I’m not going to call someone identifying as gay mentally ill. But I’m not afraid to say that when God created each one of us individually, He did not make a mistake. He gives each of us a choice as to how to live our lives. Follow Him and believe in Him, or choose not to and accept the consequences. It’s outlined in The Bible.

I’m not saying who is doomed to hell. I can’t doom anybody. But personally I don’t believe we can have it both ways. We’re not perfect as humans so I try (and sometimes fail) to follow Gods commandments. We all have the choice to believe and follow Him, or not.

Gods forgiveness has limits. Just as any other Father he grows weary when we commit the same sin over and over. The repentant heart just isn’t there. I have my sins I know I’m not forgiven for. My lustful eye travels far too much. Among other things. Having I forgiven sins is not enough to keep the saved out of heaven. It just means our rewards will be diminished. A lesbian or gay man goes against Gods law. It’s no heavier a sin than any other. There’s only one that can send you to hell, that’s not accepting Christ and blasphemy.

So I don't comment here much, but I can't sit this one out. Are you truly comparing being gay to being a murderer? I am a pediatrician. I have adolescent patients who are gay. Every pediatrician has patients who are gay. They are just like you and me. They have goals, hopes, aspirations. They have fears, anxieties and often depression due to people who refuse to try to understand or accept them. They have no more similarities to a murderer than you or I do. Be careful who you hate. You may find out that it is someone who you love.

Right on. A lot of these people only “know” what their preacher tells them. The church has done damage of which I’m sure God would not approve.

Just for fun loser why don’t you share your posting history with your pastor (assuming you actually have one) and ask him if you’ve comported yourself in a Christian manner.
Seriously you calling someone a sinner is the height of hypocrisy.

If a man looks at a woman with lust he is guilty of adultery. How is adultery any worse than homosexuality? I know for a fact that a man can look at a woman and not lust after her no matter how beautiful she is, I do it every day. There is much more said about adultery in the Bible than homosexuality. According to Mosaic Law, both those who committed homosexual acts and those who committed adultery were put to death.
Sin can be resisted with faith in God's power to raise a spirit within us to adulthood. He does all the work, we just have to trust Him as we trust in Him. No, that's not double talk.

This is an awfully touchy subject for a lot of people as evidenced by all of the answers provided so far. I don't think the murderer comparison is fair, that's a momentary decision versus a lifestyle decision.
To attempt to answer your question I'll try to do it as simply as possible based on God's word alone.
When someone accepts Christ as their savior, they are committing an act of repentance. Repent means to turn the other way, move away from, or change direction. Upon acceptance of salvation we are to change our lives to live according to the Spirit, no longer according to the flesh, or to the ideals of this world.
As with any sinful behavior, it’s not about being tempted, but about willfully engaging in activity that goes against God’s law.
So to answer the question: Can you be gay and a Christian? Yes– You can be a Christian and, at the same time, struggle with same-sex attraction. But no — you can’t be a faithful, obedient Christian while willingly involving yourself in homosexual acts.
When we receive Christ as our Savior, we should no longer look to conform to this world and as an act of repentance we attempt (and fail) to abstain from sin. We should no longer knowingly do that which is sinful, such as lusting, lying, or practicing idolatry, yet we do because we are still human. They key point is even though we commit such acts, we strive to not, and do not willingly engage in that which God calls wicked. If you truly repent to become a Christian, that means you turn from knowingly living a life of sin to attempting to live a righteous life. I don't believe you can actively be gay and say you have repented, as your lifestyle is in direct confliction with God's word. Feeling a physical attraction to a same-sex individual isn't the sin, it's acting upon it that is.

Considering that it's not up to us to judge, then no, I won't lay blame. However, it is up to us to point the direction.
We are to love everyone. We are to forgive. We are to help those who need it and lift up those same people. We all have "crosses to bear". Either way, she's your daughter and you love her for that, whether you agree with her lifestyle or not....

That’s a great question. I am not very religious. I am smart enough in my own humble opinion to realize that I have no idea what is true and what isn’t. I will say, I hope it is all true.
I have heard very serious Christians say homosexuals will go to hail, and I have heard some say they will not. That’s very confusing. It either is or isn’t.
Will someone qualified please verify this? Are homosexuals going to hail or not?
Personally, I would really, really hope they aren’t unless they are terrible people.

