Im laying it all out from my perspective

The problems are tackling, execution, and physicality.

These are fixable. I’ll tell you what, this team found its groove driving the field last night. We ran the ball very well. We just fumbled twice and missed 2 FGs.

Now..an obvious factor in all this is just that some teams in the ACC look to have actually caught up. And it’s because of our slack in recruiting.

This team will surprise people. I’m not even saying we win the ACC, but the improvements will be drastic by end of season. Remember it is Riley’s first game.

Our defense had that game in control, until the miscues started to deflate momentum.

If Cade can just start to visualize finishing off a drive and gain more experience there, things will flip. If our defense begins to be more physical, things will flip.

To be confident for FSU, I will need to have seen drives finished easily. I will need to have seen the defense flying to the ball. This team can do that. Even against the 2 teams we are playing.

And let me say one last thing. If we beat FSU and are 3-1, everything is back open for this team. That win alone can easily ignite belief.

This thing just started, and I really do believe that last night’s game was something peculiar. Like I said, this offense doesn’t look perfect, but in all honesty, I see more potential than previous 2 years.

With our schedule toughness, nothing is off the table yet. I don’t care what anybody wants to put out there.

If all you say comes true then yes! I’m just not one for false hopes

I do agree with a lot of what you said. My issue is this...

Execution on O has been an issue for three years now. We've not shown we can really improve there, so thinking we will is really just HOPE at this point. But, lets give Riley a shot.

On D, we arent physical. I fear the further away from BV we get, the less physical and aggressive we get. We missed a ton of tackles, and by upper classmen. Its not like these guys forgot how to play. It really just comes off as a lack of that killer instinct we used to have.

Are these things fixable? Yes. Do I confidence in this staff to fix them? No.

I'm actually more worried about our D than I am the O. And I know that sounds wild, but I see the O improving some, but I believe the D will regress.

We didn’t just fumble twice. Duke forced both of those fumbles.
And we didn’t just miss those FGs. Duke was abusing our line and swarming the kicker.
My point is we didn’t beat ourselves on those plays….we were beaten by our opponent.

Duke forced the Mafah fumble. The first fumble was 100% on Cade. Duke didn’t do much of anything to cause that to happen.

I was going to say.

Cade fully messed that one up, but the other was actually just a great force by the Duke player. Of course Phil should’ve apparently been clinching stronger, but the way he was holding it, it was a great angle by the Duke player.

Which Duke is a good defense who led the nation in turnover margin last year. Not wanting to give excuses, but those are facts.

Mafah carries the ball a little loosely, he is a few pounds

Sep 6, 2023, 12:40 AM [ in reply to Re: Im laying it all out from my perspective ]

overweight and was a little gassed when he got beaned on his ball arm with the ball squirting out like a bean shooter. I told my wife on the previous play that he was carrying the ball a little lackadaisical and looked winded. I said coaches need to put in shipley now before he fumbles but that maybe they were going to keep him in for his reward since he made the drive. ANd i be dang, i looked like a fortune teller on the very next play.

It was Riley's 1st game and Klubnick's 3rd

I think a bit o'patience is in order for sure. People just need to go get drunk and stay off social media for 5 days. Lord help.

Your point about Cade is true. It is only his 2nd game as a starter and 3 with significant playing time. He will get better, but the pocket presence needs some improvement. Hoping that comes with time.

I agree with alot of that but to me this offense is still missing what it has the last couple years and it’s the big play ability… the ability to strike fast. And with the clock changes I mean you saw it last night down two scores with 8 min left and it was gonna be very difficult.

You are correct there.

But against UNC last year, big plays were all over. Granted UNC’s secondary was off, but so was Syracuse when Cade came in.

The big plays is actually the biggest part of the struggle. Cade threw maybe 3 balls more than 20 yards last night. Our receivers are still not getting space. Which is why I think Grisham is one that also needs to be exchanged.

We dont have a talent problem.

2

Sep 5, 2023, 9:43 PM

At least not relative to the teams on our schedules

Look at our recruiting rankings. We are more talented than everyone we play this year, with the possible exception of FSU.

We aren’t as talented as elite programs such as Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State, but we are definitely in that next tier. To compete with them, we need to recruit slightly better than we have the last few years, and use the transfer portal to fill in gaps.

But we are way more talented than Duke and most other ACC teams we face. We shouldn’t need the portal to beat those teams, but we do because our coaching is lacking.

As I and others have been saying, Dabo has made very bad hires the last few years and we don’t develop players well or put them in positions to succeed. It’s a travesty for a once elite program to be in this situation.

Speed is not fixable

Sep 5, 2023, 10:30 PM

We're slow. Locker room speeches and aw shucks pressers don't make WR's, RB's, LB's and corners run faster. Only recruiting makes people faster.
