The despotic NCAA is implementing regulations that are going to hinder athletes' ability to get scholarships. I understand that they think they're going to entice high school athletes to get their academics in order, but at the end of the day a 14 year old is the same. 14 year olds don't have the consisstent ability to realistically consider consequences 4 years down the road. I didn't. And if an 17 year old is able to do what he/she needs to do to qualify when they're a junior, they should be allowed to. What they're doing is setting up an expectation on maturity that can't exist. If the NCAA wants to do this, they should fund guidance counselors across the nation. 14 year olds can't understand regulation. This is regulation without the support to fairly implement it.

confusing article - But I am all 4 increasing academic stds

for student athletes.
Student athletes should be just that: equal parts student and athlete. Too many college athletes are not really students at all and would NEVER get accepted to a university if not for the athletic prowess. I'm not sure how to turn this around, but we have gone a long, long way for the beginning of college athletics when they really were student athletes.
I'm not saying they have to be brainiacs. But it would help if they were not at the very bottom of the academic food chain so they could blend better with other students.

without an athletic scholarship is well aware that the clock starts ticking in the ninth grade. Thousands of them are apparently mature enough to handle that.

by the time they're seniors, not juniors. If a student missed a math credit as a freshman you can take it as a senior. Not applicable under these new regulations form the NCAA.

The reason most people go to college is to get a good high paying job. Sports is a way for some people who, face it,would never be able to get as high a paying of a job as they get in the NFL.If they meet the requirements why should people ridicule them other than pure jealousy!

9th graders don't think college is a possibility

Unless they come from families that have a college background or money. College only comes into the picture when they start accomplishing things on the varsity level on the field. 10-12th grades, except for the 5 star guys.

Too much money at stake to allow the NCAA to mess with it.