No mistake. They were given one of the 2 genders at birth. But they were also given free will. If they use that to accuse God of being wrong about their gender, that is between the 2 of them.

So if he makes no mistakes then homosexuality and transexuality are part of his plan. Why do you have a problem with god's plan?
Or are you saying it's god's plan for some of the people he made and claims to love to suffer eternal damnation?
Either god made a mistake when it comes to homosexuality and transexuality or he's a malicious ####. Which is it?

Oldtel,
You, as a human being, have every right to believe whatever you want. However, when you want to force other human beings to live by your beliefs, then perhaps you are going too far.
By the same standard, other human beings have the right to view themselves in whatever gender light that they choose. However, if they are trying to force your child to view themselves in a similar gender light, then they are going too far.
As far as I can read, the text is merely laying out the playing field that I am describing above.

Where do these temptations come from? In this light, should homosexuality or whatever LGBT-letter salad be classified alongside pedophilia, necrophilia, bestiality, sadism and the temptation to cheat on your taxes? One can claim they were born this way, raised this way or one can claim the 'devil made them do it'. Either way, there are problems engaging in acts that are known to be bad for society's long-term health. The Bible is the best guide I've run across so far about how best to lead your life. It isn't easy, but that doesn't mean it isn't a good goal to aspire to.

entropy just like the rest of the universe. Our DNA has not evolved it's devolved and a lot of people are suffering from that sin in the garden.
Our obligation is to love God with all we have and love our fellow man as we love ourselves. I don't look down upon people who suffer from cancer or other horrible heath issues and I don't look down upon those who suffer from such devastation as DNA degradation.
We can hate sin without hating the sinner for all have sinned and come short of God's glory.

All gender dysphoria and homosexuality were listed as psychopathologies in the DSM-5 until two years ago. Normal brain function is to desire to multiply. Homosexuals cannot multiply.
So, you’re saying homosexuality and gender dysphoria is normal?! Ok.

Ha, that's funny. When Homosexuality Stopped Being a Mental Disorder
What they mean is when they stopped calling it a mental disorder. It's obviously still a disorder even after you snap your fingers and declare that it isn't, but now they hopefully protect the feelings of the mentally ill. That's what's most important. The feelz.

Jedi,
So you are willing to use the expertise of the psychologists and the DSM-5 as long as it agrees with your uneducated prejudice, but when these same experts change them perspective on these concerns, you write off their expertise altogether.
Please tell me where got this bullyshitt about normal brain function is to desire to multiply.

I was just re-reading the OP. I taught AP Geography in SC. Here that course is called Human Geography. It is far more focused on human interactions with each other and their environments than the geography that y'all might remember from high school. As such, these topics could much more understandably be a part of the curriculum. Again, more context would be helpful.

Hormonal imbalances are not normal, healthy conditions. Endocrinology is a very complex subject. There are numerous circumstances can cause sexual attraction malfunction. Pituitary ‘disturbances,’ thyroid ‘disturbances,’ and tumors / cysts on testes or ovaries readily come to mind.
My frame of reference on the above factors is not via formal endocrinological 3ducation. Rather, my admittedly limited anecdotal learnings from friends and colleagues are the basis for my comments.
To conclude, I believe that the normal hard-wiring for heterosexuality is the baseline. In a minority of cases (not necessarily a very rare minority), the hard-wiring is for homosexual behavior.
He’s admittedly a non-physician, but in his extensive legal work involving herbicides, RFK Jr has cited the use of the weak killer Atrazine with the populations of frogs in which make frogs had become very rare. The majority of frogs in drainage systems adjacent to crop fields in which Atrazine is used are born of one gender (females).
Endocrine disrupters chemicals are a big deal in the environment of the ‘civilized’ and ‘semi-civilized’ worlds. A human whose endocrine system had been altered while in the fetal state can have its ‘hard wiring’ messed up. I haven’t studied this, but I suspect that contamination of pregnant females with endocrine disrupting chemicals may be creating a larger percentage of homosexuals than would be the case if the endocrinevdisrupting chemicals had not been present in clinically significant quantities.
Again, I am not a physician, endocrinologist, or medical researcher. My work experience has educated me un a superficial way about endocrine disrupters; my reading of some of RFK Jr’s writings have provided some additional superficial education.

