Im thinking Americans need to

Have a 4 day work week. Enjoy Friday, Saturday and Sunday off. Away games we could head there on a Friday morning and enjoy the area, example Boston.

I've been working 4-10's for a few years now and couldn't imagine working fridays again. Probably the only reason I'm staying where I'm at.

Same. I work remote too. I couldn't handle 4-10s if I had to commute but being able to work from home with very Friday off is so nice.

I’ve been saying forever, that if I could go back in time and find out whoever made the weekend 2 out of 7 days, instead of 3 out of 7 days; I would have a looooong conversation with him!

Hey GUMBY, I know the answer to that one. Ties were an original invention of the devil. No question.

My dad used to say the same thing. If you wanted to hear an EPIC RANT, just bring up “ties” or say the word “fair” around my dad. We coulda been millionaires if we coulda ever gotten those rants on TV.

According to Wikipedia - Henry Ford was first to formalize large scale five days v six days and then FDR put in laws for such in many industries.

“Actual workweek lengths have been falling in the developed world. In the United States, the workweek length reduced slowly from before the Civil War to the start of the 20th century. There was a rapid reduction between 1900 and 1920, especially between 1913 and 1919, when weekly hours fell by about eight percent.[15] In 1926, Henry Ford standardized on a five-day workweek, instead of the prevalent six days, without reducing employees' pay.[16] Hours worked stabilized at about 49 per week during the 1920s, and during the Great Depression fell below 40.[15] During the Depression, President Herbert Hoover called for a reduction in work hours in lieu of layoffs. Later, President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, which established a five-day, 40-hour workweek for many workers.[16] The proportion of people working very long weeks has since risen, and the full-time employment of women has increased dramatically.[17]”

As someone who is semi retired, and has traveled to many countries. Americans work way too much. I spent the first 30 years of my career working 50 to 60 hour weeks. I feel like I’ve wasted most of my life working. Don’t let it happen to you, find a nice work balance. It goes by quick.

Europeans accuse Americans of having “no culture” regularly. Whenever they say that to me, I respond, “we have a culture of work”. Usually they then say, “that’s not culture”, to which I say, “that’s not YOUR culture, but it is a culture”.

America is the richest country in the world and it is because we have a culture of work. We have what we have because we work. I will NEVER get on board with, “I’d like to sit around and have someone else take care of me”. There are large sections of the world that think that way and they will NEVER challenge America while thinking that way.

Yeah, but when I watch barefoot kids in Central America, playing baseball with a broom stick and a wad of duct tape, and they’re all smiling and laughing, and having the time of their life. Then I come back and watch kids in the US scream and fight and cry over a video game controller and never stop warning the next new gizmo, I kind of wonder who’s better off …

The U.S. work ethic/culture is eroding fast Gumby.

The best we ever got for work hours and days was during the summer (June - August) when we could work 80 hours over 9 days (M - F then M - Th) to get every other Friday off. Half the people off one Friday and the other half the next Friday.

Of course, the off Friday could be cancelled if there was a problem that needed quick resolution.

I agree. Our work culture is eroding.

On the downside, I can’t really do anything about that.

On the upside, I’ll leave those people in the dust.
