Greer vs Riverside, 2 schools separated by about 15 minutes, will play in Florence. over 2 and a half hours away from either school.

I agree that’s so dumb. Can’t get good educators better pay but we can bus 2 basketball schools halfway across the state to play a basketball game.

I understand that Riverside’s and Westsides girls will do the same. Wouldn’t Florence be considered to be the low country. This is insane!!

My guess is there’s logistics that have to be set in place for state championships that need to be put in place more than 5 days before the game. I’m sure a certain number of hotel rooms have to be available that need to be guaranteed . Seems as if the issue may be they totally screwed up the brackets by not having true north brackets vs south brackets.

Florence will be the home to Lower State Championships.
Per the SCHSL, the Upper State will be played at Bob Jones.

I played in a men's church basketball league championship game there...

a few years ago. Not sure how or why the game ended-up being played there, but it's a nice facility for a smaller school. Kinda reminded me a little of Littlejohn before all of the renovations with the goals suspended from the ceiling by large white v-shaped support structures. It also had a suspended running track circling the court and a swimming pool. Probably seats between 3,500 and 4,500 people. BJU also hosted the DII Volleyball National Championship games a couple of years ago.

Re: Your link is 2023. In 2024 Upper State AND Lower State are in Florence

What’s sad is that I can’t even replicate how I got there. My search was simply “schsl” and from there… who knows. My apologies.
The fact that Florence will host the Upper State, Lower State and the Finals is criminal.
Upper State should be played in the Upstate. Greenville County supplements the operating budget of Bon Secours Wellness Center. It shouldn’t be that hard to block out a weekend. And even if it is, Furman, Clemson, Wofford, USC Upstate and even Presbyterian are all better options. Hell, even Dorman is a better option.
And the State Championships should be played in Columbia - for Football as well. Between UofSC previously wanting to be financially compensated and Clemson’s interests not wanting the SCHSL to give any recruiting advantages to that group… they found a way to screw up the showcase events for the state’s high school teams.

In high school basketball around here, it matters as much WHEN you are good,

as it does how good you actually are. My little school, which no longer exists, went 27-1 two years in a row, losing only in the state finals, to Marty Woolbright (who later played tight end at USuK) and Chapin both years. We were REALLY good, several small time college players and one Clemson player on that team.
A couple of years later, we took a team not nearly as talented, and won it all. Go figure.
Coach Artie Knight, later of Orangeburg-Wilkinson fame, was the coach of those teams for us.

Holly Hill High School, Class A. It later combined with Roberts High to become Holly Hill-Roberts. Still later, THAT combined with Elloree to become Lake Marion High, which is what it is now.

The schedule was set long before the matchup was. No story here.
