a huge JSU fan. I told him halfway through the season to “enjoy Deion while it lasts, he’s about to get some crazy money thrown at him by the likes of GT or Auburn”. His response was “no way Deion would do that, what he’s doing at JSU is about way more than money”. He was offended I even suggest it. He won’t even talk about it with me right now.
I’m not saying what he did was wrong, I’d do exactly the same thing, I’m sure. But it was definitely a betrayal.

BS. Do an ounce of research. His BS story of finding Christ in 1997 didn't stop him from being a horrible person. He divorced his wife immediately after for what was allegedly his mistress, since then, he has been accused of infidelity and domestic abuse (including being charged for assaulting his second wife). He has also been fired from a high school he founded for assaulting an administrator who voiced concerns about the low grades of his athletes (his son also sent a man to a hospital). Not to mention that school was shut down by the state of Texas for not meeting educational standards. There are dozens of similar stories about him. Just saying you're now Christian doesn't mean anything if you don't live your life that way (and for those posters who try to minimize his behavior by saying its only because he's in the public spotlight, if you do the same things, you're a bad person. Period.).
He might well be a successful coach. College football is now about instant gratification and its only a route for fame and fortune (there's no such thing as a "student-athlete" at elite football programs). As you say, he knows how to promote himself and is very good at that.
But to say he's way off just shows you haven't done your research (and any good parent would not have any faith in him).

EXCELLENT points JK! I agree. Also, much of Coach Sander’s disdain is derived from the days of “Neon Deion” (a nickname he didn’t like). However, he evidently has evolved from tbling wearing arrogance to a driven coach with a mission. He will definitely upgrade the talent at Colorado for all those reasons you mentioned. The only risk I see is if his style conflicts with the community and boosters. Winning goes a long way toward overlooking such differences.

I would agree with most everything you say but not yet a successful college football coach. I think he’ll still be waiting for that years down the road because Jackson State is nobody compared to what he’ll face now. And personally, I think his circus show will fizzle quickly.

He's more of a Dabo Swinney clone, just more direct with a different background and race. Leans hard on his Christian faith and often incorporates the bible in talks with his players. If you didn't know this there are plenty of videos on YouTube. Constantly talks about turning his players into better men, and the value of education. Stern with his players regarding their appearance, and how they carry themselves around campus. He's more like Dabo Swinney than any other coach out there.

Everyone in college football should be very humbled that Deon didn’t get the Florida State job. I believe he will be competing for a national championship with in 3 years. If he was to get the Florida State job it would have been no chance for anyone. Hate yo say it he’s coming and when he moves on to Florida State it’s going to be a problem.

Not to be repetitive to what Judge Keller said - and he nailed it - Prime's more like Dabo than not like Dabo.
And I expect he'll make an immediate and positive impact on that long-suffering CU program. Because Prime's always made an immediate and positve impact on things.
Some didnt like his flash (including me) and mouth in the day but he won. And in the end, it's a game with a scoreboard and winning was and still is the point.

You are just looking to take a shot at liberals and make it political. Deion is very conservative in a lot of ways. Some of the things you all claim you love, hard-nosed, holding kids accountable, doesn't care about participation award approach to coaching, etc. He's just too loud and black and brand concious for a lot of you.

Deion is business. He is taking over a disaster. If he does not make drastic changes very quickly, he will fail.
