Happy Ft Bragg Day

The Fayetteville, N.C. base was originally named after the controversial Confederate general Braxton Bragg, and bore that title for a century. The Defense Department changed it to Fort Liberty in 2023 as part of a broader initiative to rename nearly a dozen military installations that had previously honored Confederate leaders.

On Monday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a memorandum changing the base's name once again, this time to Fort Roland L. Bragg.

Bragg, a private first class with the 17th Airborne Division, isn't exactly a household name. The DoD describes him as a "World War II hero who earned the Silver Star and Purple Heart for his exceptional courage during the Battle of the Bulge."

I did not realize that Balm. Hegseth figured out how to beat the liberal WOKE crowd.

I was at Ft Bragg for almost 3yrs and went to 1st grade there. This is how I ended up in SC as my father used to bring the family down to fish Santee Lakes for giant catfish and striper multiple times a year. After a bad injury on a field trial and relegated to office work, at time to re-up he declined.

This is how we ended up in SC, my dad had loved fishing Santee lakes and he had an opportunity to become a fishing guide.

So I guess my passion for fishing come by honestly.

Love that its going back to Bragg.... Always was and always will be Bragg to me. Renaming to PFC Bragg is a great solution that should keep all happy.

Spent 12 years at Bragg... lived in Pinehurst which is on the opposite side of base from Fayetteville. Sad part is that after all of my golf I played in that town, my score didn't move much. C-130s would always be flying over dropping off 82nd soldiers in the drop zones less than two miles away. When the field artillery would be firing from the range, the plates in your cupboard used to rattle.

Such a unique area of NC... there is the obvious golf vacationers, the retired community, the military community, and it also has a huge horse population of hunters, jumpers, and they even had a huge harness race every year where the big trainers from New York would come down for the winter. Each Thanksgiving, the town next to Pinehurst, Southern Pines, would have a big fox hunt at something called the "Blessing of the Hounds" where a priest would come out to pray for the hounds before the hunt. Fun, family area.

I will retire there... so much history and even better golfing. Not only Pinehurst, but Pine Needles, Mid-South, Mid-Pines, etc.... and Tobacco Road is just a half an hour north on the way to Chapel Hill on Highway 1.

I have a great picture with Dabo when the ACC held their ACC Kickoff at Pinehurst in 2010 or so. I walked right up to him and asked for a picture. Probably wouldn't have that access to him so easily now. Success does have its downsides.

Question: before this ruckus, what % of ppl knew who Braxton Bragg was?

Answer: <1%

Same with Ft. Gordon
Same with Ft. Benning
Same with Ft. Rucker

Btw, now that it's changed, let's leave Ft. Moore unchanged.

200-300 years ago the entire world participated in slavery. Blacks in this country owned slaves. You can't judge people in history by standards of today. We should be thankful that the practice ended here 150 yrs ago.
Pretty much roll my eyes at people who are offended by something that happened to their great-great-great-great grandparents, whose names they don't even know.
