It was a great game. Considering we were coming off a 6 and 5 season. the polint spread was probably a lot bigger than this year's.

My freshman year as well. We had season tickets so I sat in the south upper deck, 5 rows up right on the 50

Crazy loud.

I remember walking down the concourse after the game, and it was packed. Every few minutes, the whole crowd would just spontaneously erupt like we just scored. There was UGA older female, beside me who yelled “well, at least you won’t ever win a national championship”. I think of her often

games I have ever been to in person.

That said, 1981 was a completely different era. It would shock me even more than the '81 win if we were to win in two weeks.

To put it in modern-day parlance, the vibes coming off the end of the 1980 season (young Danny, orange britches, beating the coots, a team on the rise) were very different than the vibes around this 2024 team.

Believe it not, but the point spread was "only" 4 points. It was not a great game. It was a horrible game (lol).
Your defense played very well, and our offense helped your guys out to boot. I think it was our 1st or 2nd possession, we fumbled deep in the red zone on what looked like a certain scoring drive. A drive or two later, we had a big completion that was nullified by an illegal man downfield penalty. And it got worse from there. Another potential drive was stopped when Belue went on a rollout and simply dropped the ball with no one around him. All in all, I think we had 9 turnovers. Some were caused by your defense, but some were just goofs by our guys. 9 turnovers and we lost by 10. Dang. Was certainly the Tigers' day that day.
That was the last UGA-Clemson game I did not attend, except for the 2013 game (also a Clemson win, btw). Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it was the first time Clemson ever beat a top 5 team in your history as well (we were ranked 4).

I’m sure you remember the 1980 game the year before at your place? Safe to say we gave you your Natty in 1980 and you returned the favor in 1981. We dragged you bulldogs up and down the field only to give the game away on a punt and interception return by S Woerner. Munson kept saying late “They’ve got all the yards, we’ve got all the points”. I believe we were still knocking at the door at the end of that 20-16 loss.

if you are going to lay claim for helping us beat you that day, then the least you could do is go back a year and thank us for the game the year prior.

I think you were up the prior year at the half 14-7 or 14-10 and had basically 0 yards of total offense.

I think it was Jeff Davis who said after watching you guys win the national title that year that the team realized they could compete for a national championship based completely on the fact they should have beaten the national champion that year.

You're right, turnovers were certainly a big factor the year before as well. But it was 4-2, which is not THAT big a difference. I mean it was 9-1 in '81. Come on.
That punt return obviously was a game-changer, but keep in mind y'all were three-and-out before the punt (I think it was your opening possession), so give our D a little credit there. It did set the tone early though. Woerner did not score on the interception return, but he did get it inside the 5, where Belue scored on a keeper. Yes, we didn't have much offense at the half, but those two plays accounted for a lot of "hidden yardage", and basically eliminated two offensive possessions. Maybe we wouldn't have had any offense with those two possessions, but then again maybe we would have. We'll never know.

Also remember that we helped y'all out on a couple scores too. At one point your great kicker, Obed Ariri missed a long FG, but we were offsides giving y'all the 1st down. You drove it inside the 10, and your backup QB (Gasque??) was in for Homer. Your RB (Austin??) fumbled the ball around the 5 yard line and the backup QB picked it up and scored. Then with only about 3 or 4 minutes left in the game, we had driven into Clemson territory to about the 40 or 45 or so, and had 4th down. On the punt attempt, we dropped the snap and y'all recovered on our 40 yard line. You needed a TD and drove it inside the red zone, but our D tipped a pass and intercepted the deflection (gotta credit the D there) at the 1 yard line. But there were still a few minutes left in the game and you had your timeouts. Herschel ground out a couple first downs - one on a long gainer - when everyone knew he was gonna run the ball, and that ended the game.

Yes, you made a couple big mistakes that we certainly took advantage of, but we made some as well. But nothing like 9 turnovers to 1.

Punt wasn't the game changer. the rest of the half went like this

We took the next possession and drove down the field inside the 30 and missed a field goal.

Then held you guys to 3 and out

Then got the ball again and drove down the field inside the 10 and throw an interception at the goal line that was returned 90 something yard. You score on the next play.

