mostly for football reasons, but an important point to remember is that the Big 10 sponsors all of our current Clemson sports.
As David mentioned, the SEC does not.
I think this will be a very important consideration for Clemson moving forward, especially since the potential financial benefits from both conferences are likely to be comparable.

Can you imagine how we would’ve done against the SEC recently in football?

No one knows for sure but we came up 2nd on a lot of prospects who wanted the SEC exposure. Had we been in the SEC, we may have signed several of those and that would have made us even more competitive and others who would not have signed them less competitive.
It is fun to speculate but there is no absolute right or wrong answer here.

SEC is simply a much better fit. Geography matters. Culture matters.
There are solutions for those 3 sports which can be found, either from the SEC having enough to sponsor them or becoming an affiliate member of something like conference USA like the coots do for soccer. There are ways.
But playing Georgia every year and Auburn every other year is much more palatable than thinking about playing Rutgers, Minnesota and Maryland (yuck!).

Even worse might be playing AT Rutgers, AT Minnesota, AT Maryland (again)......

Why do people always pick the great SEC programs and the worst B1G programs when comparing potential matchups? You do realize the SEC has Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Missouri, MSU, USCjr, MSU and Ole Miss, all of which have absolutely nothing to brag about, right? And that the BIG has OSU, Michigan, PSU, MSU, Nebraska and Iowa, right?

Yea but USCjr is an easier drive than Ann Arbor. And I assume with expansion we would be in divisions or pods where we are playing teams somewhat close to us.
B1G is just not appealing. We have shared histories with the coots, Georgia and Auburn. And Bama also from the past, recent past and with coaches named Howard, Ford and Swinney. And even playing Miss State makes more sense than Wisconsin. Mizzou would suck, I’ll grant you that but that’s bc they’re the most B1G like of the SEC schools.

All of those teams you mentioned, "Kentucky, Missouri, Ole Miss, MSU, even Arkansas... they are still really good teams to play. If any of those teams were put in the big 10 or ACC they would probably go close to undefeated. They are good teams for sure.

They are also the best conference in
Men’s baseball Softball Track and field
And one of the best in
Gymnastics Golf
And several other sports.
The only thing they’re not great at is lacrosse and soccer.
The SEC is where we belong. It’s the only place that makes sense. We should’ve joined decades ago

Except soccer. You’re beyond ridiculous and not even remotely rational or logical. It’s not about a few teams in football. It’s about the big picture. This isn’t even a debate if you’re remotely logical.

I am not enamored with the SEC because until Georgia LSU and Alabama prove otherwise, we would be 2nd tier at best and depending on how Texas does, we might be 3rd tier.

We are 1-1 vs LSU, 2-2 vs Alabama, and 1-2 vs Georgia. Texas is an afterthought in the last 10 years. That's hardly 2nd tier. Bring 'em on.

You realize when we play sec teams besides SC it's usually one of their best teams if not the best. Clemson would be on top with UGA and Bama in the SEC.

Some of them can be parked somewhere else. SC and Kentucky's soccer play in the Sunbelt for example.

That is fair. I am for whoever gives Clemson the best deal, but honestly I don't see the Big 10 gunning for us when there are other programs like Notre Dame that already have ties with them. Also I don't see FSU and Clemson being split up. I think those two are a package deal. If the Big 10 did want an ACC school I see them taking ND and UNC. I know many will disagree and that is fine. I just don't see the Big 10 in our future. I could be wrong though.

I feel that the Big 10 is a better fit for Clemson (and other ACC schools) - there's a reason the ACC denied West Virginia from the ACC. From an education standpoint, ACC and BIG 10 is a far better fit than SEC - sure there are some good schools (Vandy, Florida) but would hate to step down (from an academic standpoint) when you have the BIG10. Sports wise, very competitive at BIG10 - only argument would be geographically, but then again, we currently travel to Upstate NY (basically Canada), Boston, Miami.

Somehow the very respected academic institution of UT-Austin has made peace with this. I’m sure Clemson can as well.

There are solutions for the few non-revenue sports not sponsored by the SEC. Baseball and basketball would represent an improvement actually, and Soccer would thrive with any affiliation. Trucking all those non-revenue sports all over B1G country just for scheduling purposes would be a dumb move.

Well so far I’m not sure geography has anything to do with it. The SEC and the B1G need name changes to reflect their new identities.
It’s all about the money and the B1G has more to gain adding Clemson than the SEC would. Who knows what will happen… crazy times in college sports.

Our football atmosphere and fanbase lines up with the SEC. Most of the schools we’d play regularly are near by. The closest B1G school is who? Plus once these super conferences are made you can forget our OOC games. It’ll end up being a season on in conference games. Our game with SC will eventually go away. Other sports don’t matter. This is about football. Period.
