"real" it may be. But I've always thought that when the chips fall, the wealthy will bail en masse, and then leverage their dollars in safer, cheaper countries. The same way immigrants come to the US to work, earn dollars, then wire those back home to leverage for better lives for their families, the wealthy will do much the same, leaving the country and leveraging those same dollars overseas.

I'm not even 50yo, hardly wealthy by American standards, but the wife and I could comfortably retire in several countries around the world tomorrow. I have a good friend who made millions in residential construction in the early 2000's, only to lose it all in the housing/financial crisis. He sold everything and moved to Mexico where he's retired, and dabbles selling real estate in Merida. He's been there since around 2010.

That 53% seems absurdly high.

At the same time, we researched the Portugal golden option a few years ago. I suspect we’ll live overseas for a few years when kids depart for college, but not planning it full time.
