Badly needed negative Nancy post

Sep 14, 2017, 12:16 PM

Clemson is awesome. Dabo is amazing. Holistically speaking, I think we are the greatest football program in the history of the world. I am not complaining. I am 100% satisfied with everything about Clemson football. If we lose so Louisville, I will not lose even an ounce of satisfaction from our coaching staff.

That said... some of you guys are forgetting how razor thin our margin of error was on the way to our incredible season last year.

1. We absolutely should have lost to NC State. Don't ask me why we didn't. I was there, on the 3rd row, on the goalline of the endzone where all the drama happened. I have no idea what happened.

2. We DID lose to Pitt.

3. Louisville was in a very real position to beat us 2 of the last 3 times we played them.

4. We beat Troy by 6 points at home.

All of that stuff isn't something that I am complaining about. All of that stuff is something that happened in the same season, and it's very improbable that we still ended up in the playoffs. We made it happen, which is part of the awesomeness of that team/season. But if you play with fire often enough, you eventually get burned.

Again, I'm not complaining. I'm happy.

So what's my point?

Louisville may very well beat us and it wouldn't surprise me at all. Not because they are better, or all the hype about Lavar Burton is accurate, but because it's college football and they have one of those QBs who is sometimes unstoppable... AND we have barely survived so many times recently we are due for getting caught with our pants down. You all should be wearing the same scardy pants as I, AND you should be shaking in your combat boots. All this confidence I see around here is going to jinx us.

If we lose, I won't be mad at all. But it could happen a lot more than some of you apparently realize.

Sep 14, 2017, 12:58 PM

The thing everyone seems to forget about last year's "close call" with Louisville is that we turned the ball over 5 times! Let that sink in for a minute. Not 2 times, like last Saturday against Auburn. Not 3 times; not 4 times, but 5 stinkin' times! And yes, having given the eventual Heisman trophy winner 5 additional possessions, it was a close game. If we don't turn the ball over this Saturday night, our Tigers will defeat the dreaded red birds by at least 14 points. The Tiger Defense will smother the great offensive juggernaut. Wait and see. Go Tigers!

I am far more likely to not be worried about Clemson losing, but once I am sober from glue sniffing, I start to become worried.

By extension that is saying that sniffing glue is responsible, at least in part, for confidence in Clemson's chances.

Ironically (and I'm sure unintentionally) that is more negative than my post.

Can look back and not see where they ALMOST slipped up during a tough season. We are no exception. It takes a little luck to be crowned the champion. Hardwork and dedication often makes you a little luckier in the right times. And good coaching makes a big difference too. One play in 2015 kept us from being champion that year. We ran out of luck in Arizona !

Sep 14, 2017, 1:29 PM

But then again, it's my nature to be anxious about every game Clemson plays.

I'm not saying this again, Dabo like close games because they mature players. Had OSU not rolled over last year they wouldn't have been blown out, same for USuCk.

"You all should be wearing the same scardy pants as I, AND you should be shaking in your combat boots. All this confidence I see around here is going to jinx us."

Relatively new to the boards in my own name, but I've been using my wife's login (open the floodgates for much deserved ridicule) for years to lurk, and buy tickets at awesomely inflated prices.....

After seeing all of the confidence, I too was (am) ah-scared, but I'm pretty much that way for almost every game (maybe not Kent State). It might be attributable to being the only person in my immediate family who isn't routinely medicated for something.

Anyhow, jinxing is REAL, so it's good at least a few of us are taking proactive steps to mitigate the monster. Just so you know, I have a laundry list of superstitious things that I do for games: wear lucky shoes, shirt and hat, drink at least one (ha!) of a certain brand of bear, and have at least one shot of a certain brand of bourbon. I feel it is important to fall on my sword here - in front of all of the board members - and confess that the only game last year for which I didn't follow my superstitious routine was the Pitt game. (I was in a deer blind, in another state, but it really isn't an excuse.) So that loss was 100% my fault.

Re: Badly needed negative Nancy post

Sep 14, 2017, 2:00 PM

I get it. Any game has the element of chance. Jackson is an undeniable talent they might be unstoppable with better help. Yeah we had close ones last year. Who didn't? The bucks lost the big 10 and likely should have lost to Michigan, who in turn choked the same week we did as did Washington. Bama would have lost to Miss the third year in a row if they had not got a bunch of late turnovers. Yeah Lucyville might have won if they had found a yard, and it would not have been close if we had not given up 5 turnovers and short fields. If we had lost to State we might not have lost to Pitt and if so, Lucyville may have won the division but still had the late season swoon that disqualified them. It never stops. As the saying goes, if your aunt had cojones, she'd be your uncle. What happened happened.Lucyville is maybe the same on O, not as good on D as last year based on being torched by bad teams and we are at least as good as last year on D. If we don't cough it up, I like our chances.

