A couple of scenarios to ponder...

1 - Can Syracuse beat Miami and send Clemson to the ACCCG? Syracuse currently ranks 58th in total defense while Miami ranks No. 1 in total offense. On the flip side, Syracuse ranks 13th in total offense while Miami ranks 14th in total defense. If Cuse takes care of the ball and can put together nice long methodical drives that keeps Cam Ward and company on the sidelines (i.e., limit their possessions), I think they'll have a chance. The game is at Syracuse.

2 - For the sake of argument, let's say Miami wins (so no ACCCG appearance for the Tigers), but Clemson beats UofSC, at 10-2 is that enough land Clemson an at-large spot in the CFP?

What say ye?

I think a win over UCS gets us in at somewhere in the 9-11 seed range

depending on other games

We'll know tomorrow if that's true, depending on how the committee seeds us this week. If they line up with AP/Coaches... I think we get in at 9-11 with a win over little brother.

I say no but because we will need to get to #11 to make it. I just don't see them letting in 3 acc teams.

This depends. If Boise is 12th even 11 won’t be good enough to get in for us.

And they don’t have to let 3 acc teams in for Clemson to get in. If smu loses in Charlotte they are out.

I’d probably rather take scenario 2, the chaos in the SEC last week probably means that we would be in with a win, I think either Bama or Ole Miss is out ( but not both don’t trust ESeCSPN)

Miami could very well lose but that would set up a tough game with SMU which is not a guaranteed win. There might be more peril in playing an ACCCG because the committee might leave us out if we lose.

beat UCS and do not make the ACCCG, and we are likely in (IMO)

beat UCS and Syracuse beats Miami -- and then we lose to SMU -- we are definitely out

Tomorrow night's CFP poll should be pretty telling.

Absolute worst case scenario is...
-lose to SC
-Miami loses to Syracuse and gives us a shot at a top 4 playoff ranking
-Lose to SMU
-Get invited to the Kmart bowl
-Lose to Tulane

In my opinion a 10-2 Clemson team is in.

An 11-2 Clemson team is in as ACC champion … no opinion needed.

A 10-3 Clemson team is out … and should be out … my opinion.

Acc will be a 1 bid league no matter what. Bama and ole miss will still be ahead of us. We would not be 10-2 in that league. They also have the Georgia win. We do not. Have to win the league to get in which is possible.

I think the loser of Miami - SMU should

get in ahead of 10-2 Clemson. I'm sorry to say it, but teams losing in the conference championship games should not be punished for getting there.

Along those same lines, if both Miami and SMU are ranked ahead of all of the 3-loss SEC teams in the CFP rankings tomorrow night, the loser of the ACCCG should STAY ahead of those teams.

I don't know if that will happen but it should.

Agreed

Seeing as how eityher loser would only have 2 losses, both winner and loser should be above another 2 loss team form the same conference (Which should be a hard and fast rule barring some really crazy OOC victories).

I think SMU & Miami are different.

If SMU goes undefeated in conference play and loses the ACCG…then they should remain in.

Miami, however, is tied with us in conference play (in this scenario)…if they lose, they are no different from us at that point. They literally are going to the ACCCG based on a tiebreaker.
Our resume with a win over SCAR would be better than theirs in that scenario.
Why should we get punished for being on the wrong side of a ‘non head to head’ tiebreaker?

that not playing in a conference championship will not prevent a team from being selected in the CFP.

I might agree if we all played the same conference schedule

But our schedules are different and our conference record is the same as Miami. So perhaps in Miami won the champ game in a close one I might agree SMU should be in over Clemson. However if SMU beats Miami, I think we have a valid reason to be picked over a conference loser Miami.

Clemson has to win the ACC to get in.
It would have to be comple chaos for them to go 10-2 and get in.

Seems to me that if we win Saturday but miss the ACCCG, we'll make the playoff.

What if we win Saturday, make the ACCCG, but lose to SMU? It might be better for us to miss out on Charlotte after a win over the #####. But I'd rather just win both (SCU and ACCCG).

P.S.

Let’s be honest here. Clemson’s path to the playoff is through the following:
1) Win the ACCCG if the Tigers end up backing into the game
2) Get an at-large bid by beating the Gamehens AND benefiting from some amount of chaos this weekend (ie IU loss, Bama loss, or ND loss)

Right now if no chaos, then Bama gets that 12th spot because the Big10 is getting 4 spots, so the committee will have to give the SEC 4 spots (they will invent the rationale on the fly). That leaves ND, and 1 spot each for the Big12, ACC, and G5 champs. Don’t overthink this thing. This playoff is an ESPN invitational for the P2 and ratings they desire from the bluebloods.

Sadly no. A 10-2 Clemson team that didn't play in the ACC championship game does not make it into the top 12...