It’s a clever leftist tactic to conflate various human ‘conditions’ within a small group with other small groups which have different, yet partially similar, conditions in order to create a larger ‘hybrid’ group.
By this tactic, the leftists have cobbled together a self-identified victim group in the form of the LGBTQ+ special interest group.
Homosexuals who are attracted to other adults of the same sec are not close to either transsexuals or pedophiles who groom children that share their gender..
The Democrat Party and their leftist funders have done the ‘basic, uncomplicated’ homosexuals a big disservice by equating them with mentally ill transexuals / wannabe transsexuals and pedophiles that have pedophile predilections.
In summary, most people do not equate ‘regular’ homosexuals (the “L” the “B” and the “G”) as belonging with the “T” and the public exhibitionist “Q” subset of LGBTQ.

This means that I'm clearly trans/homophobic bc there is no way that anybody could/can convince me that lifestyle is something that just happens, and the medical science has never found anything in the human brain that leads them to believing that something in the human brain made a wrong turn and it causes either sex to believe they are trapped in the wrong body.
I believe it's a choice they've made, I'm personally ok with that as long as they never hit on me!!!
I don't believe that men or women are born to be a ####, or that they had a major brain fart that made them that way. Our sexual identity was made for us when we were conceived, and we grew in our mother's womb as a boy or a girl, and there is no such thing as a mix up bc the male sperm has X and Y chromosomes that will fertile our mothers egg/eggs and only one, the X or the Y chromosome will fertile the egg and not both, only one wins that race, and nothing changes that after we're born, there wasn't a gender screw up, and our brains know what sex we are, and no matter how many wild sexual fantasy thoughts people may have, they can't be used to make them believe they're really not who they were born as, they may get some people to believe that fantasy, I believe that it's a choice and they should man up or woman up and be who they want to be and stop telling people you were trapped in the wrong body bc they have the body they were conceived with and it isn't the wrong one just bc they would rather be either or, but I believe they're in the right body bc X or Y won the race and the body that came with it!!!

Is it though?! She isn’t a democrat by recent party standards. See the many democrats bailing on the party. The largest party exodus in US history. She’s a far left liberal with socialistic and communistic beliefs. She’s more of a Kamala Marx. Stalin was more militaristic in his transition to communism. Marx was the one telling the people “you will finally have a voice, a seat at the table to fight the bourgeoisie.” The bourgeois being the middle class land and home owners. Doesn’t that sound familiar? We can all be financially equal. We’re going to take from the rich and make everyone equal. Which is code for absolute control and no one is equal. Study history. We’re repeating it.
What has been the history of this country? The republicans saving the country from the evils of the democrats. Democrats were the party of slavery. Republicans freed slaves. Democrats formed the kkk. They (Dems) fought tooth and nail to block desegregation and the civil rights act. Yes, John F Kennedy proposed the Civil Rights Act but 90% of the democrats voted against it. Lyndon B Johnson swore to veto the act if it passed congress. Thank God it was a big enough Republican majority to make it veto proof. John F Kennedy tried to clean up the party and abolish the federal reserve. This got him killed. The democrats voted to block women’s suffrage. The democrats were infiltrated by the communist party after the communist party was rejected by the population. They decided the only way to infiltrate US politics was by becoming democrats. Franklin D Roosevelt was one of the communist interlopers and his New Deal is all the proof you need. The New Deal made it much harder to recover from the Great Depression. The next great communist president elect was Barrack Obama. His ACA destroyed healthcare as we knew it. I know more people that use a personal health savings account because insurance that cost $1200 a month has a $15k deductible. Communism. Redistribution of wealth. While middle class people struggle to get and pay for healthcare, the poor get first class healthcare for free. Obama also made truth in journalism no longer enforceable. In the over reaching NDAA he reclassified news as entertainment and made it legal to use propaganda against US citizens. He also made it legal to black bag a citizen with no charges and without EVER getting to speak to a lawyer. Obama censored the press and revoked credentials of the press when they spoke against him. While the Dems scream that’s what republicans do.
Democrats seize and burn cities without reprimand. In fact they are celebrated and called social Justice warriors. January 6th people are still locked up. Most over the age of sixty. Democrats (Kamala) claim they were an armed mob and hundreds of police officers and people were killed. The only weapons ant the Capitol were in LEO’s hands. Only one person was killed. A 90lb mother and US service veteran shot through a door. One DC cop had a heart attack and dies ten days after January sixth. Democratic students take over universities and lock Jews in closets with zero consequences. Jews are beaten and spit on by these Ivy League students. They’re democrats held to a different standard.
Democrats use lawfare to illegally charge and convict their political opponents. While screaming that’s what republicans do. Name one instance. Please.
If you don’t believe me about democrats through history google their voting on bills in congress. Democrats have been behind EVERY evil in US political history. Yet Trump is a danger. The Hypocrisy is real. The United States we know and love is in danger of being destroyed. We circle the drain and Kamala laughs. She can’t help it. She is half hyena.

