Is anyone concerned that there have been recent conference

Dec 5, 2012, 5:00 PM

move whispers regarding GT (to Big 10), FSU (to Big 12), and VT (to SEC) but, nothing about Clemson? I'm one who believes in the adage: "Where there's smoke, there's fire". I find it hard to imagine that we would stay behind, while other football-first schools abandon ship. But, then again, we didn't leave the ACC in the early 70s with the Gamecocks. Maybe it's in our DNA to tough it out. I realize that the Big 12 is not ideal due to long road trips. But more and more I see the Big 12, Big 10, PAC and the SEC referred to as "the Big 4". I just think it would be a mistake for Clemson to not move out of the ACC, if offered.

I think "Where there's smoke, there's fire" has lost much of

Dec 5, 2012, 5:07 PM

it's swagger. You now have people reporting that "according to WarChant.com...." blah, blah, blah.

Anyone with a blog or a Twitter account can blow smoke now. It doesn't mean there's a good chance there's a fire anymore.

I am not a teaser nor a liar, but I do see that the TU I punched for him has not been recorded. I tried to re-punch it, and it still would not give the TU. Must be Gremlins.

Dec 5, 2012, 5:08 PM

I'm sure the new AD is working to put out as many fires and squelch as many rumors as possible so Barker can keep us close to Swoff because we all know Swoff is looking out for Clemson. (sarcasm)

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-74tiger.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What concerns me is the folks who think everything is going

Dec 5, 2012, 5:08 PM

to be o'aky if FSU leaves (or GT or VT). The TRUTH is there is no one in the South or the East coast to replace them unless you raid the SEC or Big 12 (WVU). And we know that ain't happening.

The money gap, the TV exposure, and the conference perception (strong or weak) are all tied up with staying or going. It would be a institution altering mistake if Clemson got left behind.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If Clemson gets left behind....

Dec 5, 2012, 5:18 PM

Clemson will have no one to blame but itself for not being proactive.

At some point the administration has to realize that it's time to stop making decision based on what is in the best interest of the ACC and start making decisions based on what is in the best interest of Clemson University.

I would surely hate looking at our stadium on Saturdays during FB season. DV would look like a ghost town from like of interest in small town small Football. With nobody to blame but the pres and B O T's.

I think a lot of the rumors are fueled by WV ACC haters...

Dec 5, 2012, 5:20 PM

They've had trolls attack various boards to spread rumors. They've had bloggers make up stuff. And it's creating almost a panic and self-fulfilling "run on the bank" feeling among some fans.

I think everyone needs to calm down, because these rumors are just rumors, and very few people know what's going on. So, when you see a cryptic remark show up on a board, take it with a grain of salt.

I'll admit that losing Maryland was a punch in the gut. It's my own personal opinion that the next school to leave, if anyone at all leaves, is FSU. But I have no insider information. My thinking is that they voted against the 50MM exit fee for a concrete reason. But that's just my opinion and nothing else.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I suspect FSU among others....

Dec 5, 2012, 5:27 PM

are closely monitoring the lawsuits over the punitive buyout clauses by Maryland and Rutgers.

I get the impression that FSU is frustrated with the ACC and has lost all confidence in Swofford's ability to lead this conference (and justifiably so IMO). Consequently, I suspect they will bolt if they can find a way to eliminate or at least significantly reduce the exit fee.

Re: I suspect FSU among others....

Dec 6, 2012, 8:52 AM

Its like they are saying now, we should have left before the vote. But seriously, who would have ever thought that sensible thinking people would have ever voted yes for such an absurd amount for a buy out. Surely FSU didn't.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There are definitely some WV ACC haters around.....

Dec 5, 2012, 5:30 PM [ in reply to I think a lot of the rumors are fueled by WV ACC haters... ]

and the dude is their leader....

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think the WV people hate being on an island in the Big 12

Dec 5, 2012, 5:37 PM

by themselves. It would be to their advantage to have some eastern teams with them. I don't think it's so much hating the ACC as it is that they want company.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think there is some good old fashioned hate going on.....

Dec 5, 2012, 5:39 PM

they were snubbed for sure.... but the true colors have come out.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Punch in the gut? More like massive relief. It's like

Dec 5, 2012, 6:13 PM [ in reply to I think a lot of the rumors are fueled by WV ACC haters... ]

the last time my Audi was stolen. I watched the guy driving away and the only thing I could think was, "Well, thank god that some other poor son of a ___ has to deal with the car payments and lengthy shop time now." I tracked the guy down with the car's OnStar system. He looked surprised when I knocked on the door. "You'll need these," I said to him, handing him the payment-coupon book.

All right, no that never really happened. But it has at least as much basis in reality as the folks who are worried about us losing the massive floater known as Maryland athletics.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I understand that Maryland wasn't no prize or anything...

Dec 5, 2012, 10:47 PM

The "punch in the gut" is knowing that ANY Program is willing to leave your conference. It's not Maryland that I'm worried about. I'm worried about everyone else now, and Maryland leaving was a warning that the ACC needs to get its act together.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why did we vote to approve a $50 million penalty while MD

Dec 5, 2012, 5:34 PM

and FSU voted against? WTH? If you think we are hurt recruiting against the SEC now, just wait if we are in the ACC without FSU, GT and VT. The recruiting pitch by rival schools against Clemson, will be vicious.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

FSU is gone for sure, Md must have been thinking about it

Dec 5, 2012, 5:38 PM

too. Our leadership is about how it always has been. CHARTER MEMBER!

If there was even a remote possibility....

Dec 5, 2012, 5:43 PM [ in reply to Why did we vote to approve a $50 million penalty while MD ]

that we were considering other options as it pertains to conference affiliation, this vote was rediculously foolish and unjustifiable and supports what I have been saying all along; Clemson absolutely does not want to leave the ACC unless forced to do so.

For practical purposes, even if Clemson had voted against it, the non-football schools who rely heavily on the revenue generated by the football schools would have banned together to insure this punitive exit penalty got passed.

There has been smoke for over a year regarding Clemson and FSU. Only fire I have seen was Maryland.