We then go three and out.

You go three and out.

Then we drive the length of the field for a touchdown.

You again go three and out

We drive down the field - 1st and goal at the 4...end up with 3.

halftime...this could easily have been 24-0...certainly you shouldn't have had the lead...

just the way the ball bounces I guess.

9 TOs was certainly a lot that day but with option and wishbone offenses it wasn’t uncommon to have 5 TOs. Most teams didn’t throw until they had to on 3rd down and that put INTs more in play also.

Clemson started it's football resurgence in 1977. After loosing a close game to Maryland in the opener went to Athens and won. This game and the next 10 were a true rivalry until UGA ended the series in 1987. Picked up sporadically with1990-1991.
1977 Clemson 7-6
1978 Georgia 12–0, Clemson tried to run 175lb Lester Brown up the middle against UGA's Wide Tackle 6 line
1979 Clemson 12–7
1980 #10 Georgia 20–16 held Hershel in check, Scott Werner returned a punt and int for TDs and Jeff Hipp intercepted Homer Jordan in the end zone on the last play.
1981 Clemson 13–3

In the 1981, Tom Moore, Clemson, picked up on film that QB Buck Belew didn't set his stance when under pressure and the ball sailed, so we ran high safeties and unloaded on Belew resulting on 5 ints.

I saw the 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981 games. They were true Classic games and decided 2 National Championships!

Couple of things. First off, as I mentioned earlier, he didn't return the int for a TD, but rather inside the 5. Still a huge play, and he did return the punt for a TD. Second, that "last play" wasn't Homer Jordan but your backup QB, I think his name was Gasque? The pass was deflected by my good friend Frank Ros (who went to Eastside High School in Greenville SC, btw). So credit the D with a good play. But yes it was fortunate that Hipp could get the deflection. But it wasn't in the endzone, rather at the one yard line. And it wasn't the last play - there were still a couple minutes left in the game and you had your timeouts left. Y'all used all your timeouts, but your D was not able to stop Herschel from grinding out those last first downs, despite everyone knowing he was going to run the ball. We kneed it out around our 30 yard line to end the game. Herschel had over 120 yards with over 5 per carry.

And yes, no doubt they were classic games!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Interesting that you mentioned Jeff Hipp intercepting Homer! Jeff is my cousin..

He grew up in West Columbia...was All-State in football and baseball as Brooklyn-Cayce High School. He grew up a Clemson fan...his dad a Clemson grad...but wanted to play football and baseball. Bill Wilhelm wasn't interested in letting him do that, so he ended up at UGA...was All-American safety on their 1980 national championship team.

In the 1980 game in Athens, we were behind at the half, but had 12 first downs while the dawgs had zero, totally outplayed the puppies that year and lost - turnabout is fair play!

I was there. I was a senior in high school and I joined my sister, who was a sophomore at Clemson.

I have attended practically every game in Death Valley since my freshman year in1982. The atmosphere at that game was as very similar to some of the big games between 2016 - 2018. Absolutely electric.

I was in the upper deck, screaming down at the dawg fans as they began to exit in the forth quarter. I’m only slightly less obnoxious now.

Senior year. Was in a box and can't remember why. Would have been even better in student section. Some of you have great detailed memory of events, though I suspect much is Googled. I just recall the fun witnessing the turnovers.
Went to Athens next year Labor Day weekend , not as much fun.

I played BB with one of the backup LBs in Fike a few times. I can't remember his name but he had to be 6'1" and 230. He went to tackle Herschel as he was going out of bounds and got run over like a cheerleader. Herschel was a grown man.

It was a rock fight. Nine turnovers by the Dogs, rare for a Dooley team. Clemson beat them up. They didn’t want any more.

Sophomore year. It was HOT that day, and I remember some older fans near the student section requiring medical attention.

I was attending a Christian men’s retreat in the mountains. At game time we had it on the radio and began playing volleyball. The undersized team that I was on felt very inspired and pumped up. We won the game!

the west end zone. I remember thinking how cool it was to see line splits and holes for the rb from that perspective.

I distinctly remember, on one play, the Uga OL opened up a huge hole for Herschel, but suddenly the fridge was there and dropped him for a loss.