Notice how the Democrat party has started to jettison their black constituency because the blacks are showing signs of shifting away from them.
Thus, the importation of huge numbers of future Democrat voters in the form of illegal + ‘redefined as legal’ illegal immigrants to replace disloyal American blacks with a new group of voters who will be loyal to the Democrats.

I don’t think they teach AP Psych which is why they try and hide iit in something like Geography where parents are less likely to notice.
I would be highly pizzed too. Amazing the lengths they will go to replace parents rights to raise their kids by the values of the family.

AP Psychology is a course that can be offered, but many topics are used in a cross-curricular fashion. There is an AP African American Studies course that also includes LGBTQ(...) material. That course was one that the Florida law effectively blocked in that state.

Well, they DO teach AP Psych. I taught it myself.
If a set of parents are raising their child in a christian household, does that mean that teachers should not be allowed to mention that Buddhists and Muslims exist ?? Is mentioning religious freedom really trying to replace parents' right to raise their kids ?

Maybe they are just trying to be torlerant of other people and their views. Maybe you should try it sometime.

that the LGBTQIA+ community (The Alphabet Gang) is an inclusive group of people when the reality is they are the least accepting, tolerant and inclusive group of people you will likely encounter.
How appropriate this surfaces on Halloween since gender identity (how these people perceive themselves) is effectively a case of playing dress-up and pretending to be something they are not 365 days per year.
At the end of the day, I couldn't care any less how someone chooses to identify. Just don't expect me to join you in your fantasy land and participate in the charade.

What’s hilarious is you think having to read a sentence on what gender identity is is somehow encroaching on your rights. Nobody has and ever will ask or force you to chop your little weeny off.
You on the other hand are demanding that another individual in this country act and think of themselves in the way you think they should. The irony is thick.

Ok well that may or may not be true, most likely not, but a man thinking he's a woman or vice versa is not something new. It also does not compare to some of the strange things people have believed or done throughout history, so it's just laughable to see some of you acting like this is a sign the world is ending or that society is in such a terrible state.
Again, you people believe there are actually people alive in an eternal fire unable to escape. That's even more crazy than a man thinking he's a woman.

You’re a clown. The point is that they hid the info in a ####### geography book, why would they do that? Young people’s minds are extremely impressionable. So they hid this completely unfounded lie in a geography book. Gender isn’t real. Sex is. Male and female that’s it.

Once again, the sentence simply identifies what gender identity is. Whether you like it or not, it exists. Period.
Do you have a problem with a World History class identifying the major world religions other than Christianity? Is that somehow a promotion of those religions? No it's not.

There are two genders. If RuPaul’s bones are dug up in 1000 years, a forensic anthropologist will identify the individual as a male human adult.

So you do care then, because if you have someone that’s been transgender their entire life and you’d never know they weren’t born the sex they appear, you’d have no problem calling the woman a man etc. if you didn’t care you wouldn’t say anything at all lol.

