Was reading the soccer post about them starting their season and hosting their 1st game of the season at Historic Riggs Field... never wondered about it til just now but what makes Riggs field "historic"? I mean we don't refer to Historic Death Valley? Thanks in advance.

Started in 1915.... part of baseball, tennis, track and football "complex". Football team played here until 1941.
Don't know when it got that official name but the Historic part must be due to it being used for 100+ years.

Easy, Riggs Field was both the football and baseball field back in the early 1900's.

Everything needs a brand these days but Death Valley tells you all you need to know.

Was named after Walter Riggs. Not sure of the year. If you watch the movie the Midnight Man with Burt Lancaster that was filmed on campus, you will see there was a track there at one time. All athletics "events" were held on Bowman field until they needed something bigger for Football in the early 1900's. There are pictures of the early games with people lining the natural hill by the road for the games.
Memorial stadium opened in 1943 (I think) and then all the football games were held there.

The track was rather unique

It had 4 100yd straight aways and 4 10 yard curves to make the quarter mile. Maybe I exaggerate a little, but it was definitely rectangular in shape. At some point they added a straight away down along the side of the baseball field so you had a 220 yard straight away and could run the 440 on a "J."
Ran around that track many laps at practice.

being the home for Clemson soccer, Riggs Field served as the home for Clemson football and baseball. Named for Walter Riggs, Clemson’s president from 1910-1924, and the University’s first football coach, Riggs Field has been a home to various Clemson athletic teams, dating back to 1915.
Clemson’s football team compiled a record of 57-17-6 record during its 27 years at Riggs Field, while the men’s soccer team’s current record there is an amazing 241-44-19 (.824). The Lady Tigers are 38-8-2 (.813). Even the baseball team won 70 percent of its games there when the baseball diamond was part of the facility.

...the baseball field was where the tennis courts are now.
We were able to use Riggs Field for intramural football.
