Just look and listen when the whistle is blown... a full 3 seconds after the ball was snapped. I'm sorry, but that is to the point where the play has passed, and you CANNOT stop the play for a review.

I agree, however, control what you can control, why the #### do you even run a play like that when you are the better team and are moving the ball at will?

Mafah a chance to get some positive yards considering Cade tripped and was falling down for a clear loss?

CK2 did well to execute an OK pitch to Mafah on that reverse call.
Mafah was the one who screwed it up. Since he was falling and totally out of control, an experienced player such as he should have known to bite the bullet and take the list yardage on the play.
Too bad that our coaches banished .Jay Haynes to the bench for the rest of the scrimmage snaps after Haynes had that motion / formation penalty called on him. Mafah was clearly not up to utilizing his physical running style, and consequently was of marginal use to us against S.Carolina.

Maybe the trick play in question was not likely to work, but the fumble was not caused by the play call. The planned ball exchanges were simple maneuvers. CK2 tripped, but maintained enough body control to get the pitch to Mafah. Mafah had the body control to catch the pitch, but not enough to both secure the pitch and subsequently re-pitch the ball to Wesco.
Mafah undoubtedly knew better than to try to make a pitch as he was about to hit the ground, but in the heat of the moment did it anyways.
The belated decision by the refs to stop a subsequent play in order to retroactively review the reverse-play fumble … so absurdly belatedly … is just bad officiating.

Yes they did. The ball was snapped, Cade took a step back, then threw the ball. A half instant before the ball was caught the Referee blew the play dead.
There is nothing that allows them to do that. Nothing. They made up a rule that doesn’t exist and then changed the game with it.

Here is the exact point when the first whistle was blown, signaling the play dead. This would mean that the play was dead before any South Carolina player had touched the ball.
The refs botched this twice over.

That's not the rule. If there is an immediate Recovery after the whistle is blown and they can still review the play and award the ball to the other team.

Go watch the slow-mo replay in the video above
Dec 1, 2024, 2:54 PM
[ in reply to I still dont understand that call ] |

The ball is moving in Mafah's hands the entire way down. It's never fully secure so he never technically had possession. If it had been a forward pass it would've been an incomplete pass for the same reason. You see that same ruling all of the time on incomplete passes where the ball is moving in the WRs hands and is never fully secured.

does not matter because they ruled him down and blew the play dead... when the whistle blows players stop. Whoever had last possession when the whistle blows maintains possession.
Live Ball Becomes Dead ARTICLE 2. a. A live ball becomes a dead ball as provided in the rules or when an official sounds his whistle (even though inadvertently) or otherwise signals the ball dead (A.R. 4-2-1-II and A.R. 4-2-4-I). b. If an official sounds his whistle inadvertently or otherwise signals the ball dead during a down (Rules 4-1-3-k, m and n) (A. R. 4-1-2-I-V): 1. When the ball is in player possession, the team in possession may elect to put the ball in play where declared dead or repeat the down. 2. When the ball is loose from a fumble, backward pass or illegal pass, the team in possession may elect to put the ball in play where possession was lost or repeat the down (Exception: Rule 12-3-3-d). 3. During a legal forward pass or a free or scrimmage kick, then the ball is returned to the previous spot and the down repeated (Exception: Rule 12-3-3-d). 4. After Team B gains possession on the try or during an extra period, then the try is over or the extra-period possession series is ended. c. If a foul or violation occurs during any of the above downs, the penalty or violation privilege shall be administered as in any other play situation if not in conflict with other rules (A.R. 4-1-2-I and II).

If a play is blown dead it can still be reviewed, ruled a fumble

and awarded to the other team as long as there is a clear recovery. The only significant thing that changes when a play is blown dead is that the defense cannot advance the ball after a recovery. So if SC had picked that fumble up and ran it back for a TD after the play was blown dead, they would've still been awarded the ball, but at the spot it was recovered.

I think Clemson controlled the game and gave it away. That was not the only play that changed the game. We lost it. We were more talented overall. It hurts. We need to get better playmakers still and stop being so conservative (or callings stupid trick plays).

I agree with what you said there. My point was referring that we went 3 and out over and over throughout the 3rd and 4th quarter. We even lost a yard on 4th and 1 inside Carolina's 35 yard line.

Can you cite this rule? Because this is the actual rule:
The Instant Replay Official will review every potentially-reviewable play to either confirm the call on the field was correct or to look for evidence that the play may need to be reviewed. When this type of review occurs, there is no interruption to the game between plays. Note: As soon as the next play begins, it is too late to stop the game for a replay.

"The replay official and his crew shall review every play of a game. He may stop a game at any time before the ball is next legally put in play (Exception: Rule 12-3-6-d) whenever he believes that: 1. There is reasonable evidence to believe an error was made in the initial on-field ruling. 2. The play is reviewable. 3. The outcome of a review would have a direct, competitive impact on the game."
Operative words, "before the ball is put in play"...

You have every right when fans in the upper deck can see missed calls. That was an inception that should have been reviewed. It just supports my opinion that officiating sucks and is getting worse. IMO betting on college sports should be illegal.
For a few calls against Clemson I wish DF had been the HC. He would have confronted them after the game. I have little league officials do a better job.
We should flood the ACC and NCAA offices with calls , text , emails anything to blow up their computer system.

There is one exception (12-3-6-d) also circled in RED.

My last comment on this subject.
Everyone should note, there has been NO EXPLANATION OFFERED BY ANYONE IN AUTHORITY.
I suggest that the reason for the stone cold silence is simple. It has not been explained, because they can’t explain it. What they did, does not exist with in the rules. The official position is indefensible, so they’ve made no defense of it.
The official position : “It looks like a duck, it walks like a duck, it quacks like a duck. So it’s a kangaroo”.
