The other thread got me to thinking about this. Man, little ol Clemson used to rock. Yes, I remember the Marshall Tucker concert, and some others:
1971 Allman Brothers & Wishbone Ash
1972? Rare Earth
1973 J. Geils Band
1973 Jethro Tull
1974? Santana
1974 Humble Pie & Spooky Tooth
Also saw the Doobie Bros a couple times at Littlejohn in the 70s, and it seems like Wet Willie opened for them every time. I'm sure there are probably some others I can't remember right off hand.

good point. went to both. I think the Allmans were there twice once right before Duane died and once right before Oakley died.

Saw the Edgar Winter Group in Spartanburg in '73, when Frankenstein was a big hit. My buddies & I have wondered if Ronnie Montrose was still with them or if it was Rick Derringer by then.

That would have been a great concert. I still regret not seeing Humble Pie. RIP Steve. 
Frank recording was Ronnie Montrose. Derringer was on the Shock Treatment album released in 1974.
So your guess is better than mine as to who was in Spartanburg.
Derringer was more of a rock n'roll style, while
Ronnie Montrose was more fuzz box progressive rock than Rick. Every pic of early Ronnie he has a Les Paul. Not so with Rick.
Their appearances are also very similar.

I go a little further back; saw Jerry Butler in the old dining hall, the Beach Boys in Fike, and the Four Tops, the Association, and Three Dog Night in Littlejohn. There was our own version of Woodstock with Steppenwolf, Steam, among others...good times

David Lee Roth with Guns N Roses opening right before they broke out big! That and a Kenny Rogers/Gatlin Bros. were the two I remember...THen a Widespread Panic show during college that I only sort of remember...Of course that was all late 80's/early 90's

My first concert at 9, The Buckinghams in Fike, Chuck Berry, REO Speedwagon and Hall and Oates opening for The Dobbie Bros., Alice Cooper,several country shows including Ronnie Millsap and Alabama, all in Little John. Pink Floyd and The Stones in the Valley and 2 shows in the baseball stadium, The Beach Boys and Chicago.

Clemtiger81 you are absolutely correct, Loggins and Messina, not Hall and Oates. Can still hear the intro for Doobie Brothers, intro instrumental to Listen To The Music and the announcer saying "Ladies and gentlemaen, Clemson University and the CDA proudly present..... THE DOOBIE BROTHERS!

1980s? I saw Hall & Oates in LJ in 1985 (yea, I'm embarrassed, it was supposed to have been a date but my girlfriend at the time came down with mono. I ended up taking my redneck best friend and we drank ourselves silly in the parking lot beforehand). That was when H&O's lead guitarist was also the lead guitarist for the SNL band. Plus I saw REM and 10,000 Maniacs in 1987 at LJ. Plus, I saw the Stones in DV in 1989 on their supposed farewell tour.
The old Memorial Auditorium in G'ville had some really good rock shows. I saw Ozzy there twice, plus Iron Maiden with Twisted Sister opening.
That's also where the roadie was killed during intermission of the Kiss and Krokus concert. The roadie fell through the ceiling rafters.

Yep, I remember that one too. I'm thinking 1978 or 79? At some point in the show he removed his black shirt to reveal a Clemson T-shirt, I think with a big orange Tiger paw, not positive. But it brought down the house, obviously.

One thing I remember about that show was that J Geils Band saved my life. Or sanity. The opening act was Focus, and they had this one big hit called Hocus Pocus. And they played a frenzied, uber-hyper, 30 min version of it with that singer yodeling over & over & over. I was under the influence of some very strong... nevermind. Anyway, it was driving me batchit crazy, and it got to the point that I was lying on the floor covering my ears. LOL I thought that song would never end, seemed to go on forever. But finally J Geils came out and put down some of their good old down home blues & funk-rock. And I was fine after that and had a great time.

You should have been there the 'good ole days'. We had Lester Lanin and his band and Julie London. Now that's real rock and roll! We also had Ray Charles (great) and the Olympics and a LOT of beach music bands. Does the Central Dance Association still exists? Probably not.

Temptations, Jerry Butler. Arthur Conley, Drifters. Moses Dlllard and the Dynamic Showmen, Joe Pope and the Mighty, Mighty TAMS and many, many others....we liked soul and beach in the 60's......still do!

were a big part of home football weekends in those days, and the dances were packed. One of the first "concert-type" events I recall was a performance in Fike by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons...well-attended but not as popular as the dances. Although I attended their concert and enjoyed it, I recall telling friends that I was generally P.O. that it replaced our usual dance. lol

Wow..wish I could have been there for that one. Wishbone Ash at the height of their powers and the ABB and Skydog in full throttle, just before his death. They played Furman's homecoming earlier in the year. A guy I worked with told me about going to it, or the little he could remember about it, lol....would love to find this cd that apparently the Littlejohn show is on.

Buffett in that 77 show? If this is the one I am remembering when they played Green Grass and High Tides they turned their guitars and amps up all the way up -- and played that song for about 10 mins or more. The roadies kept coming on stage trying to turn the amps back down and the band would just crank em up again. Could not hear the first 3 or 4 Buffet tunes due to my ears still ringing. It was great !!
