Tigernet car mechanics, help pleeze...

2

Jun 10, 2023, 9:16 AM

When I make a hard left turn, particularly going up a hill, my front right tire makes a clicking/popping sound.

Some days it's not an issue at all, but recently I've noticed it every so often and I like to stay on top of any car issues before they become dangerous.

My research tells me the clicking sound may be related to a bearing in the CV joint being pushed to its limit.

Should I get this fixed asap or can I kick the can down the road a few weeks? Also how much should I expect to pay for the repair?

Thank you

If in fact you have

Cv joint failure, the fix is typically cheapest to swap in a completely new or rebuilt axle assembly. Most cars won't require any alignment afterwards. A few will. There are shops that specialize in front end repair and some even advertise a "cv axles, all cars, ### per side installed." Do some googling, but unless you are calling dealers or large chain independent shops you should be fixed for a couple hundred or less.

I agree, it sounds like a classic CV Joint failure. And, as

in a lot of car parts, it is best to replace CV joints in pairs. If one is worn out, the other is probably not far behind. It's not that hard to do, there are Youtube videos aplenty about it.

IF you are NOT a DIYer, I hope you have a mechanic you trust who will not rip you off.

Absolutely, if it isn't warranty work, never take it to a dealership, you will pay triple of what you can get it done for at just a mechanic shop.

Car Dealerships

1

Jun 11, 2023, 8:24 AM

Car Dealerships suck. How did such a big piece of the American retail economy get so hopelessly awful?

Nothing about car dealerships make sense from the point of view of the customer. The pricing on cars is inflated, the sales process itself is overly complicated, dealerships act like their business is really financing, and the very design of those businesses make it clear the customer is expected to wait a long time for anything and everything.

Cars are commodities. Why are these commodities most often stored on relatively expensive property on a main street in every town in America? Why are the cars stored outside and so need to be washed repeatedly before being sold? The pricing of new cars is crazy; most often the person 'selling the car' has no idea what the actual sales price of the vehicle is or should be. The customer almost never knows what he or she will have to pay to purchase the vehicle.

Cars are generally speaking reliable products. Why are car sales offices set up as repair shops? Why does an oil change or tire rotation cost more at the dealership than anywhere else in town? Why, when everyone knows you will always overpay for any necessary repairs at a dealership, do so many Americans take their cars to the dealership for routine maintenance and worse yet for an actual repair? Taking a car that needs repair to a dealership is like taking a car that needs washing to the dealership.

Most everyone who can understand the scam of car dealerships already knows everything and more about how the process is corrupt. Most such informed customers know how to avoid most of the car dealership scams. So why am I writing all this crap?

I dunno.

It sounds like a ball/cv joint. I would get it looked at as soon as you can. It could last 3 days, 3 weeks or 3 months. It's a crap shoot and when it goes for good it can cause more damage or worse an accident.

In the mean time, take it easy on the turns be more cautious when driving. The bad thing is that if one side has gone bad, the other side may not be far behind unless there was some specific damage to the bad one that didn't affect the other one.

Be safe!

This is correct, if one is bad, chances are the other one isn't that far behind but, if money for the repair of both is a problem, have the bad one fixed, and in a week or two have the other one replaced!!!

CV joint is going bad. But if you've never had any dealing with CV joints, don't try and fix or replace it yourself. Those joints have a lot of tiny needle bearings that are pretty tough getting them back in their cup once they fallout, and chances are you will lose at least one, and losing just one can cause a failure very soon afterwards...

Front wheel drive I assume?

I'd stuff several large handfuls of Blue-Tack, about 100 or so of those little sticks, into the transmission to rule that out as a problem. If this does not fix the cv joint, then your transmission has issues.

Try to find a private mechanic. The dealers will eat you alive.

Agree with the others. CV joint. Had this very same thing, wow, about 25 years ago and still remember the sound and fix.

Sounds like a constant velocity problem to me. The guy who invented front wheel drive cars should be hung by his gonads!

All cars have a cv joint and as someone suggested, a dealer will charge you a fortune to fix it.

My first manager at GM designed the front axle shafts for the Olds Tornado that introduced fwd back in the 1960’s. Not sure but he might be the one you want to hang from the gonads. However, he passed several yrs ago, so it’s a mute point.

I’d test it at 90 mph then make a quick right.

It’s probably just a piece of the plastic mud shield that has broken loose and is catching the tire when turning. Either zip tie it back up or rip it out and be on your way.
