Iowa has 21 OL on roster with 3 over 300lbs

Iowa's OL three heaviest players are 301, 302 and 308. They average 6'-4 to 6'-6, with a couple 6'-3 and several 6'-7. The average weight is in the 285-290 range.

That said their OL players tend to be couple inches taller and 20lbs lighter on average. Why is it they look bigger than our guys? Does that mean extra height and less weight makes them more athletic on average or give them more stamina. I swear their arms look bigger but maybe because they don't carry the larger bellies.

Does Dabo and Caldwell think we need a 320lb OL because we go against bigger DL than the midwest? Are we hurting ourselves by putting extra weight on our guys? I remember when Morris came to Clemson the first thing he wanted to do was trim the fat off the OL and build stamina so they could be more mobile and play 80 plays a game. It is obvious that philosophy has not remained with the offensive gameplan.

Watching the Iowa game tonight, it just looked like their OL was substantially better than ours? Maybe it was because they were playing Maryland but they were 4-0 also.

Just wondered how Iowa compared as they looked pretty decent tonight and ranked 5th.

You missed a key point…….and you actually mentioned it in your title. They have 21 OL on their roster…. much more than us.

It’s such a hard position to project and to recruit for, you really need more numbers particularly when you play 14 to 15 game seasons. Look how many Bama and Georgia carry. Roster Management.

We have 21 but can't seem to find 5 that can play. Remember reading an article 3 years ago that the NFL oline strategy had changed and they were going after lighter, more nimble oline that could move and change direction quicker.

All good points you've made. Iowa, imho looks like we did in 2014/15 but that's based off a very small 4 games over 2 years sample. Definitely pulling for Iowa to win the B1G this year.

Another note - Mich St picked up a great commit on the 22 cycle with an athelete. Listed as ALL purpose. Sure wish we'd offered him. He's built for the slot. 4* but had offers from the big schools.

That’s correct, counting the walk ons, we also have 21. I suspect the Iowa number also includes walk ons. Iowa almost always has a good offensive line, and that’s the case with many other Midwest schools. I’ve long thought we should devote more effort on recruiting that area for linemen.

I would be interested in knowing who's OL philosophy we are using. Is it what the OC TE wants, or is this the body type Caldwell likes, or combo?

I just keep thinking about Morris wanting lighter and more agile OL. Then you look at who I consider our best O-Linemen Parks, and he is more of the Iowa mold of 6'5 and 295. Lots of our guys are 6'3 and 300+.

Whatever the case, our OL better gel soon or the year is going to be really long.
