should be ashamed. That was pathetic and disrespectful to a team that was picked 14th preseason and is in 6th place. About time Brownell calls them out for not showing up. There was a lot of talk about them not showing up to support the team. If you're a student and didn't show up, you should be ashamed

I was an engineering student and received my BS and MS in Bioengineering and I never missed an ACC home game in 6 years... EVER. That is NOT an excuse.

Free tickets, plus a free head band for the whole student section i believe. The first 1000 students got t shirts. I went to the game and would've gone regardless, but usually promotions get more students there.

I was too due to the fact it was an acc game...it was very important to have the students there for support for the team and I hope they just cut the number of student tickets to 1000 plus band for the new arena. But they missed a great game and I was happy to be there to see these guys win an important game.

And we better hope he does not. The recruiting is the best it has been in years and we have some good ones coming in. With the new arena being build and something he has wanted...he knew it would take a little time to get us to where we were competitive. Smaller but vocal crowds in a midsize gym and pay him well...we start hitting the NCAA dance every year and people will start crying cause they cant see a game...too bad. Cant wait for the new arena....

The students that make me mad
Feb 19, 2014, 12:15 AM
|

are the ones that went to the game, got the free stuff, checked in on roar rewards and left. They just went to pick up their headband and walked right back out the door. The roar thing doesn't get people in, it only gets them to walk close enough to the stadium to check in. Central Spirit is the only students at any athletic event.
I was at my engineering test, and this was my second basketball game I missed this season that I could go to (The first was at the same time as a soccer game) But I am sad to say I saw the turnout was awful.

If you can't get drunk at it or it's not something interesting to put on twitter, the students don't care.
Also, I think I heard during the broadcast that we're like 350 out of 351 in game tempo. Boring as hell basketball isn't going to get people cheering in the stands. These students are used to seeing 50 points at a football game, a 40 point basketball game might as well be baseball to them.

very busy time of the semester right now for many, including myself. Would liked to have gone but the cards didn't fall with the project I'm working on, however I am not ashamed, and don't particularly like being called out like that on something as simple as a basketball game. Enjoy the win and find something else to complain about

Don't know if you're aware, but a lot of people after graduation actually have to move away from Clemson. We can't walk to the games or take a 5 minute car ride to the games. We also don't get free tickets.
I can't speak for all alums, but for me...buying tickets, leaving work early, driving 2+ hours to Clemson, attending the game, driving 2+ hours back, and being at work by 7am the next morning is probably a little more difficult than it would be for a college student.
Just a guess though.

I'm aware of this, thank you. I'm just tired of the students getting 100% of the blame for attendance, when the people who call us out are the ones sitting on the couch. Littlejohn holds what, 10k? 12k? You're telling me there aren't enough alumni within reasonable driving distance to crack 75% capacity?

There's a lot more to it than that

I'll let you in on what the real world looks like.
First, 9-5 jobs are a thing of the past. I don't know what you consider a reasonable driving distance, but even if I lived in Greenville, SC for example doing my same job, making a game during the week is next to impossible. I'm happy when I can leave work by 7pm or so.
Second, I graduated Clemson in 2001 and attended grad school after about 6 years in a professional field. I have student loans that are more than the mortgage on my house. I also have a wife and a 5-year old son that I support. Even if I could leave work in time to get to a game, I have to pick and choose which Clemson events I can go to that fit into a budget. That's the reality of the present economy.
Students on the other hand get free tickets and live within walking distance or a 5-minute drive. Even if you take the students who had engineering exams last night, there is no excuse to not fill the student section.
When you're 35 with a career, family, mortgage, etc. come back and let me know what your capabilities are to attend basketball games on a Monday night.
Furthermore, with all this in mind...as a former student I would encourage you to take advantage of every opportunity you have to attend Clemson sporting events because one day you will look back and wish you could still be there and you will miss your days at Clemson. Don't miss those days now!

Great, that's good for you. I'm also aware of what the "real world" looks like. And I also know that every Clemson alum is not in your shoes. There are plenty within 30 minutes of Clemson who can go to the games, and choose not to. Don't even pretend as if that's not the case. Lack of interest in the basketball program is not just limited to the students, and we both know it. And to your last point, I am taking advantage of it. I'm having the time of my life.

The rest of it, we'll just agree to disagree.
Even people working in places like G-Vegas have a tough time getting to games during the week. It just isn't the same as being a college student.

I went to game last night. But my first one this year. Great game and I call BS on the tempo and not fun to watch. It was really fun to watch. But for some non students it is hard to go. I have twin babies and a 5 year old, and I work 6 days a week. In order to go to game I only saw my kids for 30 min in a 24 hour period and then left for work before they woke up this morn.
I know students have things going on too. But you can walk to the game and get in free. Plan ahead and study for a test before the game and after. It is 2 hour game! When they have a family and 60 hour work week they will wish they had taken this great opportunity to see games for free and walk to them.

Of course we have the "power" sports that most people like watching, but I had/have a lot of friends that didn't care for baseball or basketball, just as I don't like soccer.
It's ridiculous for someone to call you "not a true fan" if you don't care about going to a sporting event because you don't like the sport.
That being said, I agree that it's embarrassing that the current students don't show up in force to bball games with regularity anymore, out of the 20K student body, there has to be enough people that like bball to fill up the allotment of student seats.
