After finishing the high build primer on the main body of the car and cleaning my spray gun I turned to close up shop and saw this:

Those parts are the exterior A pillar trim, the lower headlight trim and the fuel door. I'd missed them when shooting the body. They are mounted on a rack/stand I built to hang the LR replacement door which came off a green w126 body (83 MB sedan).
I guestimated 200 ml of paint would be sufficient to put four coats of HB primer on those parts. They needed it because the A-pillar trim and lower headlight trim had small nicks which rusted. The dings weren't severe but removing all the factory paint and sanding out the rust was a true trauma to the surfaces.
Here's a shot of the trim which goes below the headlights:

This stage of that trim shows they've been sanded, rust abated, and shot with two coats of 2K epoxy primer then sanded for HB primer. You can see the small fingertip sized places where the gravel struck them.
So I mixed 200 ml of HB paint by weight. It's impossible to mix by volume at that quantity and get an accurate mix. The manufacturer says it's a 4:1 ratio with 4 parts paint to 1 part activator.
Here's the math:

I did this writeup for you guize. I do this stuff without paper on a calculator now since doing this for several months.
It's pretty straight forward but don't hesitate to question the theory. I took that gallon of HB paint poured it in an empty bucket on a scale at Finishmasters, G'vegas, SC and used the weight to calculate how many grams in a milliliter of paint. Same with the activator so the basis of this is accurate. Strangely enough, it turned out to be the same as the calculations which I did using the weight of a gallon of paint. I got those off their website, I think.
Finishmasters is very kind to entertain such nonsense though I suspect the manager and a couple of the painters turned salesmen got it.
Here's the paint after tare of the cup:

Here's the activator after tare of the paint and cup:

Strange, knowing that I'd shoot these photos made me very aware of the accuracy. I usually miss the mix by at least a tenth of a gram. Fixing a mis matched batch is quite easy when you understand the basic math involved. Yes, I've fixed more than a few and wasted a significant volume of paint.
Here's the cup after shooting 4 heavy coats:

All the primer is done. I'm sanding today, Lord willing. First 320 grit, if that gets rid of the orange peel. I'll drop down to 240 grit if it doesn't then back to 320 for the next pass. After the 320 then 400 and then 600.
The concept is to sand down the orange peel then remove the scratches made by sanding down the orange peel. After ridding the world of orange peel I'll be chasing scratches made by previous sanding.
God have mercy on my soul!
Your's too.

3 analest bleachings, then analest primer (2 coats with sanding in between), then spraycoat 4 light passes for perfect analest color, then topcoat clear.

two coats base (colorcoat) and no more than 4 of clear.
I need enough clear to cut and buff. C&B means sanding (wet) with 1500 grit to remove the orange peel and chaise scratches until they are gone by sanding with 2000, 2500 and 3000 grits then buffing with using the 3M 3 compound solution to buffing black paint without having swirl marks.
Machines spray factor paint so the orange peel is slight and functions to prevent UV rays from attacking paint and destroying the chemical bond between the base and clear coats. I need enough clear left on the car to do that job without the orange peel. Frankly, I see a new car and the orange peel makes me think 'Japan in the 1960!'
I got a 9 transistor radio from Japan back in the 60s. I opened the back to see what a transistor looked like and found nine, sure enough. One was actually soldered to the board, the other 8 stuck on with glue.

The steps at my back door needed replacing. The old ones were substandard design and they were starting to deteriorate, rot.
I took a trip to Homedepot and picked up some lumber, a box of screws and a handful of lag bolts. Rather than sticking to the traditional 7 3/8" risers and considering my age, 73 in june, I build a set with risers at 4.25". That added a step but made the climb almost disappear.
Tigerfurlife, sonof, approached me with perfect and absolute truth saying that I went far past the point of diminishing returns in everything I do. Being that I don't care what he or anyone else thinks about the way I approach a task due to my adhering to personal standards rather than be gauged by others I said, 'So you're calling me ####?'
He refuted that but spoke about me considering my health and how my injured heart, physical and not emotional or spiritual, I should lighten up on myself.
'I said, so you're calling me ####! I'm telling Ms Tigerfurlife!' She loves me and I love her, of my 6 daughters she is my favorite and the only woman I could ever have lived with.
So yes, I know I'm an analisgt when it comes to this automobile along with most other things I do and have done in life. When MsTigerfur graduated college I asked her what she wanted for a graduation present and she pointed to the car I'm remodeling.
I've build the car to outlive me and if TigerFurLife® cares for it I believe it will outlive them.
So that's the story of how I've been accused of 'going overboard, on this car, why I've done it so far and why I will continue until it's finished, Lord willing.
PS: Don't tell my 5 natural daughters that my DNL is my favorite of the bunch.

I get called out on my passion for being kind and considerate. I've never worked in an industry or had adult aquatances that believe someone can keep the want of making sure nuture and love are shown everyday no matter what situations transpire. It takes people sometimes years to believe that I'm just this way. I wasn't always this way. In my mid 20s I called out for christ to put peace in my heart and let me love and show love the way I want. I was very displeased with myself and I was delivered from pathological azzholeness. God is good. I am careful what I ask God for because it is always given to me. Just not the way I think it was going to happen but it happened the way it had to happen for me to change. I praise the lord for this change and all others. Now about ur #### issues regarding the Benz. I'm scared it won't be completed because we have lost close loved ones and I could go first or you could or all of us could at the same time. If the first happens then I'm going to teach myself everything you have studied to do what you do with the Benz. I know it might take a couple years but it will love on. And yes, it will outlast me and wife. If this comes to pass, which something will, then ur dnl will be in some serious mourning and it will take a while before looking at anything that you put ur heart into doesn't destroy her mentally and emotionally. Your dnl, and u know this, has the most innocent and kindest soul anyone living has seen walk this earth. Dnl of 88 is legit the best lady to have ever graced my presence and you and wife of 88 saw her the the first time I did and both of you made the comment that she would be my wife one day. About 6 years later dnl became my wife. It's been 22 years of just marriage now and she hasn't changed one bit.
I definitely got my passion for doing the right thing from you and will honor you after your gone and lord willing u do finish the car but if he calls u hone I will finish the project exactly how u wanted it finished. Count on that.

That's the only lady I've ever met that wasn't crazy and someone told me if ibever found one that wasn't crazy then marry them. She is the most honest, sincere, loving and caring person I've ever met. I have no idea what she is doing with me. Next to getting saved,... she is the best thing to happen to me.