"As the saying goes, if your aunt had cojones, she'd be your uncle."

This would be 100% accurate for me. My father was an only child, so no chance there. My mom had six sisters, so in all events, if one of my aunts had b@lz, then [s]he would definitely be my (only) uncle. I suspect that for some people, the saying would not necessarily hold true, as their aunts might be aunts only due to marriage, and in that case, the applicability of the saying may turn on that particular (blood-related) uncle's views, the status of the state law in question, etc.

2. See number 1
3. Louisville will not win because Muhammad Ali passed away and their weight room motivation is toast now.
4. We let Troy pad the score in a losing effort in order to give them the requisite confidence to win 10 games.

Please direct any additional concerns to me regarding doubts this season.

There will be what the players do and there will be what the players don't do, those actions will be the primary factors in determining the outcome of the game. Throw in a little bit of Coaching and a little bit of the refs and that's it.
What you do in your boots will have exactly zero impact.
I personally think it's gonna be a lousy Saturday to be a UL lineman of any kind.

I get kinda tired of the "shoulda woulda coulda" talk.

We found a way to win. They found a way to lose. THE END!

Just enjoy the ride, dood! These are good times. We're not going to win every game for the rest of time, but why wouldn't you think we couldn't prolong our current high? We're 30-2 in the last 32 and Dabo still says "the best is yet to come!" Expect greatness. I know everyone in the Clemson Football program does.

Re: Badly needed negative Nancy post

Sep 14, 2017, 4:04 PM

IF, and I know it's a big IF, the tigers do this they will win gong away:
1. The DE's must keep the play inside of them. They can't let Jackson get to the outside
2. If we can keep out To;'s to 2 we will turn them over 4-6 times due to hits by our D3.
3. Our O must be brought out of the box and we must take what they are willing to give us. Looks like they are vulnerable ton the pass and if so, pass the ball. If not run the ball but not always outside runs.
4. When we have had some difficulty it has ben primarily because either we brought it on ourselves or in a coulee of the games we got hosed by ACC officials.

I like the Tigers to win and cover minus 3 by a wide margin and accordingly have placed a very good sized bet reflecting that. Put simply, what I saw the our Tigers do on D last week was nothing short of spectacular. The closing speed of our DB's, safeties and LB's was better than what I have seen since I became a fan in the 2010 season. Second, I will be stunned if Jackson does not spend a good portion of the game on his #### from our violent pass rush. Personally, would not surprise me at all if he is not in at QB in the 4th quarter.

My wife and I leave tomorrow to drive to Louisville and spend a few days in the KY area. Hope to see some on this board there. I will
be the one with an orange cap, sneaks, shorts and shirt. I'll be easy to find at the bourbon bar inside the stadium. Makers makes all the difference in the world. Go Tigers and let's bring it home once again.

Don't forget about Ohio St

Sep 14, 2017, 4:19 PM

You take away their fumble and two interceptions and if they had gone for it on 4th and long or attempted some 50++++ yard FGs instead of punting 7 times and made them all, and if we had missed that FG and all 4 extra points, we could easily have lost that one, too. I still thank my lucky stars daily for all those breaks to help us get out of there with a win!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not sure I can agree with CSO's post more----

Sep 14, 2017, 4:55 PM

60 years of closely following Clemson sports has made me cautious about predictions, large point spreads, and the sirocco of confidence that eventually dissipates. One person CAN make a difference in a game.....and Lamar Jackson has proven himself capable of being that person.

But Clemson has some players who can also be "that" difference maker....on both sides of the line.

The only thing I'd add to CSO's intelligent post is that:

I think Clemson has a better coaching staff....and one of our coaches could be the individual who is the difference maker in the outcome of the game.

Plus...The one thing about Coach Swinneys teams is that they play till the last snap of the game.....its true Clemson "could've" lost several games last season but didn't---and I think much of that is attributable to the attitude that Tigers are never out of the game.

Having said all that---I sincerely hope Clemson kicks the beejeesus out of Louisville in front of their blacked-out home fans (at night??--whats the point??).....I hate the close ones....:~)
