To see what college football coaches are paid in modern times. Can you really grasp that assistant, position coaches are making over $900,000 per year? Our country is going down the tubes, and we are paying football coaches obscene amounts of money for the simple game of football.... We deserve what is coming due to what we choose to prioritize in life.

It's entertainment.
People in entertainment that are successful make a lot of money.
I do feel a little sorry for the pre-NIL players and the pre-crazy money coaches just like I feel sorry for the MLB and NFL players who played before salaries exploded.
I've met several older people working blue collar jobs in SC that were 10+ year MLB veterans back when it was a decent paycheck but not life altering money.

This is a classic stupid argument that is like comparing the price of BMW's to the price of coffee makers. Coaches in college football get paid the $$$ they do because they vastly increase the revenues of the program. They bring positive notoriety to the school and thereby increase the student base who all pay $30K or more per year in tuition. If a successful coach attracts 1000 non-athletic students to attend a college that could mean $30 million a year in additional revenues. This is all aside from the huge increases in sports revenues that successful coaches bring to a University.
Let's put it more simply. People who get paid minimum wage often get paid that low wage because they don't profit more money for the business than they cost. When you become more skilled you get a job that pays perhaps $45 hr. You get paid that because your employer's profits go up by more than $45 per hour because you are there.
Trying to compare coaches to some unrelated job like firemen or whatever who are not paid by the same people is a 100% false comparison of value.
Maybe you should ask why you drive the vehicle that you do. With all the poor people struggling how can you justify the amount of money you spend driving the vehicle? How can you justify wasting money on football games when children are starving in our own country? Put on the shoes and wear them before you go judging everyone else.

a moral component or somehow aligns the service to some societal good. By that criteria, its hard to justify paying the guy who coaches one team's Cornerbacks nearly a million dollars a year.
The market will bear it. That's about the best way to put it, in my opinion.

b/c we see the number and compare it our lives...but what would really astound you is how much that team/owner is bringing in to even consider paying that player that amount. ITs all relative. Sounds like a crazy amount but we fund it and we fund way over what they're paying these guys.

These coaches probably work 330 days a year. Travel non stop. Don't take days off from Aug 1-Jan 1. They spend Christmas and Thanksgiving with the team. Spend the off seasons having dinners with random 16 year old kid's families on recruiting trips.
Meanwhile terrible "country" artists and rappers make millions to spew nonsense into a mic with auto tune. Kenneth Copeland (televangelist) has a private jet. Our politicians make gazillions insider trading.
All about perspective, but I can find lots of people less deserving of $900,000.
It's simple economics. If everyone stops watching, their pay will go down.

Well, sir, that is called free market capitalism.
You are sitting here posting on a football forum talking about what to prioritize in life...fairly hypocritical.
It is people like you (and me) on this forum that create the world that have coaches getting paid that much money.

it's all fake money and when the clock strikes zero. only the value jobs remain standing.
we saw just how close sports was taken to it's knees during Covid. it just takes one war and it's all over.