In Geography?!?!?! What does gender, even delusional made up ones, have to do with Geography? Why can't we just have the basics be built upon (though they would actually need to be taught and learned in the first place) instead of throwing crap like this into a subject that it has no relevance to.
Bring up the subject in AP psychology were the merits of how hormonal imbalances can create mental and behavioral psychosis (with parents well aware of it going to be talked about), but not in that class. I don't believe in burning books, but that page at least needs to go.

I am not surprised in the least, in undergrad college I majored in Geography (Not Clemson) and there was so much left wing Marxist crap spouted off in many of my classes. In one, I wrote an essay on my final exam about how disappointed I was in how the class was effectively a semester of propaganda that didn't come close to teaching what was on the syllabus and wasted everyone's time there.....

I can share something which might excite you.
There's a factor of thermodynamics called entropy. It states, generally, that all things degrade unless an outside force attends them.
Man is no exception to that and it is my believe that before Adam and Eve sinned entropy was not introduced into this universe. That leaves man suffering, our bodies are all dying slowly every day and our DNA has devolved. It is my belief that this is why man is straddling the fence on sexual preferences.
There is redemption for all in the Blood of Christ and we should remember what Jesus said to the woman caught in adultery. He stooped and wrote in the dust and as He did the woman's accusers began to break away. I believe He wrote the 10 commandments and each of them realized they'd broken one or the other.
Let's not be cruel in condemning others here, Clemson brothers. We've all sinned and the only One who can look down upon another was hanged on a cross 2k years ago. If you're going to have to look down look down with the love that He had on those He looked down upon, us.

A university level geography course - even an introductory one - covers far more than just spatial geography. Geography covers a massively wide range of study, including the way culture develops and shapes the Earth and the way humans interact with it.

This is what happens when there is no absolute truth. People can make it up and it want stop there. It will be more and more until people take a stand on God’s Word. You can’t just say it doesn’t effect me so i don’t care what people do , because one day it will affect you and your family. Wasn’t that long ago they just wanted “Equal Rights” and know you see where that has lead to. That is Satans game plan to question what GOD says and it started in Genesis.

Without commentary/opinion on the overall topic…I would guess the school could do very little about it, so your wife going up to the school would be a waste of time and seems awfully Karenesque. Textbooks are probably approved by the local or state superintendent.
Agree with others who say that the placement in this particular textbook or class is odd.
Lastly, this is surprising to me in a state that allows the teaching of creation in public schools and has the dubious distinction of housing the Ark Encounter Museum. Seems to me that the entire state of KY has its own identity issues…haha.

I’m not sure what the issue is here. It is simply a statement of fact on what gender identity is, not a promotion of it or an attempt to persuade anyone to identify as something other than their assigned gender at birth.
Also in Kentucky there is a giant boat displayed and passed off as an actual historical object that comes from an ancient myth attempting to persuade people to believe that nonsense. Why don’t you complain about that?

Is not trying to pass off as the actual arc, just a recreation of it. It is also an optional attraction you can choose to visit or not visit. It is also not being funded by my tax dollars. It’s existence is avoidable to my child if I choose to avoid it— which we don’t, we visit it every Christmas, it’s an awesome attraction and environment 😁

Where does this textbook say that you have to change your gender? All it does is identify what it is. In no way does it try to promote or persuade someone to change their gender.
The Ark on the other hand does attempt to pass off an ancient religious mythical story as actual history, of which there is absolutely ZERO proof.

The decoupling of the construct of "gender" from biological sex is remarkably recent, historically, and does not go back to the 60s.
But sure, disconnect them...for absolutely no good scientific reason whatsoever.
And sure, pretend that it has nothing to do with a socio-political agenda.

Just to clarify…the project did receive tax incentives.
Also, if this is AP Human Geography, then I can see how/why the information on gender identity would be more appropriate as opposed to just plain old geography…regardless where you stand on gender identity issues.
Also, since you visit the Ark encounter and enjoy it, am I to assume you are also a young earth creationis? If so, I would be more taken aback by the textbooks discussion of peoples and places older than say 6000-10,000 years old.
Lastly, I personally think most of this thread is a huge overreaction. Maybe before you burn the textbook you can take pictures of discussion before and after the blurb we got to maybe put things in a little more context.

