IMHO the only way to fix this D quickly: Start from scratch;

Starting at practice today, EVERY starting position is up for grabs. Everyone has to earn their spot. I don't really think complacency was necessarily an issue but competition is going to be the best way to get better with what we have.

changes need to be made. We can't go with the status quo

Aub was our only decent defensive game so far. Player changes is probably the quickest fix. We can't get worse so might as well.

True...but you can't start from scratch with open competition at this point. The guys that are playing are outplaying the other guys in practice and they know the defense. It's easy for guys like us to criticize but trust me if you throw a guy out there that is lost it will get ugly very fast. Yes our guys aren't playing well right now but they do give us a chance to be in a position to win. Bottom line is the guys we do have, all of them in the secondary, are just not that good right now.

From what I've heard from Venables and Dabo it's coming

I think we'll see a bunch of young players thrown in and told to learn through a trial by fire and allow them to make mistakes. Better to have a high risk high reward player rather then high risk no reward player.

Hey DRobins...

What's your take on our D scheme? Do you think we're being to aggressive? Sometimes I think our LBs are getting to aggressive and getting eat up by the guards and tight ends. On the back side they're taking bad angles. I know BV wants them going forward and reacting whereas Steele kind of wanted them to read and flow with the play and then react. That's been my observations from watching in person and on TV.

Scheme is fine. They're just not executing

ne of the problems with going from M@M to a zone is that guys get caught covering dirt and not attacking the player that might not be in their zone. You could tell that happened at times on Saturday. The wr/rb would run in a void in the field and instead of the nearest player jumping him they waited, covering dirt because no one was in their zone, and FSU got easy completions.

The 3 man front was done because we didn't get a pass rush with 4 DL and Venables thought it's be best to rush 3, drop eight or nine and force Manuel to read zone. He did and they got yards in bunches.

This D is bad and it starts from all levels. The DL gets no push, doesn't contain the edge and can't keep OL men from pushing them out of their gaps. The LBs get caught in the sweep because of this and can't make plays. Also they are going TOO fast and taking themselves out of plays when experienced RBs cut back. The Dbs are for the most part not very good players and take horrible angels, aren't fast enough, and can't find the ball in the air.

To put it simply it's time to play the younger players and let them make their mistakes as they learn on the job. Teek and Steward would be starting for me next saturday or at least sharing significant snaps at the LB position and Blanks has to move back to Safety.

Dabo and BV have said over and over, since first game, that no position is guaranteed to any player. They are earning PT each week at practice. So, either our coaches aren't a good judge of talent, or we've got several guys who just aren't quite "there" yet. Obviously there's a lot of work to be done, we're just trying to figure how to make the best of what we have while our guys continue to learn, grow, and get better.
