These are the type of moves that we have desperately needed the last few years.
With what this team returns next year + these impact players from the portal, I am as optimistic about our ability to truly compete for a national title as I have been since those Deshaun and Trevor years.

as their respective personalities may both be considered annoying that is where the similarities stop. 1 invokes murderous thoughts, the other has not.(Not my thoughts, of course)Placing them in the same group led to the mistaken identity & the hypothesis: that JK and FM are the same individual)...these are mistakes borne out of the limitations of binary thought.

if you define this as objective…. “It’s time for Dabo to retire. He is done.” Or maybe your objective is broken if you are going to tout your optimism for a program under a coach a few weeks after saying he’s done?

Wrong way to look at it. If your culture is a meritocracy then you want a depth of quality players who compete for the right to be the starter, and you want them to fight like they have to earn their jobs from one game to the next. While every transfer may want to start, not every one of them does. If they are good, they may still get more playing time than where they came from. We see starters transferring, so playing time for them is not the main goal, and in some cases, neither is money. Some are just looking for a higher profile program that will help them get ready for the next level.
As my previous response stated, we were light on the OL, both in terms of quality and quantity, and we wanted to upgrade the talent. For me, that is how you use the portal and once you get past all the guys who are in it for the money, there is still considerable value in the portal if you do a good job on talent identification. Look at HS and how many 2 and 3 star players we developed into great players. Boulware and Renfrow say Hi, to name two. The portal is no different; it is just a matter of finding those diamonds in the rough and competing to get them on board when the needs arise and there are gaps to be filled.
I've always believed in selective and targeted, and not the FSU or CO approach. I think Brad has used it to his advantage in basketball. While somewhat apples and oranges compared to football, the premise is still valid.

Kids typically transfer out of a school where they weren’t starting so they can start at another school.
Transfer kids move to transfer - not be depth.
With that clear - nobody is building depth with transfers. They bring in starters. With that said - which specific starters are you looking to push aside for a transfer?

Read what the SMU coach attributed as to the primary reason for their year over year success. He said it was all about 13 transfers they brought in as quality depth that made the difference. He said it made a huge difference in their conditioning because they weren't wearing out their starters and that allowed them to stay fresh throughout the games.
The reality is there are only a few open starting positions on most rosters, and those transfers do have to compete for those jobs whether they like it or not. The fact that each portal window has had 3000+ players tells you that the majority of those aren't going to transfer into starting roles but that isn't keeping them from transfering.
And I've already given you my take on how I look at it, which isn't about pushing any specific individual out but more of establishing a stronger culture of performance that lifts everyone's game.
Iron sharpens iron...

Dec 19, 2024, 6:59 PM

to take on another depth role? That’s not what’s happening out here.
They want to start - that’s most often why they’re transferring. The elite are not taking portal guys to be backups. They are building their roster through HS recruiting and will add a starter as needed. Think of Andrew Makuba, for instance.

Of course it's happening. There are way more transfers than there are starting jobs available. It's simple math. They may all want to start but most won't.

wow this is so short-sighted. Yes, some kids are like this and it's the job as a recruiter to avoid them. But for the vast majority of the kids coming from the non-powerhouse schools, this is their chance to level up. You act like we all know who is going to be the best based on how they did when they were 15 years old. Every year there are first round picks from non-P4 schools. Last year there was a kid from Toledo. I am willing to bet that will change though because these kids are going to move from "Toledo" to Ohio State so they can get paid.

This is easy.
2021: OL 2022: CB 2023: WR 2024: DE and S
2-3 transfers every year. That’s all. We have, in the past, offered high school recruits late in the cycle, which prevented us from pursuing players in the portal.
Go back to the 2022 class for example. BV leaves for OU and we had a few 5 star decommits. We offered Jaheim Lawson, Kobe McCloud, Kylon Griffin, Myles Oliver, and Cole Turner really late.
Was it necessary to offer 5 low level 3 star recruits that were developmental projects?
All of them redshirted. 3 of them are backups in year 3. 2 of them have never played.

Again, please specify the current starting players you want to replace with a transfer player who wasn’t starting at his previous school.
I mentioned Andrew Makuba. Look at the starting QBs who have transferred. Look at the elite depth charts - transfer kids have taken starting roles because the staff has moved another guy aside. They don’t have a Walmart list of “depth” from the portal.
Typically when a transfer kid moves he’s moving because he was only depth on his previous team. If he doesn’t start at his new school, he’ll transfer again.
You’re confusing schools who build their roster with transfers to replace transfers with schools who take a limited number of transfers to fill starting roles. Like Makuba. Like the QBs. Like many WRs.
We will not be replacing 10 transfers with other transfers, and we will not be pushing aside a starter for a transfer. We will however bring in a guy intended to start in a position of need, like the DE. We will always look at guys who are willing to compete for a role, like the WR, but those guys are few and far between.
Kids aren’t transitioning from a depth role at school X to take on another depth role at school Y. That’s not what’s happening. Teams are either using the portal on a large scale, like Ole Miss and FSU, or they’re getting transfer starters, like UGA and Alabama. The best programs are using only key, starting transfers. That’s what we just did with the new DE. We will not be signing guys who will come to be depth. Sorry.

Very much agree. I’m happy Dabo is on board and excited about sat. But it gets old when people make excuses for him. Let’s be happy he is adapting and look forward to sat and beyond.

I’d like a LB and potentially a RB depending on how Saturday goes. I am happy to see the adaption to the current environment. Thanks coach!

what makes them "impact players"... they both have to compete for their jobs just like everyone else...
explain how, if we had both of these guys on the team this season, anything would have been different. That they were the difference...
I would wait but #### will freeze over first...