“Men can be women if they think they’re women” isn’t complete or nuanced. It’s non-sense. Deep down, everyone knows it, even if they’ve become too afraid to say so in the past five years.
“AP” doesn’t mean what it used to.

In reading the highlighted passage, I went immediately to:
"What is truth?" - Pontius Pilate.
Which, if you trace *that* thought back through Scripture, you'll eventually land at Gen. 3:1: "Did God really say ...?"
Scripture declares that male and female are our primary gender prototypes. And, because we know that scripture is God-breathed, we can be assured of its authority, and truthfulness. Therefore, we can rest in the truth that God really did say "... male and female, he created them."
The choice, of course, is in whether we submit to the authority of Scripture, and accept it as true, or, whether we reject its authority, and live as though it were untrue.
It's been my experience that the level of chaos I encounter in my life, my thoughts, my moral framework, is 1:1 proportional to the degree that I accept or reject what Scriptures declare to be true.

Because, if you've read through the canon of scripture, you know there's a whole stack of chips riding on whether the story it tells, the narrative thread it weaves, is true or false.
I'd be happy to be wrong about my decision to step out in faith and follow Jesus, and stand on the authority of scripture, only to die and find it's all been one horrible lie, than reject him, and be my own authority, and follow my own understanding of things, and thus land in the unspeakable hell he described on a few occasions.

No, I am saying that if any part of the so-called "gospel" is unsupported by any data, it calls into question the veracity of that entire "gospel"

Either the gospels are entirely true, or they are entirely untrue. I do agree with you on that point.
So, if data is the final authority on the truth of the gospels, then what you're saying is data stands in judgement of the gospels (and probably all of scripture), and they come up short.
And that's an understandable take in the 21st Century, given the god-like status we've assigned data in a data-driven world.
I think the old folks would've used "evidence" in place of data. But of course evidence and data are not 1:1 comparison. Jesus told someone once that if they wouldn't believe in him on the basis of scripture and prophecy, they could at least do so based on the evidence (his miracles).
I often wonder if the Lord had chosen this age in which to insert himself into human affairs, what the language of the gospels would've looked like.
Either way, I suspect that, even in today's data-driven age, there would be many who would believe despite the lack of data in support of the belief, and many would want to believe despite the lack of data, and yet not believe, and then those who would just not believe, data or no data.
Because Jesus asks a lot of his sheep; namely, that we trust him and follow him, even when the data dashboards of our lives tell us to trust and follow is to face a possibly horrible outcome in this world.
This has been a good thread. Thanks for going along with me for a few beats.

This definitely shouldn’t be something approved in a textbook. Not for any grade level. I’m not against anyone doing what they want, but it shouldn’t even be mentioned at a school in a book for the masses. Some kids can’t handle that and it would definitely be something parents should choose when to tell their OWN children about. Ridiculous.

Has your daughter been harmed by this?
Are you afraid that she’s gonna read this book and “become gay”?
Are you afraid she’s going to read this and question whether or not she is a female?
I’ll answer all three questions. NO !
I’m 100% confident our kids are smart enough to read books and receive instruction and make decisions and establish their own values.
If they’re confident in their identity, this text is 100% no problem not harmful at all. In this case, your wife is wasting her time.
If some kids are insecure with their identity, maybe this will help them think that things through. in this case, your kids, my kids, other kids, other adults, etc. none of us are going to be harmed.
I have an extremely conservative and libertarian view on these issues. I believe I should have the confidence in the huevos to let other people do and say and believe and live as they please, as long as they are not harming others. I don’t have much of an opinion on what others should do.
I’m not gay, nobody in my family is, it’s not my cup of tea, but I see no reason why others can’t do as they please.

Your assumption is that the daughter isn't harmed by this. You have no basis for this assumption. It's well within the realm of possibility that she was, indeed, harmed. Ideas Have Consequences, by Richard Weaver. Check it out.
You also poison the well by tacitly accusing the OP of being "afraid".
Perhaps it's simply the idea that so-called gender identity has no place in a Geography text. And if not, WHY is it there?
I read all your qualifications, but I think they're irrelevant, because you ignored his real concern.

