Mostly confident generalizations but what else can they say?
“I sucked last year and didn’t do anything in the offseason to improve. In fact it’s likely this year we take a big step backwards. That’s to be expected given that I don’t care and didn’t work hard. Didn’t see the need to because most of the players are crap and our coaches are lazy. It’s going to be a long disappointing season.”

Agree 100% We have the talent to be awesome this year! Coaching, execution, and desire is what it takes for a great Defense. They have to show it on the field, but we definitely have the talent this year to be a top 5 Defense nationally!
Go Tigers, Whoop Dook!

Those of us who were paying attention witnessed Goodwin making vast in-game adjustments between early season and second half of 2022.
That Goodwin is digging into the finer aspects of technique (which of course he and the D position coaches will address) gives us reason for additional optimism.
Our limited depth at both DE and LB is my biggest concern. Haven’t yet figured out how to blame Goodwin for that.

Should come to Clemson. Coaching amd development matters and that is where the focus needs to be and to stay. Then you use that resume when recruiting.

The biggest thing that Goodwin has going in his favor is that he's a pretty intelligent individual, and given enough time, he will become a good DC....

All these comments like these ones below are crazy to me:
“I’ll believe it when I see it” “We’ll be the judge of that” “Don’t talk, do”
Based on the title it’s clearly a puff piece to get people pumped following media day, if you’re angry that he’s speaking before he has a chance to actually showcase his improvements, why read the article in the first place? Y’all did it to yourselves…
At least he was able to own up and diagnose his own shortcomings and issues from last season, how many of you could publicly do the same? You’re entitled to your own opinions about Goodwin and Clemson Football, but sometimes y’all do too much…

Aside from wanting everyone to know how much of a macho hard-a$$ they are, I have no idea why even say it.
B/c, why give interviews then? If people out there are going mouth the same dumb stuff "don't talk, show me results". Who are they trying to impress on a message board??
I guess Napoleon complex is still alive and well.

Brandon Streeter was hired with more OC experience...

at the college level than theChad, ScElliott and Garrett Riley combined, when they were crowned Clemson's OC.
1 - theChad, Tulsa 0 - Scott 0 - Elliott 3 - GR, SMU[2] & TCU[1]
Coach Streeter was 6 years the OC/QBC at Liberty & Richmond, 3 years at each.
Of all of those coaches, Brandon is the one that took the traditional route. Dabo didn't just throw out Coach Streeter, he threw out the baby that was the Clemson Offense he'd branded since theChad arrived. If folks remember, Dabo jumped up on a log and pissed his territory, making sure everyone knew it wasn't theChad's, but Clemson's and promoted the story that if theChad happened to leave, the offense didn't leave with him.
Throw Dabo into the equation, no coordinator experience prior to being named interim and things really appear to be a crap-shoot trying to find the right conductor & music.
Would have been interesting if Coach Spence had left for one of the three jobs that appeared his for the taking in `2007. Saban & Bama, Minnesota & the Lane Kiffin Raiders. Bowden told Dabo he would be named OC if Rob did in fact leave.
Would Bowden have survived the change, and if things went poorly, would Dabo have survived in that more hands on role?
Kicking things around, but little if any in this world is guaranteed...

look so good on paper. Goodwin, too, has the traditional resume.
Dabo just has the intangibles - you can't name them beforehand but you know it when you see it. I've never seen this in Streeter or Goodwin. I want them to have it. But I haven't seen it.
** And by close to pure luck the cards played out such that Dabo became HC

