I need to do better.
However, this bowl season, the bowl games are just confirming what I hoped isn't true. We are simply not keeping up with the big boys.
Those big boys are now all in the SEC—Alabama, UGA, and the up-and-coming Ole Miss.
Our QB, OL, and secondary situation is dire. In some ways, the WR situation is dire too. We are simply a shadow of the great teams during our run.
I guess I need to let go of the glory years. I think we can consistently be in the mix of a 12 team playoff birth, but I just don't see us being a contender next year or the next.
If someone thinks so, then I'd love to hear their opinion because, Lord knows, I want to be wrong.
Go Tigers!

OL.
Our final 4 games with RG position performance was not good. Our OL, with the lineup (left to right) being:
Leigh, Tate, Putnam, Parks, and Miller is not awful. Miller is below average in pass protection, but fine in run blocking.
We have one really good backup in Sadler. P.Howard and H.Sewell are OK as emergency backups, but neither are the caliber of player that we need on OL to have a high performance offense. (Maybe Sewell will get better; as a true FR starting late in 2023 season, what can we reasonably expect?)
Much of what was blamed as being poor overall blocking by the OL was bad blocking by our TE unit (with Ennis being the exception). Briningstool is, let’s be honest here, an awful blocker. Our R.FR TE J.Sapp was indistinguished here, but that is usually the case with FR. Our true FR TE’s were lousy at blocking, as expected.
Our RB position was erratic at pass blocking. Shipley improved a bunch in this area; he has become an average pass blocker. Mafah was an average pass blocker last year; he seemed to get worse this year. Blitz pickup by the RB’s was a skin-crawling thing to watch.
(*). In summary, our starting OL unit, had they all been able to play the full season, was actually pretty good. Sadler was the only reliable backup, better at Guard than Tackle, but that’s usually the case (because pass blocking by a Tackle is harder than pass blocking by a Guard).
(**). For 2023, we need … blocking, blocking, blocking: (1) a new (and good) center to replace the excellent play by Putnam. (Fingers crossed that a competent Center will emerge for 2024 season.) (2) Leigh, Tate, Parks, and Miller to all stay healthy & improve as expected with their previous experience as a foundation for improvement. (3). TE’s that run block. (4). RB’s that pass block well.
Why not be optimistic heading into 2024? All of the above will get fixed, and our offense (QB’s, WR’s, TE’s, help from young RB’s, and year long PK being improved … as should be the case with the additional experience) will be entirely different from 2023’s putrid performance.

But man, Ole Miss has good play calling, good QB, solid defense. I could go on and on; they would beat us.

Ole Miss (this year’s them vs this year’s ours) would beat us like Fred Flintstone vs a baby seal.
I’m confident that our 2024 team (on offense) will be truly good … unlike this past season’s putrid 7nit.
Our 2024 team’s defense unit will take a step back. Losing a first round NFL CB (Wiggins) is not replaceable for next year’s team. Just like, in 2022 season, we could not replace the superb play from 2021 season’s Andrew Booth. A super stud CB (which includes the height / length -plus- speed) that Wiggins and booth possessed is not something that we will have on our 2024 roster.
LB will be weaker, but still quite good. DE will be weaker, but hopefully OK if P.Woods can play a bunch of snaps and if true FR Darien Mayo can provide some quality PT contribution (I.e., somewhat like what T.Parker provided this year.
We should be very good at safety. Competitive with any of this year’s CFP teams. Ditto with DT position.
Overall, I am expecting us to reach the 12 team CFP for next year. I’ll be truly disappointed if this doesn’t happen next year, whereas I had no expectations for us to make the 4 team CFP of 2021, 2022, or 2023.

The OC, Charlie Weiss jr, said that Lane sees things in real time no one does, like none he’s ever seen in real time. He can see a mismatch, and I’m paraphrasing and not giving full credit for what he meant, in real time and exploit it, similar to someone with a photographic memory. Lane might be the most brilliant offensive coach in the game, that insight was really cool to hear and helped me process his brilliance.

I think you are going to have to come to terms with the fact that it's simply harder to be elite than it is at Alabama, Georgia, Ohio St., and the usual suspects. They simply have more resources.
Can it be done? Certainly. I think the guys coming in next year, particularly at receiver are a good start. However, the fact still remains that it's simply more difficult here than the gifted few blue bloods, and firing everybody and benching everybody is not gkingvto change that.

Pretty sure that we were at the top of the heap and THE elite team in 2018/19. Even the dreaded ESPN bozos were saying as much then. The only constant in life is change. We did not adapt to change well, had some echo chamber syndrome, made several missteps and have fallen a few notches. Still a proud program with a better roster than most. But we are not on the same tier as the small group of elite teams now.

We were also profoundly fortunate in the years of 2015 through 2018 seasons that there were very few serious injuries. For example, we had very little depth at OL in 2015; very little depth at DE in 2016 (Wilkins played DE that year); 2017 was a deeper team, also few injuries, but no superstar at QB; 2018 was our dominant year from both across the board quality and some depth … and also few injuries.
2019 season’s team was arguably our second most pure talent team in our history, but LSU was simply unreal.
Since the start of 2020 season, we have had key injuries and decreasing quality of depth. Starting with 2021 season, the quality of our offensive unit (across the board) was worse … except for PK. Clemson can’t win big in these scenarios, even if we had another D.Watson and a super stud WR.
So here we are.

I don’t think it’s an overreaction. Both lines of scrimmage weren’t good. Our OL gave up 8 sacks and Our DL had 2 with little pressure. We’re not built like we used to be.

Coaching changes / player leadership can change things

You’re right, this year’s team couldn’t and didn’t compete for a national championship. Hopefully the coaching change at Oline, the addition of Rumph, and less “misses” recruiting will be steps in getting us back to that level.
Reality was that with a slightly better and more efficient offense, our Defense was still at a level we could have been competitive with anyone.

I know how the landscape has changed, but I couldn't count the numbers of times over many years when pundit after pundit claimed we couldn't compete with the so-called "big boys," even during our runs in the CFP. What I'm going to do is rely on the man who led us to the Promised Land, not once but twice, to work his magic - - - again. Yes, we've got a lot of tweaking needed, but then again, we needed the same leading right up until that January 2017 national title.

Now that was a rational well thought out poast. I agree we are not in position to challenge for a national championship any time soon, but we are also not a bad team. We'll challenge to get in the playoff each year, but some major victories on the recruiting trail will have to take place before we challenge for another national championship. Go Tigers!!! Beat Georgia!!!

Allow me to spread a little bit of hope as a late Christmas present.
The 2023 season is done, and in the same way wins don’t carry over through a season loses don’t as well. Our record is now 0-0.
Winning the conference is very much in our reach. FSU will not be as good next year and I expect our offense to be better even if Shipley or Mafah go to the NFL
Our main problems in the bowl game were in the secondary and if any coach has shown he can develop players it’s Coach Reed.
We’ll be favored in every game we play next year besides Georgia.
The best thing about the extended playoff is that winning the conference automatically gets you in. From there it’s just survive and advance.