My original response in this thread was simply to point out that this was simply an acknowledgment of something, not a promotion of it. If you have a problem with gender identity being defined, which you clearly do, I feel sorry for you. I really do.
Maybe you should actually read the New Testament and see for yourself what Jesus stood for which was loving your neighbor, and not the American Trump version which is to insult and degrade everybody who doesn’t see things the way you do.
If a man or woman wants to be something or someone else, that is their choice, and it does not effect you or the person who has to read about it anymore than the fact that I have to see a church on every corner or listen to Christian’s promote their worldviews.

And you brought up the New Testament, which you don't believe, so I'm not sure why you brought it up either.
The only people "promoting their worldview" are the authors of the GEOGRAPHY text.
If you can't see that, I feel sorry for you. I really do.
But, not really. You've chosen ignorance and prejudice, so that's on you.

Psychology - ok we can debate the finer points of this. But we have kids in this country that can't point to where Florida or any other particular State is located on a map of the USA - and yet this clearly off topic garbage is taking up space in a Geography textbook?? Why in the world would such a thing happen??
To answer my own question - it's all about implanting leftism and it's doctrines into all aspects of study. Gotta ensure that DEI gets central billing no matter the issue so that the next generation all forsake objective truth for whatever emotion strikes their fancy in the moment.

This isn't the geography you should have been learning through elementary and middle school.
I'm ALL for a more robust educational system that returns to emphasizing the social sciences (including geography).
BUT, for giggles go grab a National Geographic magazine and notice the pictures and discussions of people and culture as much as the land itself.

That’s a losing battle. You should see my college text books teaching that crap as normal. They’re also teaching them that socialism and communism are the ultimate levels of enlightenment. They use actual quotes from Karl Marx. Teachers are also telling students something is wrong with them if they aren’t gay, trans, or insert any letter from LGBTQIA+ here. This is the democratic agenda in teaching. Destroy traditional American values one generation at a time. When we are dead and gone, so will normalcy be dead and gone.

1. Why is this in a geography textbook? If it was included in a sociology or psychology textbook, I would pass it off an description of a certain population minority.
2. The second paragraph's opening line reeks of indoctrination. If the sentence was describing a Christian with the prevailing moral values of the majority of US citizens, the entire section would have been stricken from the record and author "burned at the stake."
3. Is this what they produced from the donations to George Constanza's "Human Fund"?

The problem here is that you think someone having differing values means they are going against yours. That’s not the case.
You have a church on every corner in this country, yet you complain that your religion is somehow being censored. That’s laughable.
Your “values” ARE encroaching on the rights of others, not Vice versa.

Religion is different from faith and is different from true Christianity. If you want to know true Christianity, read ALL of the Bible, not just selected verses. Read the WHOLE story of Jesus Christ and the redemption He provided by His death, burial, and resurrection, not just the part you have problems with. I don't make the rules - God/Jesus did. If you don't like them or you want to disregard them, that is your choice not mine. I choose to live as a disciple of Jesus Christ and the mercy and grace He provided to me as one who had previously accepted the world's lies. If you don't, again, that is your choice. But, you will have to face real truth, not relative truth, one day.
Religion is a problem; faith is not. As stated before, I have had these discussions with you before. I have perused your other posts. Evidently, you are opposed to God and Jesus. Therefore, I am not wasting my time throwing pearls before swine any longer. Jesus didn't with the Pharisees and other religious leaders.

89,
I will agree with you that organized religion does more damage to our society than an individual faith might. However, even individual faith presents problems when one wants to make others live by their faith or if they want their faith protected from scrutiny or challenge.
I cannot be opposed to god or jesus because they do not exist. However, it is your human right to believe that they do.

Actually didn’t mean to give you a TU…but I guess you are welcome.
My guess is that this is a human geography textbook and this would make much more sense to include, regardless of your view on the matter.
It would be interesting to get more context and more verbiage before and after the discussion/inclusion in the textbook. Are they simply pointing out what this community is, that it exists, and have a few nice things to say…that doesn’t seem especially scandalous.