IMO Streeter got the axe based on the O flaws the mushroom cloud disasters from just 3 games last year.
ND. Our blocking schemes were not adequate for playing against a good team’s defense that wasn’t already thinned out by injury. (FSU and NC State had good defenses up front, but were very short of DL depth and healthy starting LBs, respectively.)
SC. (Admission: I was initially wrong when asserting that SC’s defense had so loaded the box to prevent us from successfully running the ball in the second half.). Watching reruns of that game, our run game at start of second half was Drano and SC’s run defense was soft grease. Early in 2nd half, we were (1) running the ball at will and (2) had worn out their LBs and DL. Of course we had game film of SC’s game against Missouri; Missouri essentially didn’t even bothering to pass the ball in the second half. By the time that Baby Beamer made the adjustment to load the box with an extra safety, SC’s LBs and DL were worn out. Streeter was in position to walk away with a comfortable victory vs SC without needing do anything more exotic than an occasional RPO on a second down situation when DJ would run except for when SC had a coverage bust and us with a wide open receiver, in which case DJ would have a 33% chance of completing the pass. Instead, Streeter began opening drives with pass plays, which played into the (legitimate) strength of SC’s defense … their secondary. Looking back at the game rerun and also at SC vs MO rerun, Streeter’s play calling was inexcusable.
TN. See ND. Even at the end of the season, Streeter revealed his inability to recognize TN’s blitz design based on Clemson’s down and distance situation. Quite frankly, Streeter’s cluelessness in (not) adjusting to TN’s blitzes was embarrassing.
(*). Given Streeter’s offense coaching experience and his terrible performance as an experienced coach, it was time to cut him loose.

He’s not blaming players, he’s giving concrete examples of what went wrong on defense. He goes on to talk about how one of his biggest improvements is in coaching developmental football. He knows those technique breakdowns on the field trickle down from the top.
I find this encouraging. Give me a coach who can pinpoint exactly where a play is breaking down vs the coaches that interview and all they have is “we just need guys to want it more”.

It's nearly impossible to make an accurate assessment of his performance last season.
1) First year in his system, for him and his players. 2) He was dealing with an extremely inexperienced/vulnerable backfield, which completely changes the way you play your front seven, which included the DL, the strength of our team. 3) The offense was not able to do their part, largely due to QB play. Offense and defense each have to do their jobs for a game plan to work. If one isn't pulling its weight, the other will eventually struggle.
Hopefully we'll be able to better assess his ability this season.

I lost count how many times he said "super excited" or "great kids". How about "we need to work a lot harder and be more physical and that's my job". If anybody remembers we heard all this prior to last year and did not live up to the hype. Football is a tough game and it takes tough but fair-minded men to run the show(not just X & O ability). This coaching staff needs to have physical practices THROUGH OUT the season. I don't want to hear the worry about injuries- you have to take that chance to be what you want to be. GO TIGERS!

Despite inheriting Venables defense, it usually takes a while for a coach to bring his team around to their full capabilities. I am hoping to see more from Goodwin and the defense this year.

With a stronger secondary, (and 3 really good linebackers) we will.
Also, expect the offense to be better which take the pressure off the defense and put them in better positions.
Couldn't blitz too much last year given how weak our secondary was, especially early in the season.

This unit will be a top 5 defense in the country. And FM touched on it. The play of our offense can not be overstated as it relates to our defensive performance. We are going to be good on offense. Realty, really good by comparison to what we saw last year. If all goes well and we get a few breaks along the way and avoid serious injuries to key players there is no reason this defense could not be the best in the country.

Of course everyone (me too!) hopes this year’s offense will be much better, and thus take pressure off the D.
Although excited about G.Riley and CK2, we all need to keep in mind that these are two huge and (for our team) unproven factors. Our Spring game’s meager (at best) offense performance could be understandable because of O-Line units that had mixtures of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd team players -&- absence of key WRs.
Then again, our D also had numerous key players out, to go along with the fact that both Orange and White D units were a mix of of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd team players.
In other words, in game like conditions, our offense didn’t look like anything special during Spring game.
(*). We will rely on our defense to bail out our offense, not so much our offense bailing out our defense … at least for the early part of the season.

My 2nd year of college ball; "I had figured things out and was able to start contributing big time"! I have no reason to think a 1st time ever DC won't be better having learned by fire the 2nd go round. And, especially someone who is smart as Coach Wes!
All the bumps we took last year; I think will serve us well this year! Bumps and growing pains by players at certain positions(Wiggins, Miller, etc.) and coaches! This go round I think we will be able to see it.
Go Tigers!