Teacher here.
9th grade is Human Geography. So it's about humans and the systems we have created. Economics, Political, Cultural, Social, etc.
The course usually begins with a brief period of physical geography and map skills.
Then populations and human migration patterns. So you delve into refugees, IDPs, and push/pull factors of immigration. I would usually highlight that America is great because so many people around the world are desperate to migrate here.
Then cultural geography which delves into language, religion, and other cultural aspects around the world. This is probably where the OPs child is at. My classes never discussed LGBT issues. But, I also did not have access to the textbook because it was not released yet. You could argue that this topic goes into sociology and psychology. But, since LGBT people exist in real life, I have no issues with what the textbook states. There are people that disagree with evolution even though every Biology book discusses it.
Then political geography which delves into political systems around the world like federal vs unitary systems, democracy vs authoritarianism, etc. I usually spent most of this section discussing the US system because of the importance of US History and US Government in 11th and 12th grade.
Then economic geography which delves into economic systems like traditional, capitalism, communism, etc. But also primary, secondary, tertiary, etc. systems. Globalization as well. I would focus on the difference in outcomes between capitalism and communism. Also would take the time to explain how globalization impacted them. We did a project that tracked the making of a single T-shirt that began with cotton in Mississippi, then traveled to Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Colombia before arriving back in the US.
Then there's urban geography which delves into urban vs rural divides. We focused on the benefits and drawbacks of urban vs rural areas ranging from jobs to safety.

Geography, despite what you may think is not just about countries and topologies, it is about the peoples and cultures as well.
From the AP webstie:
About the Course Immerse yourself in AP Human Geography by investigating population trends, exploring diverse cultural landscapes, and identifying spatial patterns across various scales. From bustling cities to rural areas, you’ll embark on a journey of discovery as you examine the diverse interactions that people have with the environment.
It is CERTAINLY appropriate to discuss gender roles and their perceptions among cultures and to present varied and rich historical context to how they have evolved throughout human history.
I'm not gonna argue that you have to BELIEVE the conclusions of the Council on Human Rights, BUT you do have to know them to understand the current worldview. And if your kid is old enough to be engaging in the discussion of varied cultural viewpoints then they are old enough to be exposed to the concepts that gay people exist and gender norms are not a hard binary.

Was it worth it? YES! We must have done something right. She'll be getting her PHD next summer.

The choice is at the state level already...

the Fed Dept of Education doesn't choose the test books a state uses. That is done at the state and local level already.
I'm all for ending the Federal Dept of Education, but I don't think you can blame the feds for this one.

My 14 year old daughter just sent me this from her AP Geography textbook… she’s a freshman in high school, public school. Anyone else with high school kids seen anything like this… seriously ###. My wife is about to go raise some hail at the school.
Would send that to your Senator and Representative in the House and ask if they support this. And, if not, what are they gonna do about it.

Raise hell and get rid of all these radical teachers, school board members and admins. They must be replaced as they are destroying our children and the country with their lies and indoctrination.

The church creates this upheaval and intolerance. Not God. The Bible is supposed to teach wisdom, but was written by humans who may have had other motivations.
Humans are full of sin because they seem to look outside themselves for the bad guy. We are all the bad guy and God waits for our accountability.
Your sin here is anger and you are not entitled to discriminate against God’s children.

Do some research on your local school board. They are the ones who approve the books. I imagine it won't take long to discover how this happened. Whether you can do anything about other than raise public awareness it is another thing.

I had to learn Shakespeare in HS and his works were full of gay themes. The book isn’t going to zap her and turn her gay.

All I asked was if anyone else had high school kids and have seen stuff like this in school text books as this is my first high schooler and when I was in high school and college none of this was ever mentioned. Was/am confused if it is normal in today's education and was asking for feedback.
Weird reply

You can bet that if a left wing kook had their kid bring home a textbook claiming Trump was a successful president they'd burn down the entire school yet you asking this simple question makes you a knuckle dragging threat to democracy. Sit down, do what you're told and have no opinion about anything or prepare to be destroyed.

This is why I homeschool. They can still play HS sports in most places as well. Best of luck with the woke-ified school board. Just know that the problem is much higher than them.
